A major press conference, due soon at the time of writing, will feature Niantic and Sprint discussing a collaboration for Pokémon GO; the details have already been officially confirmed, however, along with some positive news for those hoping to expand their Pokédex.
Reinforcing the recent chatter around new Pokémon coming to the app, Niantic has now confirmed that its social media channels will be revealing details on new pocket monsters for the game on 12th December. Data mining has led to speculation that the natural progression to Gen II is on the way, so we'll see whether those expectations are met.
As for the Sprint collaboration, 'over 10,500' locations - Sprint, Boost Mobile and Sprint at RadioShack - will become PokéStops and gyms:
As part of this collaboration, Sprint, Boost Mobile and Sprint at Radioshack stores will become PokéStops and Gyms, giving you even more places to stock up on Poké Balls and Razz Berries and to battle your friends. Sprint locations will also feature in-store charging stations to keep your Pokémon GO sessions going even longer. Sprint also brings a great network and an unlimited data plan to support your search for Pokémon no matter where they are hiding.
What new Pokémon are you hoping to see in Pokémon GO later this month?

nice! bring on the 12th
LOL @ charging stations at Sprint stores just because of Pokémon Go. I don't care if there's a Dragonite nest there, I am not sitting in that place for any reason
Yeah Gen 2 baby!
Oh yeah, and I guess I'll do it as well.

"Pokémon GO is dead and Niantic can't revive it."
"I can finally evolve my Scyther!"
"Is it legendaries or Gen II Pokémon?"

"I can't wait to catch an Agumon!"
Adding gen 2, especially in winter, when there is so much that still needs to be properly completed/balanced in the game could end up ruining it so badly that the game dies completely.
If they are to add gen 2, they would need to be EXTREMELY careful about how they do it, and probably do it gradually to make it easier to balance as they go.
Personally, I'm hoping that these 'new Pokemon' are either novelty Pokemon relating to their collaborations (like in Ingress you get special items bearing company names/logos)... or are just the gen 1 legendaries (which really need to be added before gen 2 either way).
Sprint? Bleh.
Ideally the ability to select a Gen 2 starter again. I wants me a Totodile
@DragonEleven It should be fine, as you said "Their changes they've been making clearly aren't to prepare for gen 2". So they aren't even close the gen 2.
As for legendaries having to come out before gen 2... because we got Celebi before gen 3? Or half the world got Mew before gen 4? Because Jirachi was released before Pokémon Channel? Can't remember Gamefreak refusing to release a game because a Pokémon wasn't available to the mass public before, not sure why Niantic should hurt themselves to do it.
I'm looking foward to gen 2, I definitely do agree the deadest of winter isn't the best time to do it... however, this is an announcement AFTER the supposed "8th" date we had heard. They could just announce gen 2 is coming in February.
"...stock up on Poké Balls and Razz Berries and to battle your friends."
Battle my friends? Are they adding this feature? If what they mean are Gym battles, I heartily disagree that I'll be able to battle my friends.
Looks like Pokemon Go is starting to get better once again! Guess I oughta start playing some more.
@NoxAeturnus Maybe they mean "battle your friends" as in having a blazing argument? Heard more than one of those in a phone store before.
@DragonEleven You do realize while it's winter in the Northern Hemisphere, it's summer and warm for half the planet, right?
@ShadJV Yeah, but do you realise that average winter temperatures in the southern hemisphere are comparable to cool summer temperatures for the majority of us in the northern hemisphere?

RadioShack still exists?
It seems the official Pokémon Twitter (not Niantic or Pokémon Go) has confirmed we will hear about "more Pokémon" on the 12th. This confirms that it's not a single Pokémon. Also, in a chat between Niantic & Sprint for which a small audience was in attendence Gen 2 was mentioned.
However, this could mean a "gen 2" of Pokémon Go, as in a big update & "more Pokémon" could refer to the legendaries.

I'm not a Sprint subscriber (I have Tracfone...and a $10 monthly phone bill. ), but having more PokeStops isn't a bad thing.
@SmaMan That thought actually crossed my mind when I read the article.
Personally I hope it ISN'T gen 2. At least not all of it. They need to balance out type distribution. We've got 3 ghosts, 2 steel, 3 Dragon and no dark currently.
