Take a look at the eShop charts in any region and you'll see that the Gen 1 Pokémon games still consistently take the top spots, proving that there is still a market for the older Pokémon games. Over the past few years, Game Freak has also sprung to remake the first 3 generations across the most recent Nintendo handhelds, though this has largely been an effort to make it easier to access the Pokémon from each respective generation. Considering that the Gen 4 Pokémon games are still somewhat recent, some have wondered if Game Freak would continue the tradition.
IGN recently talked with Junichi Masuda a bit on the subject and he confirmed that Game Freak isn't ruling out remakes anytime soon. Here's what he had to say:
I think the remakes, like Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, is still an approach we're interested in. With the Virtual Console releases of the original games, specifically there had never been a way to bring those Pokemon over to the latest generation. It had always been that you couldn't get those Pokemon out.
While on the topic of the VC, Masuda was asked about the possibility of seeing the Gen 2 games on the eShop at some point. He said there are no plans for this, mentioning that the Gen 1 games were largely put on the VC as a 20th anniversary celebration,
With the 20th anniversary, it was the right timing to release the original games. I think that we really want to give people the experience of bringing these Pokemon from the original Game Boy and seeing what they look like in Pokemon Sun and Moon. That is something that I want people to enjoy.
Finally, Masuda was asked how the Pokémon from the VC games will transfer into Sun and Moon, considering that there have been several changes to training and battle over the generations. Of course, he was quite coy on this topic, so it still remains a mystery,
I wonder how they're going to change. I hope that's something people will look forward to seeing how it works.
What do you think? How long will it be until Diamond and Pearl get remakes? How do you think Gen 1 Pokémon from the VC releases will function in the new games? Drop us a comment in the section below.

As they say in the web:
Sinnoh confirmed!!, XD
Can't wait for Sinnoh remake on the switch.
I still see them bringing the 2nd Gen entries to the VC before the 3DS is put out to pasture. It could be they're also saving them for their own 20th anniversary celebration as well (though that's a stretch).
No plans for gen 2 VC?

I'd love it if the rumored Pokémon game on Switch is a remake of Yellow. It wouldn't really eat into Sun/Moon and would be a great way to start the Switch off with nostalgia. We've seen how well that works on 3DS with Gen 1 on VC. This would give Sun and Moon time to mature, and Switch users something to play until Gen 8 and then the inevitable Sinnoh remakes. I know this is a long shot. Just wishful thinking!
Sad to hear Gen 2 on VC isn't in the cards. It's still my favorite Generation.
Although the "no plans" thing could be BS. Plenty of times game companies have utterly lied, or made use of exact words to BS things they aren't ready to announced.
....Does this mean Wii U/Switch VC then? >_>
@Pikachupwnage I don't see it as a no, just a 'not right now'. They'd be fools to leave all that money on the table; I'm sure the investment would be worth it several times over.
I can't wait for a Sinnoh remake! Although I'd really wanna play a Reremake of Red and Blue, too.
@GoldenGamer88
For real? What makes you interested in another remake of Gen 1? Not trying to sound mean, but I truly don't see anything to gain from a Gen 1 remake aside from seeing the game with better graphics.
I really hope gen 2 comes on virtual console at some point... I'm excited at the idea of a Gen 4 remake using the Sun and Moon engine, and maybe getting some... ''Sinnoh-nian'' variants of Pokemon.
Well Gen 2 is my fav. Dang. Need to get Soul Silver now...
No Gen 2 on VC seems like a missed opportunity. Unless this means they want to re-remake Gen 2. Otherwise, why not get them out on VC so they can start making The Pokemon Company money again?
Bring it in 3D HD. It will sold like hot pancakes.
@Gorlokk Well, I got back into Pokemon when Platinum came out so I missed the first remake (and tbh, I don't like how the 3rd gen games look) and while yes, I did play the originals when they came out on VC, I'd simply love to see Kanto with SM graphics. But hey, Sinnoh in SM graphics would look cool, too. Sure hope we can customize in future remakes since I really missed that feature in ORAS.
Lol at the No Plans for Gen 2 VC. GameFreak is MOST DEFINITELY gonna want that money...
@Gorlokk I'd also love to see gen 1 re-remade, seeing as even the remakes Fire Red and Leaf Green are years older than Diamond and Pearl, and the oldest games not to have a remake.
Like other remakes you'd have updates to the mechanics. They could also pull a HGSS and add a few new Pokemon to the Pokedex, and make some slight alterations to the story.
RGBY to FRLG was a step up, but Gen 1 reimagined in full 3D, another 4+ generations onwards, could be massive.
There's no way they will ignore the gold mine of easy money that would come from gen 2 on VC.
They're probably just waiting and building a demand.
I don't really want Sinnoh in Sun and Moon graphics now Pokémon is 95% likely to be coming to the switch. I want Sinnoh in those HD graphics!
Pokémon: Nintendo's very own Memberberries.
I would not say that gen 4 pokemon are "recent". If my memory serves, they came out 10 years ago or so, which is approx the amount of time it took other generations to get remakes.
