We got the chance to get our hands on Splatoon 2 yesterday during Nintendo's UK Switch Premiere, and we're happy to report that it's utterly fantastic.
But don't just take our word for it; here's (almost) ten minutes of direct feed gameplay, captured on the show floor by our very own Alex Olney.

Watching these kind of videos only make me more desperate to play, lol. And who is the one playing blue? That person is good at the game!
I immediately get the urge to play Splatoon again!
I need to see more information about the game before I get too excited. From what I'm seeing it just feels too samey. I'm hoping for a better single player experience this time, flesh it out.
@Dakt no one seems to be reporting one way or other. My instinct is digital.
So..... Lovely yes. But what about any form of campaign? (Unless I've missed that stated) I absolutely loved the originals story mode and boss fights. It's a big deal for me!!
@Dakt yeah, that was going around Twitter but I'm surprised that many questions still remain unanswered: Analogue triggers, virtual console, Wii/Wii U download support, price of online, transfer of eShop purchases, ... I would have thought these would have been answered by now.
@Dakt Inconclusive to be honest, there's more movement than you'd really expect for digital triggers, but not enough for them to be analogue. It's possible that they're pressure sensitive but it's probably safer to assume they're digital to avoid disappointment.
It's basically the exact same, except it doesn't have the instantaneous warping from the Wii U map screen, and you have to pay for online play. Since we all know the quantity of online games will be anaemic on this console and the features will be bare bone, very little people will be online, and it's therefore worthless.
Same thing for Mario Kart 8 "Deluxe": pay again for the exact same game except no free online.
No thanks.
It looks great. I'm not sure what people mean when they say "it looks the same". What were you expecting or hoping for?
I've decided to not buy the console until more games are announced but this game makes doing that really, really hard.
@NX64 Treehouse yesterday confirmed there's a campaign.
@Simbabbad i agree. Something people seem to be overlooking in regards to Nintendo trying to now charge for online is that they haven't actually earned the right to do so.
For comparison, I have an XB1 and a Gold subscription. That is THE standard for a paid online service. I get multiple free downloads each month. Like, full games that are also great games had I paid for them.
There's absolutely no way in hell that Nintendo's paid online service for switch will match Xbox's gold subscription. Nothing Nintendo has done in the online realm up to this point suggests they can, and so I do not expect many switch adopters to also pay for online.
On topic, Splatoon 2 looks like a DLC pack for Splatoon. Sadly like some of the other titles shown off for switch, Nintendo will be charging a premium for it anyways. I gotta say, as a Wii U owner, switch does not give a lot of incentive to upgrade in march.
Jump with the bottom button instead of the top one? I hope it allows remapping then. Even if it's easy to adapt to it, it's one of those things that really shouldn't be necessary, and it may have an impact on more than just Splatoon for those of us who use Steam Controllers.
Can't wait to import the soundtrack from Japan!
Will this mean the cheesy comercials will come back?
You're a squid now, you're a kid now.
Servers cost money. Why shouldn't we pay for online? Sony and Microsoft have charged for years. Plus if it allows Nintendo to build a better online experience then it's worth it.
This looks really fun... shame it's kind of bare bones in terms of adding new features and plays mostly like the original but if it's broken don't fix it? I'll most likely get it anyway.
@gatorboi352 Everyone had to start somewhere, I'd say the Xbox 360 hadn't "earned' the right when they started charging for online, but for some reason enough people bought into it.
Now, if the service doesn't show room for improvement over the issues the Wii U had, then fine, you will have a point.
My guess is they want the chance to prove that they have improved though, thus the two seasons of free online before the paid version comes into effect.
Sounds more like splatoon map pack to me...
Graphically it also looks the same. Switch seems a big jump forward compare to 3ds, but a tiny one from WiiU...
@Ootfan98 My apologies, I forget every now and again.
But with 3 puppies I need the practice to keep up my reaction speed. Can't lose a hand to eager teeth and all...
@crystalorbie ha ha
Can't wait for this game. And when MS first started Xbox Live they charge people for online services while giving them absolutely nothing. Until this generation, MS didn't offer anyone free games, but could do so once the service grew. Nintendo is trying to grow its platform, so it's charging people to play online. Really, Wii U's online was pretty good in terms of fidelity. Switch will likely continue that trend, but improve. Most people perceive Nintendo's online services as "bad" because of the lack of voice chat, which I take issue with because that isn't an issue of quality. Yes, Smash could use work, but MK8 and Splatoon are as good as you'll get without being charged to play people online.
