Hey! Pikmin, the 2D platforming portable take on the much-respected series, is heading to the 3DS in July. Of course some have wondered about its status within the series, though the name and style has always implied it's a portable spin-off as opposed to 'Pikmin 4'. That impression has only been solidified by the news of the game's primary developer, which emerged in an Australian Classification record.
The core developer is Arzest, an independent studio that's done a fair bit of business with Nintendo. It did some work on StreetPass games, and in recent years is well-known for Yoshi's New Island and the 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games; neither title is particularly bad, nor are they widely considered to be top of class on the portable.
It'll be interesting to see how this one turns out, while those a little unsure and still hoping for a 'main' Pikmin title on Switch can perhaps be a little reassured.
Thanks to all that sent this in.

It looks interesting, and I want to try it. That said, I'm not going to use this as a placeholder for a "real" Pikmin game. It just isn't. Let it be a fun side-thing, I say, so long as it doesn't delay REAL Pikmin 4.
Arzest...so yeah the game is going to suck then...
Looking forward to it actually. That amiibo looks sweet and the game looks like a good way to wait for the eventual Pikmin 4.
I frickin knew it
I just want that amiibo
Let's just hope this doesn't spell Chibi Robo for the series.
If they give us a real PIKMIN4, then Hey! Pikmin will be good.
If Hey! Pikmin is PIKMIN4, then it's poop
(Pikmin in my favorite serie)
I hated Yoshi's new island, but I'll wait for reviews with an open mind...
Let's be real though. Olympic Games is not impressive because it's a bunch of glorified sports mini games and you can't really blame them for being given that sort of project. and New Island only gets a bad because everyone loves the SNES game and immediately jumping on the art style despite it fitting with the Yoshi's series(Also the tendency of the internet to label the anything that isn't a 10/10 as the worst thing to ever happen)
Not arguing that either game is amazing but both are average at worst. Hey Pikmin is something a bit more different from other games in its series so it can stand out a little more.
I think we can be confident Hey Pikmin will be a solid game
RIP in peace Hey! Pikmin.
Yoshi's New Island wasn't great. I only played it for about an hour before getting bored.
That said, this Pikmin game looks alright so far. I'll just wait for Pikmin 4 on Switch.
If anything will kill the game it's the title. Why couldn't they just call it something like Olimar + Pikmin
Hopefully this means that the Pikmin game Miyamoto mentioned earlier is a different game from this (Pikmin 4 for Switch, anyone?).
This game makes me glad that the Switch is my first portable console.
I really hate these developers with a burning passion. Yoshi's Island DS was a mediocre game but at least they try to create some sort of plot despite how ridiculous the whole thing was. Yoshi's New Island was just dull in every single way and the whole plot was the biggest insult you can ever do to your fans.
Wasn't really excited about the game in the first place, but this seals it: Hey! Pikmin is off my list entirely.
Good thing this isn't Pikmin 4...
That worries me, but I do want the game to be good...
This has been known for over half a year. Why are people making a big deal out of it now?
Well, thanks for the final nail in this game's coffin, nintendolife! This is so gonna be the Chibi-Robo 3DS game of 2017.
Anyhow, I'll still get that adorable Pikmin amiibo (hopefully, it's available seperate from the game) and wait for a classic Pikmin on Switch.
God that's depressing. Yoshi's New Island is just so.... beige. If it was a curry it would be a korma. If it was a spice, it'd be flour. I was REALLY looking forward to this as well. It could end up being decent, but that's put a real dampener on my excitement.
Alot of people seem to hate this idea, but I am more intrigued by it. Bringing the Pikmin formula into a 2D platformer seems like a really fun idea to mess around with. So I for one can't wait to see just how its done.
I am the only one here that loved Yoshis New Island, it seems
It was much better than the N64 Yoshis story at least
I actually didn't mind Yoshi's New Island or M&S Rio. Played both to completion and M&S Rio was the best in the series yet on a portable.
Chibi Robo didn't grab me though. Didn't finish it.
I'll probably end up getting this just for the amiibo. Doesn't look terrible, not epic perhaps, but willing to give it a go. I like the idea of puzzles too. I think I might enjoy it.

