WayForward announced today via Twitter that its newest Shantae platformer, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, will be receiving a Switch port this Summer. WayForward will be handling the digital release, while XSEED takes care of physical distribution. Details are scarce, but so far they've confirmed that the Switch version will support HD Rumble with at least 150 patterns:
We loved the Wii U version, awarding it a nine out of ten and calling it "top of its class". It only makes sense for Shantae to appear on the Switch given the franchise's roots on Nintendo's portable consoles; the first title appeared on the Game Boy Color back in 2002.
What do you think? Are you interested to try Half-Genie Hero on your Switch? Will you repurchase this if you already have the Wii U version? Let us know in the comments.

anyone remember that one developer who was all upset that he wasn't getting in on Switch like other devs and claimed he went out for drinks with Nintendo? Doesn't look like it was Wayforward
Not tried this yet. What an ideal opportunity!
I have it on PS Vita and love it , I just might double dip 😉
Wow I love this. Any Shantae game is fantastic.
Can we Euro Chaps get some Physical copies in as well? Region free I know, but still.....
Instant buy for me! Can't wait!
Got a digital wii u code for backing and physical on Vita but will get this physically too.
Awesome, I love the game, but haven't touched it since I got my Switch...so perhaps now I'll just wait and play it on Switch instead, even if I have to redo my current progress. Would be nice if there's some sorta cross-buy or discount for backers who got WiiU copies instead. I'd have gladly waited for Switch...
@Wolfgabe I basically just commented similar to that effect on the Switch topic. Nintendo is being too selective about what appears on the eshop and they may just lose some quality gaming because of it.
@Wolfgabe They say if you say his name three times, his games will appear on the Nintendo Switch.
This "console" should have been called Wii U 2: PORTable Edition.
And as a result of this port, we can kiss goodbye to a sale on the Wii U version any time soon. Sssh! The Wii U never existed, or so Nintendo would have us believe.
Finally! I've been waiting to play this until it came out on the Switch. I knew it was inevitable. Hopefully it comes out relatively early in the summer because I cannot wait!
Oh, and I wouldn't mind replaying The Pirate's Curse on the Switch down the road.
As long as I can get in physically I'll be happy and yes that means a UK/EU version
This is great news. I want the physical release of this on Wii U but living in the U.K. I can't due to annoying region locking. At least I don't have to worry about that with the Switch. Glad I held off getting the digital version. I'll get this when I eventually get a Switch
Played it on XOne - so gonna double dip on this one!
Looks good, hope it plays good too.
Never got any Shantae, don't know if I will
@BezBot You are seriously missing out.
Love the series. Haven't picked up Half Genie Hero yet though. This is fantastic. I will definitely get it day one. Now Dark Souls trilogy and DKCTF ports next please.
@dregs78 It doesn't look to appealing for me. I guess I'll try this when it comes to Switch because it has gotten good reviews and some of my friends like it
@ASTROMAN I'd just be happy with Demon Souls and Dark Souls remasters. With DS2 and DS3 on PS4 it looks good enough.
I've still got the physical Wii U one sealed with soundtrack. I might keep that sealed and get this.
@FragRed Just like Uwe Boll! Crud, I said his name once!
I'm in the "Had this for Wii U but would rather have it portable too" camp.
Can we get tropical freeze ported next. Just want to play it portable. Then the wonderful 101. Who needs new games
Yay!
I never pick it up so is time.
I had been waiting on this one hoping for it on switch! So glad it is happening!
I had my eyes set on the Vita version but... man, Switch is really beginning to compete with my Vita. Two titles in one day!
This definitely makes up for the lack of no 3DS version of the game.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Lol, Nintendo doesn't care about Wii U owners. Back on topic, I will definitely be picking this up for Switch. Loved Shante and the Pirates Curse, looking forward to this one.
If the physical copy is available in the UK I will buy this looks great Fun! Do we know if it will be released physically in UK or just Digital?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Have to agree, it's definitely a port machine. Even the Japanese games are ports of vita games like, fate extella umbral star, puyo puyo tetris, I am setsuna, the newly anounced one piece unlimited world red. I don't mind ports but would prefer sequel's instead. One thing for sure the switch will never have droughts like I had on my wii u thanks to ports
Haven't bought it yet, so this is an easy decision. Physical Switch version for me!
I have heard great things about the series but I REALLy need a physical release. I am so OCD about having physical copies for my collection.
I still haven't bought it on Wii U,guess II'll get the Switch version whenever I buy one(especially if it includes all the upcoming DLC).
