Shantae is a series that owes a lot of its success to the Nintendo audience; it’s always felt like something of a second party game to a certain degree. And with the latest success of Shantae: Half-Genie Hero on the Wii U and Switch, that series has no doubt been gradually accruing a much larger fanbase. As something of a gift to fans of the games dating back to the first Shantae on Game Boy Color, WayForward has announced that they’ll be releasing an art book.
Though not a whole lot is known about it at this time, The Art of Shantae was recently revealed at Comic-Con. The book will contain art spanning all four games in the series and will be releasing sometime in 2018. Perhaps if this does well, maybe we’ll see more art books from WayForward covering other series, like the Mighty games.
What do you think? Would you pick this up? How did you like Half- Genie Hero? Drop us a comment in the section below.

I always liked when the developer's let people see some of the work involved in a game.
This is cool! I like the art from Pirate's Curse the most.
Feels like 2nd party lol Half hero genie is out on ps4, vita, xbox and Mac/pc. Must be a joke article
@EDF He was clearly talking about the series as a whole. Must be a joke comment.
Definitely yes. The art for thus series is very charming.
I love art books! They give such good insight into the process of how characters, locations, props and such are created, evolve and are refined over time. Some are rather bare bones, though, this sounds like the complete opposite!
I thought we were getting a new game there. I was thinking that's an interesting name, The Art of Shantae.
Would definitely buy it if I can get it in Europa
@FredBiletnikoff
Nah, the fact he used the term 2nd party says it all, regardless of the series as a whole, even the dlc made it to other hardware, making it more unplausable , just like your joke comeback, the shantae games will always be multiplatform in the future, did I step on your toes or something, oh I am sorry NOT, get with it it's far from resembling a 2nd party game. Monster hunter first came out on ps2 but it don't make it a 2nd party game, even though the best selling version was on Sony hardware, psp
@EDF it's most likely that came from the fact it started in the Gameboy Color and was the only one for many years before becoming a download title available on multiple platforms. But yeah it's not really is it lol.
Shantae's art is awesome but I won't pick this up.
Ah mention of the Mighty series. I loved playing Mighty Switch Force HD on the Wii U. I just liked the way it was a puzzle game overall but hidden behind an action/platformer skin. It's so addictive getting the route for the level nailed down and then repeating it until you had the fastest time you could get. Then looking on YouTube and realising you were nowhere near the times on there! I'd like it if they did a physical collection of those games, maybe with a new one too.
Anyone have a clue when the physical version of Half Genie Hero will be released?
I thought the art from Risky's Revenge and Pirate's Curse was the best. The former had long, slender figures, whereas IntiCreates did some brilliant work with the latter. I thought Half-Genie Hero toned it down too much and was too cutesy.
@Filth_Element Excellent diffusion of a tense comment battle there.
The visual appeal of Shantae has always been a major part of the series so an artbook seems to make sense but are people really paying to look pictures these days when dozens of people are creating images for free on the internet for every popular thing?
All of my YES!!!
@palatinus haha cheers. Yeah I agree totally especially as some of those images will make it online.
I want it.
Good to see WayForward branching out and growing. I still consider them low to mid tier devs (due to age of studio and quantity of games not the quality) but I am happy to see younger companies mature and grow.
@Ryu_Niiyama How is a 27 year old industry veteran with a sizable game library young?
@palatinus By what I said in my post. Not sure what you are looking for me to clarify here. Have a nice day.
