You know it's the middle of the week when the Media Create chart results emerge in Japan, and in recent times they've brought happy news for Nintendo fans. That trend continues this week, with a major release on 3DS and hardware positives to consider.
Starting with software we have Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia making its debut at number one with 131,668 sales. By comparison the multiple iterations of Fire Emblem Fates sold over 300,000 units on debut, but it's worth remembering that those results included two distinct versions and it was a 'main' entry in the series, whereas Echoes is a reimagining of Fire Emblem Gaiden.
Elsewhere Pro Yakyuu Famista Climax - a Baseball game - arrived in second place for 3DS, while Minna de Waiwai! Spelunker came in a modest 9th place for Nintendo Switch. All told 3DS and Switch games account for seven of the top 10; results are below with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [3DS] Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia (Limited Edition Included) (Nintendo, 04/20/17) – 131,668 (New)

- [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf Amiibo+ (Nintendo, 11/23/16) – 2,830 (165,015)
Moving on to hardware we see another strong week for Nintendo Switch in which it gains sales despite the only software arrival being that Spelunker port. The New 3DS LL (XL) also holds off the PS4 standard model to hold on to second place - the results are below with last week's sales in brackets.
- Switch – 48,694 (45,673)
- New 3DS LL – 17,570 (18,115)
- PlayStation 4 – 15,222 (17,067)
- PlayStation Vita – 5,164(5,592)
- PlayStation 4 Pro – 4,112 (4,855)
- 2DS – 3,945 (4,475)
- New 3DS – 1,114 (1,234)
- PlayStation 3 – 367 (432)
- Wii U – 262 (271)
- Xbox One – 68 (142)
Another good week from Nintendo's perspective, then, and it'll be interesting to see how big an impact Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will have in the next set of results.

This is not good news for Switch. It's massively behind Wii and 3DS in launch-aligned numbers, and it's even behind Wii U.
Also, see that new Switch game with whopping 7,447 copies sold? What a success.
@BensonUii PS4 has already sold over 4,500,000 consoles in Japan, and it's closing in on 5 million. You can't expect a mid-lifecycle system with millions of consoles already sold to sell as "well" as new hardware.
Another decent week for Switch considering the lack of releases and limited stock.If It can sustain 40k+ sales every week with 2 or 3 week spikes when big games release,then it will easily pass 3 million by the end of its first year.That's more than some predicted it would shift globally.
Nintendo really needs to beef up production and strike while the iron is hot before E3. Because after E3 all eyes will be focused on Xbox Scorpio
@Mahe Looking at how well 3DS continues to sell more than 6 years after it released,is a good indicator of how Switch will fare in the coming years.
@BensonUii You mean the 3DS family of systems that is selling around the same numbers as PS4 family? In addition to the fact that Japan favors portable systems.
@OorWullie Here's the thing: Switch is several hundred thousand behind 3DS in launch-aligned numbers. And 3DS still got that massive price cut just 5 months into its lifespan.
@Mahe: I don't remember so! How many 3DS were sold in Japan in the first 7 weeks? I don't remember several hundred thousands more than Switch's 700k
@EternalDragonX
I doubt that man. Japan will never be focused on Xbox. And Scorpio has a lot to prove power means nothing with no exclusives.
@Mahe not globally. 3ds struggles were mainly outside of Japan
@Mahe First of all spelunker is a limited edition only release in Japan. I doubt they printed more than 10,000. The wiiu and wii launched during holiday seasons. You can't actually get an accurate estimate by lining up the numbers for this reason.
Be interesting to see if the switch figures spike with MK8 release or not
Impressive hold. The Switch will probably sell around 80,000-100,000 units next week thanks to the release of MK8D.
@Mahe
The Switch was underpacing the Wii, 3DS, and Wii U due to the lack of supply during its launch month. More suppku was provided to the western territories, where the Switch is Nintendo's fastest selling console ever.
Starting next week, the weekly Switch sales will begin to significantly outpace 3DS, Wii, and Wii U weekly sales in Japan thanks to MK8D.
Also, I'm not sure why you believe the 6 year-old 3DS should be selling significantly more than the PS4 that is reaching its peak after last year's launch if the PS4 Slim, PS4 Pro, and FFXV. If anything, the PS4 should be selling more than it currently is.
Heh. Wii u's still doing better then xbox one. Will never get old
Looks like Japan isn't having In stock issues with the Switch, at least to the degree as here in the U.S.
Comparing sales numbers to other systems as to success or not at this point is beyond pointless at the moment for loads of reasons. Can't speak for this week but Switch has sold out all available stock in Japan so who knows what the actual early figures could have been, clearly does have momentum though.
@EternalDragonX I think that it will only have moderate success, it's going to be pricey i'm guessing at least 499.99, and it's being tailored to the hardcore audience. I really don't think the casual audience will hit the scorpio as much, I believe switch will sell much better than scorpio over the holiday season just because of it's broader appeal and cheaper pricepoint.
130,000 launch week in Japan is about what I expected from SoV-- with digital it's probably closer to 150k. Awakening was about 240k and Fates was 260k (the difference being Awakening hung around longer).
EDIT: My numbers were way off.
@EternalDragonX you're joking about Scorpio, right?
Says there that 1-2 switch sales are crushing Botw sales.
@Priceless_Spork You must be looking at the Wii U version.Switch version is 1 place above it with over double the lifetime sales of 1-2 Switch.
Another week, Switch still on top.
@Mahe that's not how it works. wii u failed and that was visible by a sharp drop off in sales a couple of weeks after launch. if switch keeps the momentum at 50k/week then that's very good!
and btw: what's really sad is that a game with 7k copies sold can be on 9th place.
Total Switch sales so far are:
Switch (released 03.03.2017): 700,573
By comparison:
Wii U (released 12.08.2012): 3,231,617
New 3DS(including 2DS) (released 10.11.2014): 5,563,163
PS4 (released 02.22.2014): 4,622,363
PS Vita (released 12.17.2011): 5,248,054
Looking forward to Fire Emblem next month. Have myself a Limited Edition preordered. My 3DS will serve me well on my trip to Germany in June because there is nothing to play on my Switch.
@Mahe But you should be able to expect high Game sale numbers forma system that has nearly 5 million consoles out and about in that country. . . . .Also - supply is still limited for SWITCH in Japan - I hope that changes for Mario Kart 8 DX launch this week!
@BensonUii I thought it was also going to be on Switch, so who knows it might boost both systems. I'm liking what I'm see regarding Switch numbers so far.
@OorWullie
Ah ok now. Thanx man.
(when I see your name I always think of oat willie)
Considering you still sometimes see Mario Kart 7 here, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will be a hit!