@NicolausCamp Nice avatar
I platinumed the game on PS4 a few months ago, and I will gladly buy the Switch version to help support the Shantae series and WayForward.
Shantae amiibo pls
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I welcome it being a port edition of as many prior consoles as possible (and hasn't it ironically been "Neo-Geo 2.0" by that logic as well, anyway? XD). You can tell me why it shouldn't be one among its other roles after the day I can buy a Wii U and carry my Gamepad outside my house.
Ports are an inevitable and abundant part of any console's library. Some consoles just have extra justification. Handhelds like Gameboy had portability. PS4 had lack of backwards compatibility. Switch has flexibility. And Shantae Half Genie Hero is a third-party, multiplatform and quite fresh (December 2016) title - isn't that what you're asking for more on Switch? Just don't tell me that "modern third party support" seriously boils down to "Uncharted-tier budgeted photorealism or scram" in your eyes.
@JTMnM And in Smash,I voted for her in the ballot(among other characters).
@Dev This was a great game on Wii U. I backed it very early on, so I have a digital copy only. But I could see buying it again as a physical cart this time around.
So glad I didn't cave and buy this for PS4 or WII U. Will get this on Switch one day
Woo hoo! DEFINITE purchase for me. Glad I waited!
Now I will be picking this up. I did not for the Wii U but man this is going to look good on that switch screen.
Awesome, 1 of the 2 games I didn't play on the Wii U before I sold it. Very happy to be getting a physical version.
Now hoping for Bayonetta news.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE You have got to start coming up with some way to back up your problems with the Switch sometime.
You have issues with ports from the WiiU, but since the WiiU barely sold anything those are basically new games to Switch users. You can't claim that the Switch is not getting new games because it very obviously is. You can't even say that the Switch is an upgraded WiiU since it has more functions and is more powerful.
You may as well hate on all consoles for being more powerful than their predecessors, yet you seem to only be upset about the Switch. Don't get me wrong, you are entitled to your opinion. Just seems odd that you feel so passionately about something that you can't really support.
HGH was kind of a let down, but that's still good news. Hopefully we'll see the Risky mode soon enough.
Cool, I was waiting for this to make the switch.
Definitely buying this. Skipped it on Wii U because I was kinda mentally done with the system at that point.
Fingers crossed for a collectors pack with all the shantae! GBC > WiiU
Wouldn't pay the same price again for this unless it included all the DLC (which isn't out yet, I realise). It's good news, but I really think there should be some sort of cross-buy on the eShop.
If the vc isn't out to distract me then I'll look forward to picking this up
@SLIGEACH_EIRE lol your such a joke with all your hate. Lol why play Nintendo if all you do is hate on it.lol
@Kalmaro I feel same way.all he does is hate on almost every post
Cool, glad I held out buying it before now.
Hell yes I'll buy this game for the Switch. I bought it for the Wii U but didn't give it too much time because I really wanted to play it as a portable, and now here it is. They should port Pirate's Curse from the 3DS too, that was the best Shantae game by far.
@Slim1999 It's starting to get old, that's for sure.
Have the Wii U special edition sealed but regardless this will be a retail day 1 purchase on Switch! Also all the recent talk about ports vs no ports on Switch? Well this is a fine example of a quality game that is a port coming to Switch! A great game is a great game regardless of origin or how old it is period. This is a great announcement today by Way Forward!
YES! I'm glad I held out on the Wii U version. Looking forward to this now.
I hope this has crossbuy with the wiiu, give me a discount at least!
@Slim1999 @Kalmaro Ironically his comments have simply been ported from previous comment threads.
@nhSnork curious...what's the other game? Did I miss another big game announcement for Switch today?? 😁
I got it on Wii U, but I'm totally gonna get it for the Switch for the portability option.
the last game I bought for the Wii U. Awesome game, wish they gave us a discount on the switch version
Have it for xb1 and beat it 100% i wont be buying it for the switch but if you havent played it you should, great game and its perfect for the switch.
Cool.
This is a good example of a game I would never play in front of a TV, but would be down for on Switch.
I have it on Wii U. Good game, if you haven't picked it up. I like that it will come with more rumble patterns. The game had quite a bit of rumble.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I get the frustration, but did you not enjoy your experience with the Wii U? I don't feel cheated, every system is a gamble, especially in the early days, but I've had more fun on my Wii U than on my Wii or PS3 (this is obviously a personal experience). Sure it died early and didn't have volumes of games, but the games it did have I enjoyed immensely and will remember fondly the Wii U like I do the Gamecube and SNES.
