Nintendo has released a series of commercials to promote the quirky multiplayer appeal of 1-2-Switch, one of the lead titles for its forthcoming console.
Each clip shows off a different mini-game, and the approach is similar across all of them - it begins with the host passing a Joy-Con to another player and instantly starting the game, a clear message to potential buyers: with this console, your next multiplayer challenge is never far away.
What do you think of these commercials? Do you think they do an effective job of "selling" the appeal of Nintendo's new platform?

I was suddenly reminded of that TV show, Banzai. Hilariously Japanese.
The commercials look good production wise but the game itself is liquid excrement. The Japanese are bonkers and in to this kind of stuff more than the West, so it'll probably do best there.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE It is a bit Wii-esque, but I think it'll be fun on its day. The fact it's not a pack in is ludicrous though.
Nintendo like us to have fun, but gosh darn it are we gonna pay for it. Twice if necessary.
Where do people get this notion it should be a pack in? The bundle we're getting is already great value as it is already.
Not trying to cause heat but I am confused why this game HAS to be a pack in
@Grandpa_Pixel "The bundle we're getting is already great value as it is already."
In your opinion. I say it's not. As a console it's weaker than the competition. They're cheaper, have a larger selection of games, have AAA games, have much more third party support. The Switch has a paltry 32GB of storage. You've to spend more money to fix that. Want a traditional controller? More money. Want a charging grip for the Joy-cons? That'll be another €30 please. It would have cost Nintendo very little to put a lead and some LED's in the one in the box.
We know very little about online, what we do know sounds awful and convoluted. And we get to pay for this privilege. They've never shown themselves capable of doing online completely properly and they've the gaul to charge us for it. There's a tonne of negatives. Battery that expires. It's the first Nintendo console that has a shelf life.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Have you tried the Nintendo Switch yet? Or it's games?
They're creepy and the kooky, mysterious and spooky, they're all together ooky, the Switch family.
1 2 Switch !
1 2 Yay !
I like them all (still not getting 1-2 Switch at launch... maybe I'll trade in some of my 3ds games for it at some point)
@Grandpa_Pixel No, then again I never played Super Man 64 either but I know what I think of it.
I can't wait for this. Looks like it's going to be great silly fun when there are groups of people over.
I can see why it's not a pack in; some people will hate it as it's the exact opposite of their idea of what a game should be. Packing it in would put people off buying the Switch.
Nintendo's smart idea here is to make the Switch different things for different people. Some will want it as a home console, some a portable. Some want casual party games, some want big experiences. Don't like 1 2 Switch? Fine! I don't like Call of Duty or Fifa but I don't get riled that they are always the best selling games of the year.
Personally I'll be getting Zelda to play on the train commute, then 1 2 Switch and Mario Kart for when friends are over.
Well, they certainly sell the whole casual/family/party Wii-like aspect of the Switch effectively. It's not the part I care about however.
I'm pretty keen on the joycon rotation minigame. That's just brilliant use of the hardware.
I'm glad to see they have a person back in charge of representing the system to some degree. I enjoyed the Wii Would Like to Play guys.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Fair enough. We both have our opinions.
Don't want to burst ppl bubble but in the future there will be better party games than this smelly turd, throw it in the trash already. Just my opinion though not everyone will agree
@NintySnesMan
Yeah.
I hope Nintendo will make Switch Party in the future.
So far, 1 2 Switch is more like a "Salad" games rather than a "Main Course" games.
Nope.
If this had been Wario themed I think I'd probably like it more. Is it a video game in the mould of Zelda? No. Does it look like it might be a laugh with some friends/family or after a few beers? Yes. Probably not until it has dropped in price though.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE you really like poop, don't you?
@NickOfTime90 don't start on him, he just does it to wind people up and its just getting boring now.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE If you haven't played Mario 64, I envy you.
@Bunkerneath yeah, you're right.
@HappyMaskedGuy oh, great reminder! I may watch that tonight 😂
I can't wait to get 1, 2, Switch on launch!
Said no one ever
@Roarsome sums it up perfectly
My opinion of this has changed over time and I'm totally getting this package.
If i had to purchase extra peripherals to enjoy it I wouldn't be so inclined but it's a great family title that you can pick up and enjoy anywhere. I've preordered at £35 which isn't bad.
This looks hilarious. Can't wait to play it.
