Many fans of the blue blur have been highly anticipating the release of Sonic's next 3D outing. In announcement videos Sega has played it coy on the official release date, with only the time-stamp of 2017 currently given. Now video game retailer EB Games may have let the date slip by revealing on its Australian website that Sonic Forces will be releasing for Nintendo Switch on 7th November.
As you can see below the website shows the full release date along with a glimpse of what the Switch box art will look like. The same pages for other platforms also give the same date. Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colours and Sonic Generations were all launched around the November mark, so this date does seem like a strong bet.
Sonic Forces sees Sonic team-up with his classic persona in an attempt to stop Doctor Eggman and the new mysterious villain Infinite. Besides the two Sonic characters Tails, Knuckles and Metal Sonic are all due to appear along with the ability to create your own custom character for the very first time.
Would you pick up Sonic Forces in early November?

Please be good...
Mania still is the only sonic game I'm splurging on day one but I really want this game not to stink.
The only part about the game that's worrying me are the avatar stages. Otherwise s far Sonic Team's been good with the Modern Sonic formula and imo they haven't put out a bad game in last 9-10 years. Anyway, looking forward to it.
What I found surprising is that it's only AU$60 (meaning that it's likely to retail for $40 in the U.S.), the same price as the overpriced Puyo Puyo Tetris and the even more overpriced Ultra Street Fighter II.
I'm strongly considering it. I'll wait for some more impressions closer to release.
Just...Looks...AWFUL
I don't have any hope in this game. But, I expect Sonic Mania to be a blast.
I'll definitely be grabbing this one. Haven't been pumped for a Sonic game since 2013.
Please be good!
@Kalmaro I think you have expressed the feelings of every Sonic fan out there
The same pages for other platforms also give the same date. Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colours and Sonic Generations were all launched around the November mark, so this date does seem like a strong bet.
Then again Sonic Boom, Sonic 2006, Sonic Genesis, Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic R, and Sonic Labyrinth all were also released on that same month as well. Sonic Forces may be a hit or miss, if it's a hit then good Sega could keep going, if it's a miss then no worry we already got Sonic Mania to piggy back on.
@GrailUK I just want a good 3d sonic game! It's like they are cursed or something, almost all of them are bad.
Sonic Mania looks like it will be the better of the two, but Forces still looks like it will be a solid game in it's own right.
@Kalmaro Again, it's like you are inside my head!
Is it still 720p 30fps docked on Switch and 1080p 60fps on everything else?
I really want to support Sonic, but I feel like the character is better suited in another genre like in Mario Kart, or Smash.
I want it to be at least decent for the series' sake, even though I'm not going to buy it until I can get it on sale digitally for like £5 or less in a few years time.
Sonic Mania on the other hand is looking like a Day 1 although hope to hold out until the first few reviews.
@GrailUK It's like, the games start off fine. You're in a nice fun area to run in... Then suddenly everything gets stupid as they try to toss in a gimmick no one cares about.
"Hey, let's give sonic a sword!"
"Hey, let's make him turn into a beast at night and make a bad God of War clone!"
"Hey, let's make more hedgehogs, retcon Blaze (who sonic should already have met) and let's make Shadow even MORE EDGY!"
We just can't catch a break. I just want a sonic game where I can run fast and the scenery looks nice
@Kalmaro Same. People seem to mistake THINKING this will be bad for HOPING it will be bad. I don't WANT it to be bad, but I haven't seen a single encouraging sign yet. I had a Dreamcast and Genesis, and (at the time) loved the Sonic games on them. I have nothing to gain from this game being crap, and I really hope to be proven wrong. Sonic and his fans have been through enough at this point....
@MarioPhD Right, the only sonic games lately that I have enjoyed have pretty much all been on my handhelds. Sonic advance will forever be remembered fondly by me.
@MegaTen Yep.
I'm still kinda surprised that @AlexOlney compared it to 06-- that's as disingenuous and low as you can get (06 had terrible design choices and glitches that wrecked the gameplay-- I'd imagine they'd want to release a polished product and the gameplay itself has looked solid, if a bit safe).
@Kalmaro Sonic and the Black Knight, though obviously breaking from the series traditions, is actually pretty fun. Not a ton of replay value, but it's a blast to play-- definitely nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be.
And Mario is in October right....yeah, no one is going to play Sonic over Mario.
