It's Media Create results time, in which we see what's hot and not in the Japanese market. A major 3DS release from Capcom predictably storms to the top, while it's a happy 1-2 for Nintendo in the hardware stakes.
Monster Hunter XX (Double Cross) - also known as 'that new iteration that probably won't get localised' - is well out in front on the 3DS, though understandably hasn't quite matched the launch heights of its predecessor Monster Hunter X (Monster Hunter Generations in the West). Nothing else comes close sales-wise, with a top 10 full of PS4 and Vita games - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and 1-2-Switch crash the party for Nintendo Switch. The top 20 is below with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [3DS] Monster Hunter XX (Double Cross) (Capcom, 03/16/17) – 848,467 (New)
- [PS4] Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash (Limited Edition Included) (Marvelous, 03/15/17) – 53,747 (New)

- [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Limited Edition Included) (Nintendo, 03/03/17) – 32,115 (262,977)
- [PS4] Accel World VS. Sword Art Online (Bandai Namco, 03/15/17) – 32,016 (New)
- [PS4] Ghost Recon: Wildlands (Ubisoft, 03/09/17) – 26,628 (116,419)
- [PS4] Horizon: Zero Dawn (SIE, 03/02/17) – 18,096 (169,385)
- [PS4] Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix (Square Enix, 03/09/17) – 16,161 (78,931)
- [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo, 03/03/17) – 15,456 (115,737)

- [3DS] Pokemon Sun / Pokemon Moon (Nintendo, 11/18/16) – 10,128 (3,211,045)
- [PS4] YU-NO: A Girl Who Chants Love at the Bound of this World (Limited Edition Included) (5pb., 03/15/17) – 9,629 (New)
- [3DS] Future Card Buddy Fight: Mezase! Buddy Champion! (FuRyu, 03/15/17) – 9,349 (New)
- [PSV] YU-NO: A Girl Who Chants Love at the Bound of this World (Limited Edition Included) (5pb., 03/15/17) – 8,858 (New)
- [PS4] Grand Theft Auto V (Low Price Version) (Take-Two, 10/08/15) – 6,012 (303,506)
- [3DS] Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 Professional (Square Enix, 02/09/17) – 5,751 (178,604)
- [3DS] Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS (Nintendo, 12/01/16) – 5,646 (995,522)
- [NSW] Super Bomberman R (Konami, 03/03/17) – 5,583 (50,756)
- [PS4] Super Robot Wars V (Limited Edition Included) (Bandai Namco, 02/23/17) – 4,680 (126,486)
Moving on to hardware we have the Switch holding top spot, albeit falling to just under 50,000 units. The arrival of Monster Hunter XX helps the 3DS LL (XL) move above PS4, while there were also small boosts for the 2DS and the smaller New 3DS. The results below have last week's sales in brackets.
- Switch – 49,913 (61,998)
- New 3DS LL – 33,352 (18,360)
- PlayStation 4 – 28,805 (28,902)
- PlayStation Vita – 8,004 (8,398)
- 2DS – 6,131 (4,094)
- PlayStation 4 Pro – 5,823 (6,398)
- New 3DS – 2,796 (1,227)
- PlayStation 3 – 2,212 (639)
- Wii U – 368 (430)
- Xbox One – 135 (117)
The 3DS keeps on rocking, then, especially when Monster Hunter arrives. As for Nintendo Switch it awaits new retail releases before we can gauge its 'second wind'; overall it's a positive set of results for Nintendo.

Perfect.
So far, so good as expected.
Why isn't Nintendo outsourcing Switch ports of many popular 3DS games to extend the Switch library?
Start with all the small first-party games like Box Boy, and do the larger games later. I can understand why Nintendo keeps supporting the 3DS and its huge install base, but why not develop Switch ports of these games?
YAY....!!!
Finally...!
The Monster is coming and Boost up Nintendo Switch + New 3DS XL.
Put Monster Hunter on Switch and probably will ships more than 1 Million in one week.
Great Job, Nintendo !
That's really good sales so far for Switch and Zelda. That's 440,000+ Switch units sold in Japan in 3 weeks. So that's a 60% attach rate and that doesn't include digital sales of Zelda: BOTW. Just so you know Wii U's lifetime sales in Japan is 3.3+ million.