BoTW SE, Neon Switch, Charging Grip for JoyCons, a BoTW amiibo. All together that's about £440 (or US $547) for me. I'm pretty over budget here but I was really hoping to get Snipperclips and 1 2 Switch too. I think I'll be sticking to just Breath of the Wild for a loooong time.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
"They're cheaper" they've been out longer so price has come down plus new editions are NOT cheaper.
"have a larger selection of games" of course they do they've been out a long time! The Switch hasn't even been released yet. You can't make this comparison.
"have AAA games" ok yes agreed, at present no third party AAA games (except FIFA) announced for Switch and Indies are no substitute but they don't have Ninty's games which are mostly AAA games.
"have much more third party support" yes this is obviously a sticking point. Hopefully more third support including some AAAs will be announced once the Switch starts selling and becomes a viable platform.
"The Switch has a paltry 32GB of storage. You've to spend more money to fix that."
If you buy downloads only then yes you're need to invest and prices are coming down all the time. Buy mainly cartridge and you will only need to invest in say something like 64gb microSD, currently about ~£20.
"Want a traditional controller?"
By all reports the JoyCons in the grip is pretty comfortable. I'm holding out on buying this accessory until having played for a while.
"Want a charging grip for the Joy-cons? That'll be another €30 please" this is another accessory that is far from necessary. I'm not sure why you need this. The JoyCons last 20 hours. So unless you can't be bothered to put them back into the Switch... and if you're playing with a pro controller anyway... Why didn't you list all the accessories while you were at it?
In my opinion the Switch is worth the starting price.
The game look fun It's definitely for some more relaxed people, that don't need to be told "it's fun" to start having it
Dad gamer here. I'd never dream of buying this for myself but now I have little one, it's on the list. I think this will be fun for her and anything we can do together and enjo gets my thumbs up!
The grip for the controllers is essential in my opinion. When I played the Switch on Saturday it was quickly apparent that Zelda and Splatoon 2 use the motion of tilting the controller in order to aim. This would not work if the two joy cons were not in a grip.
In reponse to people who can't see the point of the charging grip. If you have a second set of joy cons, you are going to need a grip at least, which costs £10. The downside to this is that the Joy cons cannot be charged unless they are connected to the switch. But my other set of joy cons are going to be hooked up to my console. I know you could take them out, but I want them to be fully charged most of the time so I can take them out with me to play with work colleagues. The charging grip will allow me to charge both joy cons and also acts as a grip, effectively only costing £17 more than the normal grip.
I'm gonna get this game; I think it could be great fun. But that's probably only because I can get it $40 from Amazon. I really want to experience the HD rumble, and this game seems perfect for it.
Normally when Nintendo's presentation of a product is baffling, I see the Japanese advertising and think "oh, so that's why." In the case of 1-2-Switch the messaging in both Japan and NoA seems pretty similar, and is equally baffling why they're trying to Milk the Wii vibes quite so hard 6 or more years after the fad faded.
I say this realizing that 1-2-Switch is much more made for Japan than the West, and they seem to have a stronger interest in it overall, and the whole "Karaoke" nature of the title fits in well with Japan's love for actual Karaoke.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE You should try Superman 64, then promptly go buy 1 2 switch (but not the Switch). You'll have so much fun with 1 2 swich in the box than you ever could with superman.
@Talkshowhost Were you able to get a sense of if BOTH controllers needed to be tilted together, or if only one was the main gyro input when not in a grip? I still have dreams of playing with the controllers separated. If the rotational axis of both controllers are used together, it wouldn't work. If only one was used, then you would have to rotate only that one stick for something like Zelda. (Something like Splatoon just the nature of play does kind of require the grip or Procon though.)
If this was a launch game for the Wii it would've been a massive hit, but will it be a big hit on Switch?
@KIRO completely agree... it is more something I am considering to play with my daughter and partner. Though our daughter is 7 months so may have to wait a couple years...
Say what you want about it but I am really looking forward to this. Probably not gonna play this for the ages, though.
@NEStalgia I didn't get to split them unfortunately. The staff couldn't tell me for sure either.
I'd had thoughts of splitting them and playing free hand but maybe this will be an option in the control schemes of games?
I don't want to risk it so I've got a charging grip on order.
Great ads. 1-2-Switch is not my cup of tea, but Nintendo is doing a great job showcasing the game. It starting to look very fun!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE How is it that you've played 1 2 Switch when a) it hasn't been released, and b) you aren't buying the system for a few decades?