Switch isn't backwards-compatible with 3DS or DS carts, so unless it has access to the 3DS eshop, the next generation will be cut off from all the previous ones. And even if it does have 3DS downloads, that cites out Gen 4 and Gen 5 games...
I really hope there is a time when they start to realize there are alternative ways to play the older pokemon games. Would really like it if they stopped testing our patience and just released all of them on the 3ds vc.
Gen 4 and 5 my least fav and I don't care for remake I still need remake for gen 1 and 2 on 3ds but I don't think it will be happen
Been playing Soul Silver to tide me over till S&M.
Awesome game! I prefer it to the originals. 😮
The question regarding Gold and Silver on the VC is whether he was talking about the Virtual Console in general, or specifically the one on the 3DS.
Past remakes/rereleases have allowed for all current generations to be played on the most recent console, and we can already play all of them on the 3DS, so there's no need for any more.
They have implied that new main series games will continue on the 3DS, rather than going over to the Switch, but it would make sense for remakes/rereleases to be introduced on the hybrid console instead... and if we follow their current release pattern, then DPPt remakes would be next (probably due next year), with GSC rereleases on the VC a year or two later (possibly after a third 7th gen game, but before the 8th gen is released).
I wonder, are the remakes following chronological releases (making FRLG the next in line) or region setting (making DPP next in line)?
@GoldenGamer88 @Buizel
While I don't disagree that a gen 1 remake would be cool at least to see Kanto in 3D, I'm hoping for gen 4 and 5 remakes before they go back to Gen 1 again.
The pokemon company have already said they are making games for the switch, so who knows!
If they're doing another Kanto game, it should be a sequel. Kanto's already been remade several times, another one wouldn't really be worth it. What Kanto needs is a sequel that can take more liberties with the original experience and make larger updates to things like the Kanto Dex and region design, those aspects of the game have aged terribly. Otherwise, let's just wait until DP remakes on the Switch.
@shaneoh We got the RBY rerelease on the Virtual Console instead of another remake, so it's more likely that they'll go with a new->remake->rerelease sort of pattern
Gen 4 remake is next year. They remake Pokémon games every 10 years and next year will mark its 10th year.
@SakuraHaruka inb4: Hot Fire Red and Wet Water Blue confirmed instead XD
No, I NEED GEN 2 VC!!!
@DragonEleven
Good point, they've even included Pokebank functionality.
What I really want is a remake(s) that lets you earn Kanto, Johto, Sinnoh, and Unova Champion Ribbons with Gen-VI Pokemon (and Gen-VI ones brought into Gen-VII) . I'm OCD enough to want to take my teams through every League.
Come on! Getting Gen 2 on the virtual console for basically loads of easy money should be a no-brainer! Don't they like easy money?
@drewtoo26 Freaking, GENIUS!
Luckily I've got Gold, Silver and Crystal in my 3ds already. Been playin em like crazy.
With all the ds games on the wii u, it would be nice to see some classic pokemon games...
@drewtoo26
I thought that too. Yellow is the perfect one to make a remake out of. Great for fans of the originals and since Pikachu follows you around like in the cartoons, you would get a lot of young gamers to jump on it too.
@T1T4Nz Thanks!
@rdrunner1178 I completely agree, plus you get lapsed Pokémon players interested. The post Pokémon League stuff could be you going through the Orange Islands.
@Bolt_Strike I've thought proper Kanto sequels would be a nice move as well. If they do it, they should be a combined Kanto/Johto sequel since those regions are connected. Have them take place just a few years after Gold and Silver's adventure.
"Though no plans for Gen 2 On 3DS VC"
Will be on Switch.
I want Gen 5... just me?
I would kill for a gen 1 or gen 2 remake with the customazation that was in x and y (play as a girl, change looks, and buy new clothes). I love when you have the option to play a girl. It's easier to put yourself in the role of the character if you can make them look like yourself.
People talking about re-remakes now--this would've been perfect for yesterday because the endless onslaught of remakes is terrifying!
I legitimately do not understand why we can't have the original game merely hosted on modern tech (like the VC) and then use the new tech for new games.
I'm all for preserving old games because I think we'll regret it if we don't (for reasons other than pure nostalgia--look at that blank space in cinema history because they let the films literally rot in a hole), but honestly the remake/remaster thirst is getting so strong I feel like fresh, non-indie gaming is in danger of being choked out by the ideas of the past.
@Henmii Assuming the Switch will have VC.
@drewtoo26 No to a combined sequel, that didn't do GSCHGSS any favors when it came to game pacing, region size, and content. Let's see what Kanto looks like with a full modern effort behind it and what Johto looks like when it's not busy being Kanto's conjoined twin, we'll ultimately get much higher quality games if they do it that way.
If we're talking about more remakes, can it at least be Pokemon Snap or a modernized Pokemon Stadium game that you can import your Gen 6 'mons to? I don't think the main series needs any more remakes for the time being.
@Crimzonlogic Game Freak only remakes the games they once produced.
@Don,
Of course it will! Though I don't know if there will be any gb/gbc vc games, but we'll see!
@Interneto In that case, no more remakes, please...New games!