Good to see Nintendo doing well in the charts.
MHXX is a lot of fun and expands a fair amount on MHX/Gen. Plus G rank is always a welcome bonus.
Should've been on the Switch.....😢 (MH)
can you imagine MH on switch...
@manu0 In fairness Monster Hunter sells hardware. It could turn up on the Gameboy tomorrow and it would sell gangbusters. It along with Dragon Quest are probably the 2 biggest hardware drivers in Japan.
Nice continued sales for Zelda across both the Switch and Wii U considering the franchise isn't nearly as big there as in other regions.
@Spoony_Tech
Hopefully the next one will be.
Nice! It doesn't seem like Zelda sells in Japan the way it does in the west though.
How many of ya'll thought this was an article for Monster Hunter for Switch? XD
@ThatNyteDaez um. pretty sure Nintendo didn't expect Switch sales to dip below 50k BY WEEK THREE.
Good lord this thing is Wii U 2 in the making.
Go! Go! Go Nintendo, let's make 2017 a wonderful year.
That's a lot of Monster Hunter copies for a first week; and for an update release rather than and all new.
I'd be really shocked if the next Monster Hunter game isn't for the Switch; though if Nintendo wants it to boost switch sales they must fight Capcom tooth and nail to ensure it doesn't also release on the 3DS.
They also need another Switch title to boost its sales. Whilst still leading the pack it needs to keep offering more titles; I'm sure there are plenty of potential buyers just waiting for more support.
C'mon Switch!!
Well now Nintendo just has to keep stock in stores.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Pokemon is also a massive hardware driver. Not just in Japan, but worldwide too.
The funny thing is, the Wii U's 3rd week sales were over 100,000. Higher than the 3rd week sales of pretty much every other gaming platform's (DS, PSP, Wii, PS3, 3DS, PSV, PS4, Switch).
Too bad momentum collapsed and never recovered after a good 2012 holiday season.
@gatorboi352 Given the stock issues and the launch of MHXX on another platform, Switch sales dipping this low were to be expected.
@westman98 but stock issues are on Nintendo and are frankly inexcusable at this point. When will they release a product that doesn't have stock issues?
Not the greatest numbers for MH,it normally sells about 1.3 million for opening weekend,but still good though. Good legs for both zelda games and horizon. The drop in hardware sales for switch isn't a surprise due to shortages but nice jump for 3ds.. PS4 and Vita sales much the same as last week
@gatorboi352 When they release an Xbox One.
I'm still hoping for a Western release of Monster Hunter XX.
@Skunkfish wat.
@gatorboi352 You asked when they will release a product that doesn't have stock issues? It will be when demand doesn't exceed supply, such as the Xbox One launch in Japan.
Due to the high initial demand, consoles are almost always supply-limited in the launch period. That's true regardless of the manufacturer. The PS4 was old out everywhere in the weeks after launch.
Wow, Switch hardware outselling 3DS + 2DS hardware in Japan during the Monster Hunter XX launch? That's stunning! I'm not sure if I'm shocked at the numbers or the fact that inventory is actually available there.... That's a good sign.
@Skunkfish @gatorboi352 True enough, no console stays in stock at launch, it's always an issue (unless the console is a complete bomb like WiiU, or XBox One in Japan), the real question will be if Nintendo can improve the supply chain to keep up with demand in relatively quick pace to keep resupplies frequent enough to hold inventory. Something they DID do with 3DS, and something they did NOT do with Wii.
Nintendo consoles sold 92,560 units, or 67.3% of all consoles sold in Japan last week. That's a great week.
Wow Nintendo did good this week. Switch sales would be almost double if stock were available..
Loving my Switch so far.. it just feels perfect.. Nintendo's engineering of the console can't be commended highly enough.. best designed console throughout the industry since the GameCube.. by far the most intriguing and accessible consumer piece of tech since the Wii.
Now bring on the games!