@Lizuka for shame!! It's good that you liked them enough to not finish them I guess. I think this sentiment is a general problem with gaming these days, we have too much to play, because we buy more than we can ever play, and we can never really enjoy what we have because we've moved on to something shinier and newer. I'm not questioning your taste or choice, just that this is a growing sentiment with a lot of gamers, and it's frustrating because we never really sit and enjoy games anymore we only consume them.
Yesssss bin waiting for this news for so long now
Never got the Wii U version. Have it on my wish list. Definitely going to buy the Switch version instead.
@joey302 yes, One Piece Unlimited World Red. Been on Vita for a while but now the deluxe edition (with all DLC and local co-op) is hitting PS4 and Switch.
yay yay yay another Port for the switch.
can we please have something new for are SWITCH.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Man... always ranting and raving like a little bit... You SHOULD realize by now that the Wii U is done and move on with your life. Enjoy what it was and move on.
Imagine treating everything else in life the way you treat your Wii U. Dog dies and you get a new dog..... but still play with the old dog. Girlfriend breaks up with you (or vice versa) and you get a new, better looking girlfriend; still try and go out with the old girl. Find something better to do with your life. You're making yourself out to be a punk, man. Always crying about your Wii U this or Wii U that.
Not that nearly everyone else hasn't already addressed this elsewhere....
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Well, every new console in it's beginning years is a port machine. Look at the PS4 back then with countless ports/cross gen of PS3 games and remasters it gathered.
Loved this on PS4, I rarely double dip on games but this one I would get. I have to buy a Switch first though.
have all the them on my N3DS with expection of this one, so yeah I'll get it on the Switch for sure.
Yeeey!!, Great!! I have the Wii U (and collector edition) version, but when I get the Switch, also, add this awesome game!! ^.^
@nhSnork yes did see that. Imo not nearly as big as shantae's announcement but One piece Is a good game in its own right. Also available as a download only on Wii U eshop. PS3 as well but with retail option. 😊
i hope they give some kind of discount for people with wii u version otherwise i won't be double dipping for reasons.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Your comments, about Switch being a Wii U port machine, never cease to amaze me. You are obviously very jealous of people owning the Switch console. I can understand that and I sympathize with you.
Oh yes^^ really wanted to try that one. Couldnt play it on the wii u. Im starting to like my switch again.
Why don't they release a Shantae collection with all the games?
I think more fans would buy the game if more value was added to the physical release.
The classic nintendo handheld platformer series? On Switch? This summer? PHYSICAL!?!?
I am SOOO in! I skipped this on wiiu as i skipped most eshop games after duck tales, but I'm so in for physical shantae this time a around. This goes on the list as "major release"
I have it on Wii U and probably won't buy it again, but it is a great game. The only complaint that I have is, that Risky's Revenge was a proper Metroidvania and the Shantae games got more and more linear after that.
Nice one. I pretty much stopped buying Wii U games a year ago so this is another one I can add to my Switch shopping list. It looks like the kind of game that suits a portable machine and hopefully will be improved like all the other ports.
Please excuse me while I go celebrate.
Nice.
I was just thinking about what a shame it was all those games that released on Wii U during it's final years would be relegated to obscurity for Nintendo gamers. We've moved on to bigger and better things, and nobody wants to have to fire up Wii U to play games like Shantae... we want it on Switch!
Plus, there's actual merit to Switch ports since every console game becomes console and handheld, and every handheld game becomes handheld and console. And on a system people actually enjoy playing. Wii U never really took advantage of dual screens. Monster Hunter did, and that was amazing (gonna be hard adjusting to single screen) but that was a rare exception of a game being remarkably superior thanks to the gamepad
I want that blue and red costume in game though. Looks slick. HD rumble sounds awesome, so at least there's that
Shantae looks funky in the Neon Switch colours.
I'll most likely import the physical Switch version. I wonder if the DLC will be included?
I can't wait for it to come out! 😄
Always good to hear of more platforms being supported. Good that they were able to do both Wii U and Switch. I'd love it if they did a Linux PC version too. That's where I'm at.
I really want to play the new Shantae game, I have The Pirates Curse on Wii U and had a lot of fun but never finished it (as it got more difficult and I kept getting lost) so maybe I should give Half Genie Hero a go. Its style is cute.
Already have it on Vita, but this is well worth a double dip.
I'll buy physical.