I'll just get the amiibo, then.
Pikmin 4 for Switch!
Sighhh please be good please be good please be good
I'll still get it.
Pikmin in 2d looks interesting to me and I want to see how it turns out in the end.
I just hope that this is a one time thing and not where the series looks to continue in the future.
I will never understand how Nintendo can trust this lacklustre developer with their IPs.
Hmm so what is Miyamoto working on now? Super Mario Odyssey and other unannounced switch projects?
Hmmm I did enjoy Yoshi's New Island but it definitely felt like a step back when compared to the other games in the series, it just had a third party developer type of feel to it. Hopefully they have stepped their game up for this one, and now that I think about it I am betting that Pikmin 4 is probably unrelated with this game and is likely in development by Nintendo themselves for the Switch!
Yoshis New Island is not a bad game, very enjoyable, still playing.
Try it!!!
Come on y'all, let's not write this off from the outset.
I don't know a lot about Arzest, their games have been on the average side but is that because of time/resources/skills? Who knows, anyway this might still be another reason to keep my 3ds around for a bit longer
This looks GROSS but at least it isn't Pikmin 4.
I'm still going to buy it. But my expectations have totally tanked.
Oh, God. Arzest? This game is an instant fail.
...well, that's what my gut-feeling tells me anyway. Yoshi's New Island was a total disgrace and I don't expect this to fare much better. But who knows they'll actually manage to pleasantly surprise us.
@Joeynator3000 @Yosher Ugh. Why is this sort of comment even a thing? It's just useless toxicity, and it's especially useless when it entails condemning a game that no one has even played yet.
@BAN You obviously haven't played their games...
I don't think this is the "Pikmin 4" that Miyamoto was referring to. He said it was almost finished for an "unspecified" console. My guess is that it was planned for WiiU and made the shift to Switch. They probably wanted to implement some different mechanics with the console change and maybe improve the visuals. My bet is P4 is announced at E3 for Switch, releasing this Fall.
I have a bad feeling about this...
@Ryu_Niiyama I'm starting to think that the name "Nintendo Life" is meant to be ironic. Because it seems as though it doesn't mean "this site is here to provide Nintendo-positive content for people who like Nintendo" but is instead code for "this site exists so people who hate Nintendo have a comment section to complain and be bitter about everything Nintendo ever does."
@Joeynator3000 That's not obvious. I have played their games.
@Sakura Chibi Robo isn't Arzest. It's made by Skip Ltd. Other than that, I agree with your comment.
@Dpishere Compared to Yoshi's Story, though?
It will be up to reviews to determine whether or not I'm getting this one...
@Ralizah
Wasn't really excited about the game in the first place, but this seals it: Hey! Pikmin is off my list entirely.
Why not let reviews seal it, rather than prejudice against a developer? I'll be the first to admit, this developer has never produced an amazing game (though to be fair, their games have at least been respectable)...
...but even trash development studios can make impeccable games when under the proper guidance. And Pikmin being Miamoto's baby, you can bet he micromanaged the heck out of this title, especially with its transition into 2D to ensure the formula still worked. Now, I may not be a fan of a lot of Miamoto's recent work, but Pikmin is fan-freaking-tastic, and if these devs were simply making the game under his direction, that equates them to nothing more than foot soldiers under the command of Alexander the Great.
At least check how it reviews, that's all I'm sayin...
Some of those pikmin graphics look like the original DS
So...kazoo-based soundtrack again?

This game doesn't interest me at all. I don't really care that much about 2D platformers in general anymore, outside of a few special gems like Shove Knight and Mario Maker (on the Wii U). Hopefully, we see an actual Pikmin 4 at E3.
This is the type of spin-off that should be developed for mobile to spread the Pikmin brand amongst casual mobile gamers. At $40 Pikmin spinoff on an old and outdated handheld approaching the end of its lifecycle will not sell.
looks like a DS game the way they're splitting those screens
How many first party shovelware games will land on 3DS and Wii U before they both finally end? This is the first generation Nintendo has done this, no?
@BAN Thanks. That's what happens when I don't fact check. Chibi Robo wasn't that bad anyway, just would suit a younger demographic, I felt.
I'm sure Pikmin 4 will be announced at E3 for release this year as the more shocking entry in E3 as it doesnt sell huge numbers but enough to announce
I will wait for reviews before I decide anything on this game. The fact that they made two mediocre games in the past does not mean that every game from this studio will be poor from now until the end of time. Maybe they will surprise us and turn out a real gem this time.
@BAN Well some of us here like Nintendo. Hold the line! You can't let negativity win! Positive Ki to you.
It will probably not use much (if any) 3D since the video shows gameplay on the lower screen.
@Ryu_Niiyama haha. I feel so motivated now!
@Sakura No worries. I actually looked it up when I first heard about this game, because it was giving me Ziplash vibes. But I feel like this game has more going for it than Chibi Robo, so I personally expect it to be better.
I think the game looks fun and i'm willing to give the devs a chance, remember that Rocksteady weren't thought of fondly before they made Batman:Arkham Asylum, or even Retro Studios were an unknown before the incredible Metroid Prime so it's always worth just taking a wait and see approach.
Everyone knew this already. This will be passable.