Pretty telling graph. Goes to show the difference between good launch sales vs. good sustained post-launch sales.
@westman98 also looking at the graph the drop off in weeks 2 and 3 with the spike in week 4 for switch was likely because of stock shortages otherwise we would have seen a much smoother curve heading into week 5. That upward trajectory is looking good, it'll only improve with with Mario Kart and Splatoon, maybe Arms, we'll have to wait and see
@Mahe You certainly have a unique way of analyzing results. To make something obviously positive into negative is démodé (very out-of-date).
@Brutchie-bear tell that to any ps4 owner before 2017
@EternalDragonX there is a lot more to the PS4 story then power early on. Xbox gave them the momentum everything Microsoft pitched was terrible. And PS4 was the cheep option..
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Your ps4 numbers are spot on but your vita numbers are wrong, it's at 5.589 according to mediacreate, not great numbers for either but moderate success with sales still ongoing. Switch should pass both next year maybe, certainly not this year
I wonder how much being only on 3DS hurt FE Echoes. It'll probably be my last 3DS game but I really wish it was on Switch, my current gen portable
@EternalDragonX no one cares about a hardware upgrade, especially since it requires a 4K TV to have a noticeable difference. Just like PS4 Pro failed to make waves, Scorpio won't do much outside of a niche group of hardcore gamers. Hell, XBO doesn't even have exclusives to make the $500 purchase worth it
@Mando44646
Yep it's pointless having mid gen upgrades, and that includes new 3ds. Next year Sony will announce ps5 and release it in 2019 or late 2018 in Japan then rest of world early 2019, this gen feels like it's coming to a early end.
@Mando44646 scorpio super samples the picture for 1080p screen. Basically what that means is the picture is produced with 4k assets and squished down to a 1080p image thus making for a beautiful 1080p picture. Also makes any game played on it run better and load much faster. Tgere is a reason to buy it even without a 4k tv. I myself have a 65" sony bravia HDR 4K so im good either way
@NintySnesMan we wont see a ps5 until 2020 earliest
@EternalDragonX
You could be right, but I think before then. Not too bothered when they release it, I would prefer a new handheld but can't see that anytime soon. They will keep selling vita even if numbers drop worldwide because of remote play and cross buy,
So much discussion about the Switch sales and all I really care about here is Echoes' strong start in Japan.
68 Xbox Ones. Wow.
I want Pro Yakyuu Famista Climax here in the States.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Are there separate numbers for the older 3DS models? I bet that would push the sales over 10 million in Japan. They love their handhelds. Switch certainly has a way to go but I'm encouraged to see consistent sales there. We'll see how the numbers fair once Splatoon comes out this summer. That's the tentpole release for Japan.
@Nintendofan83 total 3ds sales, including all models, are over 22 million
This week is the launch of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which will be the first big major Switch retail release since the platform's march 3rd launch.
Here's a blast-to-the-past to 2014 (Japan only):
Wii U sales the week before MK8 launched: 9,024
Wii U sales the week of MK8's launch: 19,312
Mario Kart 8 launch sales: 325,892
Now back to 2017:
Switch sales the week before MK8D launched: 48,694
Wii U sales the week of MK8D's launch: ???
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's launch sales: ???
That awkward moment when the Wii U sells better than the XBO from beyond the grave...
I think these numbers are pretty impressive. I hope for a bump next week as Mario Kart is released.
@EternalDragonX I have no interested in paying for a new console if prettier visuals are all it offers. I didnt buy the PS4 Pro and I won't buy Scorpio. Maybe if I was a new buyer, I could be convinced to get that model out of the gate. maybe
@Mando44646 I never owned an Xbox One, (Rare Replay and KI3 did make it very tempting), and I'm inclined to agree. I recently upgraded my PC and the Scorpio without exclusives is not that appealing for me because all of the notable exclusives are also on PC so eh.
All I need is the Switch and a PC, but if the PS4 keeps getting games like NieR, Persona 5 and Yakuza I will keep it hanging around.
@Wexter Yeah, I'm actually pretty pissed that XBO no longer has exclusives. I never would have bought one years ago if I knew I could get every exclusive (other than core Halo games) available on my decent PC instead. XBOs are a waste of money compared to the deep exclusive library of PS and Nintendo