Sonic really struggles to be decent in the realms of 3D space, something Nintendo nailed with Mario straight away on the N64. And again Mario Odyssey just looks so much better it's crazy. So no, I don't think I'll be buying this game, unless it somehow receives glowing reviews in which case I'll get it on sale.
@CrazedCavalier Well, someone had to like it. This is all my opinion anyway.
Day one for sure! Can't wait!
@Zingo I did when Colors came out over Mario Galaxy 2, I didn't like 2 that much but I was Addicted to Colors, I'm sure it'll be the opposite with Odyessy, but I'll probably play Forces in between breaks
@Kalmaro It's actually not that uncommon of an opinion from what I've seen. There's plenty of people out there who recognize its issues (short length, linearity) but have a blast with the core gameplay. It's definitely nowhere near a 3/10-- I'd honestly say about a 6.5. As I said, not amazing but more than fun enough for what you can get it for now.
@CrazedCavalier Sounds like it's decent, but not worth the original price.
@Zingo Not everyone likes Mario, you know?
Definitely a wait-and-see candidate. But after seeing the game essentially written off in an early preview by NL, my hopes aren't very high.
It's 3D Sonic so unfortunately the chances are it'll be bad. But let's see what the reviews say first before condemning it.
Day one for me.
I'm not the biggest Sonic fan in the World, but there are many Sonic Games i enjoy, so i'm looking forward to this.
Please don't tell me you have to play the avatar stages...I'd really rather not
I was going to pick this up until the review NL gave it...it'll take some strong other opinions to get me to reconsider.
@MegaTen Sure you can - just give them Sonic Mania
Anyways, this really isn't for me as I'm an old-school Sega fan and have only enjoyed a couple of the modern games, but I know there are plenty of people that love this style of Sonic, so good for them. Just glad we've got Mania on the way as well.
I'm really scared about how this game will sell if that release date is true. Mario is huge and will no doubt sell several million. And that comes out just a little over a week before Sonic Forces. Hopefully Forces won't be DOA because of Mario Odyssey.
Regardless, I'm excited but cautious for Mania and Forces. Hope they both turn out spectacular.
Awesome! In my opinion this'll be the best Sonic game in years! I'm more excited about Forces than I am Mania!
Well the fact they missed last year to release it rushed (as SEGA normally do) for Sonic's 25th, this should be at least alright and not buggy.
About a week or 2 after Mario.
Well good luck with that.
I'm more excited for this than Sonic Mania and Nintendo latest games.Too bad I won't be able to play it at launch.
This will rock.
I know it, you know it, admit it.
Worried about this being a flop. I really want 3d sonic games to be great. If this ends up being crap sega just stick to your roots and keep bringing us more 2d games like sonic mania.
I'll wait and see on this game. I'll probably pick it up around Christmas, after I (most likely) complete Super Mario Odyssey.
I'm not going to bash this game, but I'm not going to assume it's fantastic either.
Really doubtful this one is going to turn out well :/. Wish I felt differently
@Nolan420 sonic adventure was interesting, that's the only game I can remember that was around that time I think.
@Nolan420 I'm pretty sure it was!
@Nolan420 I was 10 so... Yeah. That's elementary age right?
Hah, I was right! That would explain why I barely remember it.
I'll pick up Mania for sure, but barring a surprise gushing review, I will probably be skipping this one. Too bad they couldn't get it out a little bit sooner. Launching this game eleven days after Mario Odyssey is a foolish move. People will be comparing them, whether they are similar or not. And, like always, Mario will outshine Sonic in a dramatic way.
Wow, that's like a week after Mario...
@sillygostly I'm pretty certain I paid $30 for Puyo Puyo Tetris. The game has a substantial amount of content, though, and was well worth the purchase. Street Fighter may be a different story.
Sega is at least putting in more development time with Forces instead of rushing to meet a deadline like Sonic '06 or Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. I remember hearing that it's been in development since 2015 so that should be plenty of time to iron out bugs and make a decent Sonic game hopefully. I am totally pumped for Sonic Mania in a couple weeks and I'm cautiously optimistic for Forces even though I really enjoyed Colors and Generations.
@Kalmaro
Pretty much my feelings as well. I loved Generations and this looks like it could be similar to that, but the fact that characters talk to you during gameplay and (some of) the avatar's gameplay are making me raise an eyebrow.
There's also no lives system anymore, and you can't get your rings back when you get hit, which just feels weird to me...
