Distributions will come in a variety of forms in Pokémon Sun and Moon, with one method being QR codes. The QR Scanner function can only be used in the game after you've cleared the story, so it's an incentive to get through the campaign.
As promised, The Pokémon Company has now distributed the first QR code; the North American Magearna code (and instructions) are below - the European equivalent is expected on 6th December.
1 - Complete the main story
2 - Choose the QR Scanner function
3 - Line up the QR code for Magearna while pressing the R Button
4 - Visit the deliveryman at the Antiquities of the Ages shop in Hau'oli City to get Magearna
5 - Be sure to save your game!
It should be noted that the QR code will work 'indefinitely', so don't fret about beating the game quickly if you've not yet done so. This one is "level 50 and comes with a Bottle Cap attached", according to Serebii.
If you're in North America and have the QR Scanner unlocked in the game, check it out and let us know what you think of this Steel- and Fairy-type in the comments.

Very cool. Thanks NL!
As a very casual Pokemon player stuff like this would pass me by without these updates.
Thank you! It worked for me!
I've had the QR Scanner ability in the game since the beginning. I doubt this code will work until you beat the game though. I'll have to give it a try.
Beat the game? Definitely not before 2017! Haven't even left Melemele yet!
@-DG I just tried to scan it in Sun, where I haven't beaten the game yet and it told me "This QR cannot be scanned till u become champion". As for Moon where I have already beaten the game, it worked perfectly.
Has anyone not been able to get all 100 Zygarde cells/cores? I swear there is a bug that is not counting one, I used Serebi's guide and think I got them all but it only shows 99 in Moon.
I'm playing Sun now and keeping track of everyone to see if it is just me.
does this work for other regions (europe)?
Thanks for this, I'll do this when I get back for winter break.
Once again, Europe left in the dark. GG
@mateq Only for the US, though, as it says in the article, other regions should get this code in the upcoming days.
@GoldenGamer88 from what I've heard US codes worked for European version of XY and ORAS so I thought I would ask. (would try it myself but currently have no internet at home!)
Just finished the story yesterday. So this is perfect timing.
@Yorumi Really? I thought the cut scenes were an improvement, story-wise. It really made everything seem more cohesive. But I guess a skip button wouldn't hurt.
I'm taking my time to complete the Pokedex as I go... currently 50% complete having just reached the third island.
Will collect it once I do complete the game though.
Right on, I was waiting for this. Have all the new Pokémon registered in my dex, this will make a nice addition. Now to continue the agonizing wait for next month's Bank support update.
@Yorumi Good point. For me on the other hand the game pretty much end after the e4. I enjoy the story and the sense of adventure, even if it gets silly at times. Understandably they have to make the game for every type of player.
I was such a hater on this game for the first week, seeing as on release night everyone in line was adults 30+ older.
Then a friend let me play their copy for a day or two and damn........
It feels very similar to Pokemon Colosseum in regards to walking around and the plot, immediately bought it and its pretty damn fun.
Pokemon isn't the same as it was in the old days like with Blue version and Gold, but Sun/Moon though different is still pretty damn good.
0/10 too much water
How do you access the QR scanner in pokemon ORAS ??
@-DG can you do it in ORAS too ??
@Yorumi This game had way too many cutscenes. I liked the story, but it could've used more plain text. However, I see your point about having a more freeform game with less story. I actually love that in games that aren't Pokémon (this is my first Pokémon since Blue; I'm more a fan of stuff like Etrian Odyssey).
And, oh, if you hate the cutscenes now...you're going to LOVE the ending like I did. (sarcaaaaasm)
Nice
@Yorumi Haha, well as long as you're prepared, because no spoilers but OH MAN
"Endless" is truly the word here.
@-DG Ah, maybe I misunderstood. In any case, you have to beat the game to use it apparently, whether it's visible or not
@mateq Probably not, EU code is due to be unveiled tomorrow (6th December)
Cool. Then I have to finish the story sometime soon
I had to soft reset for an hour or two before getting one wth a good nature and fantastic IVs and I'm looking forward to taking on the Battle Tree with it. It's surprisingly powerful for a Mythical (not the typical base 100 every stat like most of the others) and its typing is fantastic. I'm still trying to figure out what to name it.
Personally I loved the story for Sun, lots of people complaining about "tired tropes" probably didn't understand how well the writers subverted them.. at some points I literally clapped at the way they mocked things they did in previous games. Can't wait for the Magearna though... got tired of soft resetting for a good natured UB-03 (not going to use it's name, no spoilers). Just going to accept the second best.
At the pace I'm going, I won't be able to use that code this year, glad it doesn't expire. Just finish the island trial with Sophocles.
@DanteSolablood I totally agree. Plus I really liked Lillie and would like to know how her story ends. Hopefully she comes back in another game or there is DLC.
I keep on getting legendaries with naturally high Sp. Atck a Timid nature. It's what I got the first time I received Melloetta and Magearna.
Not that I'm complaining.
@Mr_Zurkon I really liked Lillie & I thought it was brilliant that the message that she had to give her mother wasn't what most people would expect.
However, I'm not sure about DLC for the 3DS version of Sun/Moon. Personally I think Pokémon Stars will have a LOT more content. It was being developed alongside Sun & Moon... the long delay from the Switch launch is for more than "finishing". Maybe we follow Lillie to Kanto?~
~fan theory, Danté does not promise Kanto in Stars.
Can almost get this in Moon. In Sun I'm nowhere near finished it. I just started it again because I'm going to try and get every Pokemon in Sun and battle every trainer in the game.
The games really do need a skip button considering the amount of cutscenes. It will make any replays pretty bothersome. That said, I didn't mind the cutscenes at all my first time through. If people are really complaining about the story in this game, then wow, I wonder if they played any other Pokemon games because Sun and Moon easily have the best story in all of Pokemon (aside from the Mystery Dungeon games of course). Not saying the story is a masterpiece or anything, but narrative has never been a focus for the series, this game possibly being the only exception.
@Yorumi Just wanted to contribute here that I wholehearthly agree. Too much cringy worthly, baddly written and cheesy cutscenes. The story is better than an average pokemon game... But it lost all the potential with those stiff scenes and missed opportunites. I even think it could look better as a plain text, just like it was in the past - at least your imagination could add some spice to the characters, similary to reading a book... And you wouldn't have to look at your uncanny valley, always smiling Player Character.
Oh, don't forget hand holding! They put everything they got to make sure the player won't step anywhere outside the predefined path this time. Forcing player to "claim" each landmark flag and moving to a next island, just to explore freely the island you just left, left a bad taste. Also, there's no suspense nor suprise because you know what will happen when you reach the flag: another cutscene and/or battle.
And yeah, I wish you luck with the ending cutscenes & credits too
@Yorumi Good luck with your Dittos and battling then!
