The Zelda series has portrayed Princess Zelda in an interesting number of ways, from the cocky pirate captain Tetra in The Wind Waker to the selflessly kindhearted Zelda from Skyward Sword, but none of them are as good as what Breath of the Wild has to offer, in this writer's opinion.

I'm still kinda partial to the Hyrule Warriors Zelda, personally. But, that may not count, huh? ^^;
She definitely has a lot of depth as a character. I wish there were a few more memory cut-scenes in the game so you got to know a bit more about her.
@Xaldin well there is a second storyline confirmed for dlc. Maybe it will be hers?
@MasterGraveheart sure it does, it's still Zelda
Her dress looks like a bed sheet
Without a doubt the best Zelda, characterwise.
@faint Yeah I just thought about that after I posted, that sounds like a great idea.
List doesn't count if it doesn't include dat booty!
I thought she was annoying. Kind of weak and constantly complaining... She looked good though
What happened to the tag line? Placeholder?
@Johnvlachos She's definitely not the best Zelda IMO. Skyward Sword's Zelda struck a chord with me and made me care about her more than BOTW's Zelda. Your points are valid, same points I was going to mention. I might also be biased because Zelda is a childhood friend that Link grew up with in Skyward Sword, and in BOTW, Link doesn't remember her.
@Xaldin There is more to her in the game than the memories, but I won't say where to avoid spoiling it, it can get pretty touching and sad when you piece it all together.
@Johnvlachos This.
And Mipha stole the show in this game for me. Link became even one with Mipha before Zelda. This Zelda is one of the biggest downers i know. Dont really understand why Mipha was jealous of her^^
I haven't beat the game yet....but I'm hoping her character improves from the memories. She seems weak and annoying so far.
This may be one of the best Zelda games ever. But this Zelda was my least favorite Zelda, due to her constant whining in every flashback. Compared to Tetra whom I let fire me out of a cannon. 😐
@Johnvlachos I mean, that's kind of how character development works. You have to start with a flawed character. For Zelda, her flaw was being naive about the world, combined with the urge to be the Hero of Legend rather than the goddess Hylia reincarnate. For that reason she resented Link and her Father.
Character depth. Actual story arc. Holding Ganon captive, as opposed to the opposite.
Yeah, I like this Zelda. I wouldn't mind see a more involved version of Zelda in future games, though. Sort of like Tetra, except without the sexist role reversal once she goes full princess.
Her actual voice annoys me. It's like a stereotype of what a princess is supposed to sound like and it seems forced. But, it's the most depth I've ever seen come from her. That's well done. The voice itself... lose it.
Wanted to watch, but spoilers...
Far from the best to date. She had an okay role and her design is nice, but she far from being as great as she was in Skyward Sword. TP's Zelda also had a more important role.
If (or should I say when) a Zelda movie happens it might help if she can actually join Link on the adventure. She should be able to hold her own with a bow, some ninja-skills taught to her by Impa and maybe even a little magic. Wisdom is obviously supposed be her main trait, so using her wits to get them both out of sticky situations gives her even more to do.
She could be tempted to stay in hiding and abandon her people, which is where Link would come in, inspiring courage in her. Her wisdom could in turn possibly influence a crucial decision Link has to make at some point.
Those are just vague ideas of how Zelda could be given a more active role than usual, which could also be applied to a game if it were designed around co-op (or how about taking inspiration from GTAV and switch between the two in another open-world?).
You can't date a fictional character...
Yeah, not watching because of spoilers.
Still think this Zelda is the best Zelda
Mental complexes towards your father and bodyguard should not count as character development. Mental problems are not a requirement to have a deep character.
@Alikan I think it's more so that she confronts these fears and misconceptions. Eventually understanding them both more and facing the reality of both. Changing her general outlook regarding her job.
No because this Zelda is the Princess of Flashbacks.
Oh forgot to mention nr 1 Zelda. Tetra and its not even a challenge.
@MasterGraveheart that's how I feel about Ganondorf in Hurule Warriors! I love his design!
I'm surprised at how much of a backseat Link took compared to Zelda. He was practically just hired muscle in this game.
@walrusballs More like a bathroom towel. Like
, exactly like one.
@Xaldin 100% agree. I wish the main plotline was a little longer with more hints to the past. Really enjoyed the game though.
Sakurai and Link know why she's best Zelda

@Yrreiht I must disgaree. Unlike TP's Zelda, who was doing things from the shadows, BotW's Zelda was actively fighting to keep Ganon sealed off. No other Zelda has done this. Period, so she was instrumental in making sure there was still a land to save.
@Alikan -and these are where exactly? I've been playing the game and I have seen none of that. So frankly, I think you're talking out your ass.