Again, Nintendo is trying to improve its offerings and charging people will help them obtain the necessary capital to reach the levels of competitors. However, I won't defend the free monthly rental for NES and SNES games because that's legitimately egregious, those games should have online features and be free as long as someone pays for the premium service.
I am hyped n not hyped it's a sequel which is awesome but have too see what the differences is gonna be like leading upto the games release.
I may give Splatoon a chance this gen. It looks good from Alex's video.
While I dislike the idea of paid online, I'm willing to give it a chance. If MS and Sony do it, why everyone's hating on Nintendo? Have they forgotten they are working with DeNA on that front - we don't even know the price! For all it could be, online may be cheaper or more expensive.
And if they had mantained free online, everyone would be screaming "online is going to suck! They don't have funds to maintain a good online system!". Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
@Mellor2000 Exactly. If it's as poor as everyone seems to be assuming it will be, don't pay for it, just as you wouldn't pay for any poor service.
@gatorboi352 There's no such thing as earning the right to charge for a service. Producers are inherently entitled to charge for a service in exactly the same way that consumers are entitled not to pay for it. Gaming is not exempt from fundamental economic principles.
Man, I poured so many hours into Splatoon on Wii U
I imagine I'll be putting a good many hours into the sequel also. Looks fantastic, and it has a story campaign this time, not just single player obstacle courses.
@lilredkoopa Splatune 2!
This is so much better than a port. Looks amazing. I can't wait!
Does anyone know if you can play with joycons not on the grip? So you can aim "a la wiimote plus" like in call of duty? That would be awesome! (Missing opportunity on the wii u)
Looks great--seems like the new weapons have more firepower and that rat-tat-tat-tat of the aerosprayer that I love so much.
As far as "samey", I did see footage of multiplayer with the ink rails that were featured in S1's campaign mode. That should be an interesting mechanic, as will having players hooving from above.
I am slightly (very slightly) disappointed the super jump ring is visible again. When your teammate does that, it gives away your position and is just cause for finding a new team. (So don't do it!)
I did not pre-order but I'll be sure to buy one for Splatoon's release. Hoping actually for 2 by holiday 2017 so we can play Spla2n locally (finally!).
This game looks great. A slight upgrade in graphics but lots of new ways to play. This was my most played game on the Wii U and this will be the system seller for me. I'm not planning on buying a Switch until there is enough to play consistently. If I wait until July when this game comes out, I'll have lots of other games to play with it to. In the meant time, I can play Zelda on my Wii U.
At anyone not sure about whether this should be a full sequel ( @FragRed @gatorboi352 @PotatoTheGreat @arnoldlayne83 ):
This is a reserved look at the game at this point. It doesn't come out until Summer and if it's like the initial Splatoon launch they will reveal new features and explanations every week leading up to it and then unroll new features after launch for months. I think they want another Summer of Splatoon and I don't see why they shouldn't.
Also, local turf war play and voice chat is a pretty huge improvement for some. I, for one, can't wait to play together with my family rather than taking turns.
Also, Story Campaign apparently? I must have missed that during Treehouse even though I saw most of it. Any more details besides it will have one @GrumbleVolcano or @JaxonH ?
Hope to god it's not as much of a mishap as the first.
Literally 2 things made it bad, that were easily fixable:
The controls and online groups for the original gamemode.
Here's hoping the sequel actually improved
The game looks great and the controls are perfect. Can't wait to use the duelies myself when the game comes out
So the pro controller will use motion control like the gamepad? If so this is great! Been waiting for this feature. This will also make lokal multiplayer more easy, as for now only one player can use the gamepad for gyro controls. It's fun that there will be a campain, but for me this game is for online play. Of course it looks like the original game, but what do you expect? We should be happy this will be released so close to launch. Most of the game will look the same because we allready played the first, they don't need to make big changes to the game. Most of the game is fine, there are just a few things they should improve. This doesn't mean they have to change major things in the game, so I welcome an updated Switch version.
