In case you missed it, 8Bitdo's line of third party controllers are now compatible with the Nintendo Switch thanks to a firmware update, meaning you can take out your opponents as intended on Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers, grab a perfect score on Puyo Puyo Tetris, defeat the Enchantress in Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, and potentially give yourself a fairly substantial disadvantage on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
But if you're stuck on how to get these things going on Nintendo's latest console, or you're apprehensive about picking one up because you wouldn't know where to begin, then the video above should quell the proverbial technical storm in your mind.

The question is: will Nintendo continue to allow 3rd party controllers to work on Switch like they did on Wii?
HELLO THERE LOVELY PEA POLE
@marnelljm lmao
So excited! I ordered a nes30 pro and it's supposed to arrive next week on my birthday. Finally I will be able to play Puyo Puyo Tetris with a proper D-pad, instead of the directional buttons on the Joy-Con or the defective joke of a D-pad on the Switch Pro controller.
@iphys I love the controllers (as I do Joycons and the pro, so take that as you will), but 8bitdo's dpads have serious issues with PCB contacts. In other words, good luck with diagonals...
I updated and sinked my 8bitdo pro controller last night, popped in Zelda and it worked great! Not as comfy as the pro controller, but it should do great on games that need a good D pad.
Cant wait to try SFII on Friday...me & my wife will be using the SNES 8bitdo, for some good nostalgic ass kicking. I'm really stoked these joysticks work with the Switch!!!
I have one of these, I did the firmware update and got it to connect, but only one time.
Since then I've been unsuccessful in getting the device to connect again, how do I troubleshoot? My brother has the exact same problem.
@marnelljm I repeat it every time I hear him lol
These are going to be glorious when the virtual console hits.
Great controllers; terrible company name
I just got mine working today. Took me about 45 minutes to figure out. This video would have saved me a lot of time lol.
So confusing, but more ways to play games how you want is never a bad thing.
@RupeeClock Every time you connect you need to hold Y & Start, not just Start in case that's what you're doing 🙂
@AlexOlney
Yeah, that's what I've been doing.
Although the mistake might've been following the instructions, and after holding Start + Y to switch the thing on in Switch mode, that I then press and hold Select for two seconds to go into pairing mode.
My brother reckons that he was able to resolve his pairing issue by deleting some suspect files on his Switch's microSD card, I dunno.
@RupeeClock I can't say I've ever tried to hold select in any instance and everything seems to be working fine. Try reconnecting it as done in the vid through the controller menu by just pressing Y & Start and leaving it. Sometimes it can seem to take a ludicrously long time but just leave it to donits thing and it should pair up nicely.
Then leave that Select button alone in future connecting 😉
Nice use of DK Country music in the background
@AlexOlney
Thanks for the tip, I'm gonna have to try this again when I get home from work.
Because how should I be playing Puyo Puyo Tetris?
Let's get real, the big mistake is Nintendo should have had a proper d-pad on the left controller. I knew 4 buttons would become a problem and hope they do indeed release a left controller with a d-pad. The points of the d-pad could always be used as buttons when detached anyway.
Sorry guys for asking an strange question TWICES on this Nintendo fan site but... does this controller work with PS4? I see Wii/Wii U, and PS3 supports but they are greyed out though.
Oh man! This works perfectly! Playing Shovel Knight with the d-pad on the Pro controller was already good, but I just played for an hour with the 8Bitdo SNES controller and it is....PERFECT!! I so want to play my VC games on the Switch now. And awesome platformers like Super Meat Boy!
