Nintendo, it seems, has been missing the trick for years. With clone systems everywhere, and SEGA giving rights to people working out of sheds to produce ROM-filled Mega Drive / Genesis systems (or so it seems based on their quality), Nintendo releases one and the world goes crazy. Naturally Nintendo has struggled to make enough of them, but let's not go there.
The Media Create chart results are out in Japan and contain good news for the Famicom Mini - or Nintendo Classic Mini Family Computer, if you prefer. But first let's get the software out of the way. The first 3DS game is a newcomer in third place, PriPara Mezameyo! Megami no Dress Design; we're sure it's awesome. Beyblade Burst also arrived this week on 3DS, but didn't have quite as much appeal as designing dresses, which publisher FuRyu may take as a particularly brutal snub.

Moving on to hardware, it's the Famicom Mini destroying all in its path with over a quarter of a million sales; it is worth noting that it costs about the same as a full price game, however. Apparently the PS4 Pro shifted 65,194 units, according to Famitsu; Media Create just bundles the different forms of PS4 together.
- Nintendo Classic Famicom – 261,381 (N/A)
- PlayStation 4 – 92,344 (32,041)
- New 3DS LL – 20,345 (19,798)

- 3DS – 324 (408)
- Xbox One – 171 (181)
- 3DS LL – 57 (47)
Happy times for Nintendo. Retro sells, so no doubt the Super Famicom Mini is already in development.

I have to wonder if Nintendo really does have a minor inferiority complex from years of disappointing sales numbers. It would explain why they always underproduce for the first run.
Nostalgia sells.
No way is this a fair comparison in the "hardware" chart. You've got a €60 purchase going up against machines ranging from about €200-€400. It's a closed system. It would make more sense to be in the software chart as a collection.
@Exy: Or they're purposely undersupplying it to give the illusion of demand.
..someone was going to say it.
Poor 3DS XL/LL...
@SLIGEACH_EIRE To be fair I highlighted the price as a factor
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
The 2DS isn't that much more expensive.
I would argue not to include it as it is simply a high quality plug and play device, no associated software sales.
@ThomasBW84 Sorry, I didn't see that and was thinking of the previous article comparing sales of hardware in their debut week.
They'll need to make a strong case with the Switch as nostalgia isn't going to sell it.
Celebrity endorsement. Maybe the only hope they have to expand the average consumer's console vocabulary from PS/XB
NES Mini could've done the same thing if they released more then 20.
I don't even think the US got 200,000 of the things. Still this gives me hope for the SNES mini. I will fight someone in a store for that one.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE No need to apologise! But yeah, you're right that price is a factor, it's budget fun.
Has anyone who has got the nes mini plugged the club nintendo snes controllers that connected to the wii remote into it? And do they work...
@ThomasBW84
Unless of course you bought one off a scalper, then your budget fun became an expensive hell ride.
At least they shipped more than 1000 units in Japan...
The original 3DS is still selling more than the Xbox One, and even the 3DS XL?
@dazzleshell I'd have a Club Nintendo SNES controller, if Nintendo cared to release it for NA (without having to buy through ebay scalpers).
"Happy times for Nintendo. Retro sells, so no doubt the Super Famicom Mini is already in development."
Don't be so sure. Pokemon R/B/Y were consistently on top of eshop charts and still no sign of G/S/C on the way.
could this possibly sell like 5 million units at 15 dollars' profit per unit? 'cause that is pretty sweet.
All hail to Mini NES !
Why do media create insist on tracking every form of 3DS separately while grouping together the two different PS4s?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE how much does the 2ds cost now?
@Owaynott €110. Though I wouldn't call it a real 3DS in the same way a Wii Mini isn't a real Wii.
@feelinsupersonic I listened to Definitely Maybe the other night on a long train ride and thought of you. Just remembered that now seeing your name. I wonder what else I've forgotten from that night that will pop into my head some day? Anyway, it still holds up pretty well for being 20 years old, but I still like The Verve's A Northern Soul better, more variety.
I hope Nintendo decides to expand this NES mini success with a NES mini top loader, that can have 30 more games...put in Contra, Ducktales, Dragon Warrior, Track & Field and other classic third party games that are missing on the current mini. And you can even remake the dog bone controller.
"Retro sells, so no doubt the Super Famicom Mini is already in development."
Sure retro sells but this ranking is a comedy. You cant list something as the NES Mini with the real videogaming market, else you would also have to list some 20$ android powered craplet running the nes emulator or some 5$ key-chain lcd games... im sure it would also beat the PS4 in sales.
But yes, thanks to the cheap production costs, Nintendo is just printing (some) money with it for the moment
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Definitely true, the NES Mini is more like one of those retro game collections on disc, than an actual console. The difference is that you don't need to own a console to play the games I guess, the thing itself plays the games. But indeed, the price is a lot lower, and it doesn't even play any other games.
How many did the Woodi sell?
@Agent721
Love that idea!
Wonder when we'll get the virtual boy mini?
Shouldn't the software chart have a joint top 30 for the 30 Famicom games bundled with the Famicom Mini?! 😀
@SLIGEACH_EIRE the 2DS is $80 now with MK7 included. That's actually less than most deluxe editions of games. So your argument doesn't really hold.
@Owaynott
Would it be an eyepatch?!
@manu0 2DS is a turdip and not a proper 3DS, hence its name and its price. I wouldn't include it in this conversation. Here in Europe it's more expensive and I listed European prices.
You there's something fishy going on when Media Create bundles PS4 models, but keeps the various 3DS models like the new XL and old XL, 2DS, and new and original 3DS separate. Sony fans if you ask me, 3DS is certainly outselling the PS4...
@Exy underproducing artificially increases demand. they did that with the wii in the united states. btw the wii did the opposite of the inferiority complex as it granted them the hubris to create the wii u imo, heh.
After hearing that Walmart will magically have stock each day at 5pm EST, I'm not sure if Nintendo is really behind this scarcity, or at least 100% of it.
It's odd seeing a plug and play beating every other hardware.
@rjejr Good taste in music man. Oasis are one of my favourite bands,seen them live 10 times as well as Noel Gallagher in Bangkok.I was 16 when Definitely Maybe came out,the band of my youth. As for The Verve, Urban Hymns will always be my favourite but A Northern Soul is up there.
Very nice indeed. :]
However, why bundle the different PS4s together, but list all 3DS versions separately?
You can't compare the mini sales to the other modern consoles you dopes.
Now watch the Famicom Mini sales drop off like a rock next week due to selling through stock, LOL
@penamiguel92 @C-Olimar Nah, each 3DS model is different enough from each other to warrant not bundling them together. Plus, this actually gives us a more accurate metric of where each model is at, than if they were bundled together. It's better doing it this way.
That said, PS4 and PS4Pro sales should not be bundled together. They're definitely different enough to list separately. I'm willing to bet the Pro sales are much higher.
@OorWullie Always something about Urban Hymns I couldn't get fully into, too westernized or something. Not cowboy western like The Charlatans Us and Us Only, don't know what happened there, but not as Britpop as A Northern Soul. Lucky Man and Velvet Morning are the 2 standouts.
I wonder how the WiiU would have sold if it came with a NES controller and the same games installed that are on the NES Mini.