@BornInNorway81
I was thinking the same thing. New Switch games do not have to be on the level of Breath of the Wild or Splatoon 2. They could port some 3DS games at least to the eshop. Didn't Nintendo consolidate their handheld and console teams under one roof not long ago? Any new 3DS games should be released for Switch too. Nintendo needs to get more games going for Switch whatever it takes. Hopefully E3 will surprise us.
@Spoony_Tech All in good time.
@BornInNorway81 'cos too many ports' says someone somewhere on the internet who has no intention on owning a Switch.
Monster Hunter on Switch must surely be inevitable...
Also, XBox One had a great week (in terms on % increase)
Is the Switch also sold out in Japan? or are these sales number actually what the demand it?
Trust Senran Kagura to be second. That be all those pervy waifu hunter for you.
Nier Automata is selling much better than I thought it would, good stuff
@gatorboi352
Releasing the Switch simultaneously worldwide on a single day probably plays a big role in these stock issues. That has pretty much never happened before in the history of major video game platform launches.
Saying the Switch is a "Wii U 2" due to its 3rd week sales in Japan is about as ridiculous as Gamestop claiming the Switch will outsell the Wii due to its high launch sales in the west. It's still FAR too early to make bold claims like that.
@Ichiban I think it looks really drab : /
Monster Hunter XX (Double Cross) - also known as 'that new iteration that probably won't get localized' - why?
Holy smoke! Dem Monster Hunter numbers, for one week! Good to see Mario Maker sell well.
With Monster Hunter XX out of the way we will most likely be getting some Switch Monster Hunter news in the next couple of months.
And just as mentioned earlier, we see the Switch curbstomping some Xbox One soldiers in Ctrl+Alt+Del's strip of today in the Console Wars arc. Aside from the games becoming weapons in this antropomorphic metaphor (hence the Triforce guns), it's just glorious to see the Switch's strong points getting weaponized like that.
@gatorboi352 hardware, especially when new, is difficult to make. You aren't just burning discs, there is real engineering involved. That is why Nintendo, and all consoles in history, have shortages at the start.
monster hunter switch is dearly needed.
@Mando44646 well, it may not get localized...on 3DS...cough.
Awesome, awesome news, glad to see Nintendo smashing the competition again on the hardware front. Also, LMAO at the WiiU beating the xBONE
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I would add Pokemon and possibly Yokai Watch to that list of series that sell gangbusters in Japan. Pokemon is just as big as DQ and MH in Japan. Yokai Watch is big, but it is new and targeted towards kids so we'll see if it can sell a ton of Switch systems as it did for 3DS.
@gatorboi352 umm... they probably expected it as they know their own stock numbers being shipped out... you seriously can't buy a normal retail price Switch here... Trust me I've been checking a ton of stores regularly and it's just all sold out... Mind you I'm in Hiroshima, so maybe there are more else where, but man good luck finding one... the thing is selling out as fast as the stores can stock them...
I just want a normal retail priced Switch, is that so hard to ask?!?!?!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Not to mention pretty much everywhere I've been is sold out of Switches in Japan so I am surprised the number is ~50,000. Looking at the lineup of games, it should continue to sell strong in Japan throughout the year, especially once Splatoon hits.
@gcunit You could say they're monstrously sized in numbers.
@TsukiDeity I meant to say 3rd party. I dunno about Yokai Watch, it's a new franchise and interest waned considerably I think for the last game.
Still very surprised that the Switch is quite hard to come by here in the UK at the moment too (at normal price). Must admit, I was not expecting that.
@gatorboi352 Zelda could only take it so far for so long, meaning the numbers had to start declining at some point. Not to mention its mostly Nintendo fans buying the Switch to begin with. When the big heavy hitters are released, sales will jump right up again.
Nintendo anticipated this, that's why they padded out the rest of 2017 with the heavy hitters. Rather than just release them on launch day.
@TsukiDeity "umm... they probably expected it as they know their own stock numbers being shipped out..."
If they expected it, THAT is the problem.
Good for them. I gave up on monster hunter generations. I did everything I wanted to do and I'm NOT buying the same game twice essentially. However, I will buy MH on switch. That's a day one purchase right there.
I think we won't see a Monster Hunter game for another two years on the Switch ( I really really hope i'm wrong). I'm to old to wait.
