Nicalis is on a bit of roll at the moment, with several games headed to the Switch in retail packaging; one of these is Tiny Barbarian DX, which is now scheduled for release in the fourth quarter of 2017 with an MSRP of $29.99. A European release could happen further down the line via Headup Games, as that's a partnership that continues to grow.
This upcoming sword-and-sorcery platform game will feature a charming cover illustration by world-renowned artist and character designer Susumu Matsushita. You may have come across the work of Mr. Matsushita on the cover art for long-running Japanese magazine Famitsu; he also created Famitsu's mascot Necky the Fox, who you might remember popped up as a Super Mario Maker costume.
Here's a sneak peak of the artwork, albeit in slightly lower resolution than we might have liked:

Retail copies of Tiny Barbarian DX will also contain a full-colour instruction manual that includes a featurette on the making of the box art. It describes Mr. Matsushita’s creative process, details his preferred art supplies, shows photos of him working at his drawing table and even identifies the 1960s rock instrumental that he listened to while he created the cover.
It's all shaping up to be quite a compelling package, and hopefully the game will live up to its packaging.

Case looks great, just looked at game play, and looks pretty decent
Very nice, but the game will be 30$ on the eShop as well. Cave Story is out today and it costs 30€ for this very reason, which is ridiculous to say the least.
I think some of these indie publishers are going too far with the amount of physical releases they're bringing to Switch . They're just taking advantage of the lack of bigger retail releases and a large part of the fanbase who will always choose physical over digital even if they have to pay more. They can just add some nice artwork,a manual and charge more for the exact same game. Yes more variety on store shelves is obviously a good thing for Switch but having it dominated by small indie titles like this isn't a good image in the long run. That Chicken Run game being a perfect example of a title that has no place on store shelves .
More uncompetitive Switch pricing.
@OorWullie If the big developers aren't filling the shelves with games, who is it up to?
Wow! That is truly excellent box art. Reminds me of the great box art we used get on MegaDrive and SNES boxes.
It looks kind of like Ghost n Goblins and Wonderboy artwork all mixed together.
Yeah I'd go as far as to say this is probably one of if not the best box art I've seen this year.
cool
@Bunkerneath They just need to be careful or before we know it 3/4 of the games on store shelves will be overpriced indie games and we've got a Wii-like situation, where the good games were buried in amongst shovelware. That's bad for everyone including these indie developers.
I like it. I totally appreciate great box art.
Looks interesting. I'm currently checking the reviews.
Really good, old-fashioned artwork that hits the spot.
Nice! Reminds me a lot of Super Adventure Island.
Does every version of the release get the artbook/pamphlet? I got stuck with an inferior Isaac and it kills me.
This is also the artist who did the box art for the Japanese releases of the earlier Adventure Island games.
@SuperCharlie78 I agree. Nicalis games are great and I love that they are giving us physical but if that means $30 per game I would prefer them to just go digital only. I think all Nicalis games should be $20. Isaac is $40 if I remember correctly which is insane imo.
I have all their games on my wishlist waiting for a price cut to dip in.
@Jessica286 if you have an Amazon Prime Account 30 dollar games are 24 dollars new. I hear the best buy club incentive is even better. I haven't joined the best buy discounts which I think is 30 per year. Amazon Prime is 9.95 a month and you get a Netflix type of experience along with new game discounts. It's been well worth it to me. I love the movies too
$30 seems absurd
@Windy yep I have Prime but thanks for letting me know. Thing is I'm not willing to pay more than $20. When u have games like Implosion or Shantae cheaper than Tiny Barbarian and Cave Story u know the prices are insane.
I will be buying anything physical they put out. Great games and awesome packaging. Nice to have some effort put into the physical products.
@OorWullie,
I totally agree!
@JJ286 I totally agree with you the Eshop prices are way over Priced but if it's a Physical release Best Buy and Amazon Prime can help the budget a little.
I'm worried about this Atari system which I'm actually excited for. But what if this AtariBox has a similar chipset or even more powerful than the Switch? I think it would for sure shake up the gaming world