And I'm still waiting for you to explain why comparing something to cancer can be vile and disgusting, but comparing something to domestic abuse is merely drawing a harmless analogy.
@Grandpa_Pixel Entitlement.
@Grandpa_Pixel Other than Zelda, there are no stand-outs. And SLIGEACH_EIRE is right; it's a money pit. Everything you need to make it a whole console and complete from a value proposition is extra. It's neat, it's cool tech... but the way it's priced and what's included, the launch package objectively isn't good value. It's only through the eyes of a Nintendo fan who looks forward to their favorite 1st party games on the system that it becomes a day one purchase. I'm getting one for that reason, but I know I'm getting screwed and I'm kinda pissed. Nintendo knows this is the only way fans can play the newest iterations of their favorite games. The fact that they are using this to charge a premium for the system and overvalue/overprice everything else is troubling.
1-2 Switch should have been a pack-in. Its analogous to Nintendoland and would go a long way to further demonstrating the joy-con difference and what value they add to gameplay on the system. Instead, they charge full price for a tech demo with limited appeal. Bad move.
@Talkshowhost Ahh, bummer, thanks! Personally I have that stand-alone 2-set Joycon charging dock on order since I figure it'll let me charge easily from both freehand and gripped play and is easier to swap the Joycon from the grip to the dock than fussing with the USB cable in a charging grip. I might regret that though.
The split play thing is the only thing keeping me on the fence between the Procon and a second set of Joycon though.
Makes me glad I preordered this.
This is actually starting to remind me of Warioware... I'm now intrigued.
I'm glad 1 2 switch isn't packed in because you will be paying a premium for it. I would rather buy it when I want it..
@Tsusasi The mass market determines whether it's objectively a good value, not you, me, or anyone on this site. While anecdotal, I have heard quite a few people who aren't hardcore Nintendo fans think it's a good value for $300.
@Achoo Glad I'm not the only one to notice not only his negativity but how quickly he dispenses it.
The price for the console is fine. I wasn't expecting to get a joycon grip at all or the strap add-ons.
The price for 1,2 Switch is not fine. Who's gonna pay full game price for it? Even though it looks like a lot of fun, they're just mini games. If it was either packed in or much cheaper people would love it.
It'd be cool if you could exchange your Gold coins on My Nintendo for some minigames from 1-2 Switch.
As it stands, I probably won't be bothering with this game. It looks reallllly bad imo. So far the only game I want to try is the ball game. I just won't get enough use out of this to justify the purchase. Hats off to you if this is your kinda thing, though.
if this had warioware on it people wouldn't be asking for the pack in, but thats the vibes i get from 1 2 switch should had been a warioware game. but that might not sell to casual crowd to well either tbh.
@Achoo Huh? Not to sound rude, but your comment made zero sense to me- Wii Sports ringing a bell at all???
Dumb? Really?
If 1 2 Switch was a Wario game it would be alienating to a broader audience. I played Wii Sports and Wii Play with my Mom and Dad a lot but they only tried Wario Ware Smooth Moves once.
Also if the game was a pack in, all of you people that hate it would have to pay for it even though you'd never play it. I guess you could trade it in for a dollar if that were the case.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Please try and stay positive! Lot's of people are excited about SWITCH and the different things it has to offer. . Please don't try and ruin the fun for other people.
@Talkshowhost @NEStalgia About using motion with controllers separated in Zelda and Splatoon, here's a little hope: The big presentation pointed out one method of play as sitting down relaxed with a half in each hand. I don't think it specifically mentioned Zelda or Splatoon but it does suggest a major strategy for games that require both halves and it would be weird if 2 of the big ones didn't support that.
Not that Nintendo has a problem doing weird stuff.
@aaronsullivan Good point, and now that you mentioned it Treehouse Live did mention it specifically for Zelda, so it probably does work. The only unknown is how do motion controls get used in that context.
Splatoon might be different, but that's ok, a game of that intensity can require specific control setups.
That January presentation needed to be a lot more like these videos: Focused and FUN.
These adverts have made the lightbulb finally click on what Nintendo are trying to do with 1-2 Switch: A video game where the video bit is not important.
I love that as a concept, we've come so far with controller features that they can take centre stage instead of a screen.
I must be a bit dumb as it's taken me long enough to get it!
