Evo 2017 isn't far away, taking place from 14th to 16th July; the ever-present Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will be major parts of the event too, with both tournaments typically drawing huge crowds at the event and online.
Pokkén Tournament DX won't be officially featuring this time; the Wii U original had an official tournament at EVO 2016 but missed out in a fan vote for this year's event. Nevertheless Nintendo will be promoting the upcoming Switch version at a booth space in the event, 'recruiting' players (pro gamers and spectators) to a Pokkén Tournament DX Academy. It's not quite as glamorous as it sounds, but overall it's certainly a good idea to promote the game at one of the year's most iconic competitive fighting game events.
You can see some press release blurb below.
This year, Nintendo is attending the event with a booth space featuring playable kiosks for the Pokkén Tournament DX fighting game, which stars popular Pokémon characters and launches for the Nintendo Switch console on Sept. 22. During EVO, Nintendo will be playfully “recruiting” people to join the virtual Pokkén Tournament DX Academy, which provides a direct line of communication between Nintendo and the Pokkén Tournament DX players.
By signing up for the Academy, members will receive exclusive tips and tricks directly from Nintendo and the game’s development team, as well as invitations to a special Nintendo event at PAX West in Seattle.
Evo is at Mandalay Bay – South Convention Center – in Las Vegas this year, with the Nintendo Booth being No. 121. This Pokkén promotion will run from 10am to 8pm local time on 14th and 15th July.
We're planning to watch and live blog the key matches from EVO in the Smash Bros. tournaments, so we'll see some of you then. Meanwhile, are any of you heading to EVO and tempted to try out Pokkén Tournament DX?

Not going to buy Pokken again, just want to try the new characters when my friend buys this. Smash4 on the other hand... I would buy a Switch version: carrying a Switch set-up to tournaments takes less space than with Wii U.
I considered going to EVO this year, but since I suck at Smash, I chose not too. This is making me regret that choice. Though I'll still get it when it comes out on the switch.
I think there would have been more people signing up on their own if Nintendo had brought the Pokken DLC to WiiU awhile back. However, I do understand the strategic financial decision of not doing that.
Is so nice when cool things not happen close to you.
Hopefully it will be at EVO next year. I plan on going since I'm next door to Vegas now.
Q) Meanwhile, are any of you heading to EVO and tempted to try out Pokkén Tournament DX?
A) I live in the UK, so that isn't exactly an easy option. I was planning on watching some EVO matches... but it seems my on and off job has cruel timing... for the 2nd year in a row. Hopefully I'll be able to see bits of the BlazBlue and King of Fighters tournaments, and I'll at least get to enjoy Maximillian's top 5 EVO moments.
On a slightly related note, I do plan on getting Pokkén Tournament DX. A big factor of appeal for me when it comes to the Nintendo Switch is that I can utilise it's portability to play my fighting games more frequently, thus keeping my skills sharp and getting better at them. I really enjoyed Pokkén Tournament, and I'm hoping the Nintendo Switch release will allow me to become a fantastic fighter with Chandelure.