@Dakt Cause she is literally fighting with her life on the line to keep Ganon in check until Link can come and defeat him?
I love how some people in this comment section are literally just glossing over this fact, and the fact she shows more depth than many versions of Zelda, just to take jabs.
No Zelda can beat Tetra-Zelda.
On the side note, (spoiler!) I kind of wish Zelda was an old woman when she's finally free. I mean come on, 100 years has passed, how come she's still bloody 17 ?! That would certainly be an interesting twist on the ending!
@MegaVel91 True, but she did all that off screen. It would have been amazing to see her actually fight in a battle against Ganon.
@faint I hope the DLC is the story of 10,000 years ago mentioned in the game. Would make so much sense to run it on this engine and art direction as opposed to using it for a different game
@Dakt well, in Spirit Tracks Zelda is Tetra's descendant, so no surprise she was cool
(I remembered incorrectly that we had Tetra instead of Zelda in Windwaker and both DS games...)
@Dakt #42 She doesn't even complain in the first three memories.
@Yrreiht #41 No. There is no physical battle. The entire 'battle' is shown in game, with Zelda using her power to contain Ganon while he consumes her.
@Dakt What's wrong with her complaining? It's entirely reasonable and justified from the characters position.
@Dakt How so? Was it the voice acting?
@Dakt I think that's a bit close minded to the character tbh. I would agree more if her reaction and feelings weren't realistic or understandable, but apply her situation to any normal individual her age. I'd be baffled if they didn't react a similar manner.
I think if they had given her more time beyond those small cutscenes and people wouldn't see her as being a big whiner.
@Dakt I'm not sure I understand the rationale, but I suppose it's just one of those things where they just don't click with you.
@-Green- Her having insecurities actually made her interesting to me. She's no promised goddess with immense power, she's just a nerd with a passion for ancient machines that had to fill a role she doesn't want.
Spirit Tracks Zelda is still my favorite.
I'm sorry man, but Spirit Track Zelda completely trumps BotW Zelda, in pretty much every way.
@Xaldin Not to spoil anything, so I'll keep it vague: Visit her room in Hyrule Castle. You'll get some interesting tidbits.
Zelda and the king's voice acting was offensively bad. Couldn't stand the American actors' poor imitation of British English. They weren't even consistent. So much choice for VO these days so no excuse for it
@KirbyTheVampire That would be ignoring how every shrine is his and his alone to enter, how the legendary sword is only his to wield and how much weight his title carries. He may have been primarily supporting Princess Zelda for most of the time, but that doesn't take away that his role is a pivotal one, and that if Zelda didn't decide to do what she did, Hyrule would've been wiped off the map regardless.
@-Green- The problem, is that a lot of interesting details are hidden in Hyrule Castle itself. As I've said to Xaldin, visit her room in the castle, and the place she used for her studies. You'll find things that add to her quite nicely.
@UmniKnight Oh I know. Her diary helps her character out a bit.
@-Green- Both that and her journal help to give her a bit more in that regard, though personally (and I thought this to be the case initially) I would've liked her being sort of your companion for a while, acting like was done in the cutscenes but then in-game.
@Moi haha im guessing because after she releases Ganon she finally took a shower after 100 years. Ew
I definitely think this is the best Zelda. Skyward Sword's Zelda was made to be likeable from the start, but I can't stand playing that game lol. Tetra was pretty rad in Wind Waker, but her character changed completely when she turned into Zelda.
@RedMageLanakyn
I found the pervert!
@walrusballs woah didn't think of that. Poor gal.
@MegaVel91 Comment was unnecessary, enough with the profanity.
If you rip her vocal chords out then maybe. Whoever casted these actors shouldn't have a job
I feel like there should be a film about the rise of the champions and ending in lino being placed in the shrine
@ProjectCafe Because of the booty comment or because I was suggesting a 117 year old had a nice booty?
Uhhh OoT Zelda goes incognito, learns ninja skills, picks up how to play a harp and teaches teleportation diddlydoos, uses a magnesis rune to open metal gates BEFORE runes were a thing in true hipster fashion, and shoots a solar beam at Ganon so you can thrust your stabby through some pig skull. Oh, and she dreamed about you before she met you, had more sense than the king in not trusting strangers, and really didn't show any romantic cliche feelings for you. Top notch Zelda in my book.
I've tracked down 11 memories so far and she's definitely the most developed Zelda to date. I like her.
Let´s be honest. Of all Zeldas, this Zelda has the finest booty.
@KirbyTheVampire - Good point. There's no mention of Link's Courage, and you don't even need the Master Sword.
Hhhmmmm.... No sir, I don't like it.
Skyward Sword for me.
@UmniKnight Yeah... After reading her journal, she's a lot more relatable.
I found her to be a bit whiny.
