Climax Studios has revealed that it is bringing its four-player space action title RiftStar Raiders to the Nintendo Switch.
Already confirmed for the PC, Xbox One and PS4, the title is due out this year. Its four-player co-op action should be a good fit for the Switch.
In case you were wondering what all the fuss is about, here's the official description of the game:
The Spiral Arm has been plunged into chaos, and it’s fallen to the poster boy for the Federation’s ‘Most Wanted’ to save the galaxy… and turn a profit. Hordes of Warswarm, a hive-mind of alien AI, have waged war on humanity, launching overwhelming attacks against federation space and now it falls to you and your ragtag team of Raiders to take them out.
Hailing from the orbital city of Arcadia, located at the heart of the Far Reach and home to the galaxy’s pirate guilds and criminal elite, Raiders are infamous hot shot pilots, scavengers and mercenaries. But working for the feds doesn’t mean you’re about to let all that loot slip between your fingers without a fight, even with a much greater threat on the horizon.
Enlist your most reliable teammates to shoot and loot your way through 9 formidable four player co-op missions, wiping out swarms of aliens, feds and rival pirate gangs in this deep space, top down, shoot ‘em up.
Collect perks and loot as you clash with mobs of enemies in intense combat and reap the rewards to craft and upgrade your ship. Customise your spacecraft with tons of combinations to create your perfect loadout, whether you want to be a tank to take the hits, a support to snatch your comrades from the jaws of death, an agile damage dealer and more.
It’s all about the loot
Obliterating hordes of enemies is risky, but there’s nothing like the promise of loot to whet the appetite of a Raider. The more enemies you put down, the more gear you pick up. Craft and equip weapons, shields, boost engines and more to your constantly improving ship to hit harder, move faster and play better.
Raid as a team
Cooperation is key to taking down the vast numbers of alien Warswarm, not to mention the Spiral Arm’s underbelly of rogues, pirates and rival smugglers all looking to strip you down to scrap metal. Work with your team to play through 9 handcrafted story missions, collecting loot and crafting ship systems to match your squad strategy, overpower your enemies and live to raid another day.
Intense, empowering combat
No one said taking down the bad guys would be easy, so take advantage of your ship’s upgraded loadout and get the upper hand on your foes through waves of addictive, fast paced combat. It’s not only the bad guys you have to watch out for though; there’s no honour among thieves as teammates can swoop in and steal your most valuable loot drops at any second, and pilfer your perks and cash for themselves.
Progression every session
Feel your Raider spacecraft evolve and improve with every mission. With the ability to collaborate and strategize with your teammates and experiment with the wide variety of possibilities each ship tech tree offers, no two runs will play out the same.
Not only that, it would appear that the studio has other Switch projects in development:
Will you be checking this one out when it arrives?

Nope
Nah.
Idk already looks like a 7/10 game for me and while normally that would be fine everygame I got on switch so far is 8/10 or better.
Hope it blows expectations but even then the gameplay looks pretty boring to me.
^^^^^^?
Visually at least, this looks right up my street. Let's see...
Oh, I like the looks of this one. Nice that it's a newer game, too.
Advanced Gauntlet in space.
Co-op with progression and custom build outs. Fun fun.
@gcunit Agreed, what is up with the first four posts? lol
Not sure the trailer should start with the close up 3D ships that were obviously built to be viewed from a distance in the game view. That threw me for a second, but then the gameplay looks great and the overall co-op experience has great potential. Hope this one delivers.
This looks decent. I'm always glad to see more indie games on the switch
Looks interesting.
@aaronsullivan It looks alright visually but it's just not for me.
All it needs now is a spinner attachment. Makes me think of an old favorite I used to finish on one quarter (ah, college arcades and time to kill, how I miss you)
Time to pester them on Twitter for a physical release...
How is it possible to make a gameplay trailer that turns people off.........
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Fair enough. My family will dig it, I think. Even going back and playing Gauntlet 4-player, as broken as that game is as a home game, is made much more fun because we can all play it together and shoot each other's food.
Not that this is Gauntlet. The tech tree customizations look like a lot of fun to experiment with on multiple play-throughs and it's a time-tested gameplay style that looks to add quite a bit of variety.
@Nintendoforlife Have you been to the internet before? You could give away $100 totally legit and it would turn someone off and you'd get cursed out for it. lol.
I do think there are some missteps in how it was edited. I would never have started with the close up of the ship in dock (or maybe show a different one). At first I was thinking it was going to be a 1st person 3D space faring game and those games are all about beauty and detail in space ships (because there's not much else to look at) so first impression is: budget game.
The real appeal to me is the proposition of the progression and co-op with a fun shoot and drift core. The trailer should lead with that, I think.
Looks right up my ally! Good to see the switch get even more support!
Escape Velocity anyone? If this even remotely resembles that classic I am sold.
Looks promising, just for the co-op. Without it wouldn't be that interesting.
I normally get bored with RType/Gradius style games, but the equippable items, loot drops, item progression ala Diablo and even Dragon Age has me interested...
Can't help thinking that this kind of resemblance to Helldivers quite a bit. I actually do like this game. Prolly get it.
Those early comments are harsh and uncalled for. Google the game for a video, 12min one of the first stage IGN hosts that has the designer playing/commenting. it actually looks fairly good. I could see buying this depending how they work out the rest of the game with the aspect of working with others. I don't get people over but rarely, not huge on online multiplayer as people tend to be punks when it comes to using people as a shield or loot theft.
No thanks
Sweet! It looks fun!
Looks great to me! I just hope its online co-op because otherwise that's a huge loss. I may still pick it up though - another title can't hurt.
HO-LEEEEEE! Moar shmups pls! Treasure? Cave? You hear?
Doesn't look too great
Looks pretty good actually.
Co-op sounds excellent. Just wonder if it'll allow for 2p co-op since I'm not sure how easy it will be if it's only 4p, unless it has online.
Looks very interesting. I might get that one
Could be ok with a few friends certainly.
I was hoping for Sudeki XL though; allow me to bask in nostalgia a little Climax!
Now that i've just watched IGN's vid of it, it looks good, i will definitely pick it up on the Switch
So many local co-op titles lately. Who would've thought?!
All this does, is make me want a Einhander rerelease for Switch. That's a shooter I've been wanting back for YEARS!!!
This looks great. Reminds me of Armada back on the Dreamcast. That was a great game.
