A lot of the talk in the past week has been around Splatoon 2, but let's not forget that the original Splatoon is still very much active and a hoot to play. Now Nintendo of America has teamed up with Battlefy to promote an online tournament in the original with a cool prize - a trip for four to this year's E3.
Battlefy is a platform that supports and enables online competitions, so in this case it's taking registrations for the U.S. Inkling Tournament on this page; you need to be in the U.S. and at least 18 years old. The infographic and details below have a handy summary of the key information.
Battlefy is hosting an online Splatoon tournament across different game modes, including Turf War, Splat Zones, Tower Control and Rainmaker. Anyone ages 18 and up living in the United States with a Wii U console, the Splatoon game and internet access can participate. The winning team will win a trip to Los Angeles to attend the E3 video game trade show this June and check out what Nintendo has in store.
To enter, just find three other friends (and an optional backup) to join your squid squad and register your team at https://battlefy.com/splatoon.
The qualifying round (Turf War) is on April 22 at 11 a.m. PT, but make sure to log in early and click the "Check In" button an hour before tournament time. Once the bracket is seeded, you can set up your qualifying match using Battlefy's Private Match Chat and then proceed to splat your way to hopeful victory. The top 16 teams in the qualifying round will then move on to the finals. In the finals, teams will play Turf War, Splat Zones and Tower Control in succession in single-elimination best-of-five play until only two teams remain. The Grand Finals will see the final two teams doing battle in Rainmaker mode to determine the winner. The finals will begin on April 29 at 11 a.m. PT.
It's relatively simple to get into, and the prize could well be worth fighting for. Nintendo is apparently planning a big E3, and the odds seem good for a live competitive gaming event with the likes of Splatoon 2 included; we hope something like that is in the works, in any case.
Will you and some buddies be entering this?

This sounds cool but I wish Splatoon 2 would just add a tournament mode.
Uhm... Yay? Cool that they're trying to get Splatoon revived off the hype Splatoon 2 is no doubt getting, but... isn't this a bit late?
I guess if its to hype up Splatoon 2 using Splatoon as a basis, then, that could work... It's just odd.
Canada not included (Well my team is mainly from Europe anyway...)
When it said "Step 1 grab your Wii U" I started laughing because people switched over to the Switch. XD
I still have my WiiU & it's super fun. It is cool that this contest is happening. I dont have a team to do this with however. Oh well.
SN: Loving that this is in purple.
@yokokazuo Really sucks how these kind of contests are never for Canadians.
Huh-huh-huh, it said grab your Wii U. /beavisandbutthead
At least Wii U is still being acknowledged by Nintendo to some capacity
When I was more active, playing at night versus/with the Japanese, every Ranked Battle felt like a tournament grand final, LOL.
Great to see that they still promote the original game!
It's even more surprising considering the fact that Nintendo recently are doing their best to present the Wii U in the worst light possible.
@WindWakerLink Uhm yeah. Now that you mention it: why is this in purple?
