If you're a Netflix subscriber then you'll no doubt have watched the excellent Stranger Things. If you're also a keen watcher of Nintendo commercials then you may have recognised one of the series' big stars from a Smash Bros. advert back in 2014.
The commercial focused on how amiibo interacted with the game itself, and Joe Keery - who plays Steve Harrington in Stranger Things - gets some significant screen time.
Was your memory jogged when you watch the Netflix series or is this news to you, like it was to us? Let us know by posting a comment.

Uh, weird article Nintendo Life. At least, to me it is. About as tangentially gaming related as a post can get.
@dronesplitter He was in a game commercial. How is that tangentially related?
But then bringing it up because of a show he's in now? I just find it weird, that's all. I see this is under random, though, so I guess that helps it was tagged that way. I must not be too familiar with how many things get tagged random, so if you guys do that a lot pardon me, I didn't notice it much I guess.
@A01 Glad I'm not the only one.
Though I'm still confused as I don't know what Stranger Things is.
We're at least 3 in the "Star Wars Misread" Club
Guess it's going to be a bit of a slow news day.
On Stranger things, I liked it, totally reminded me of the 80s of course. But I kinda felt it was just one big massive rip off of everything 80s. I thought by the end it would establish its own style. But that's just my own opinion.
Love the way its brought moody electro synth music to the foreground, which has been around forever, but of course it's all new music to people on the facebooks, lol. Maybe I'm just too cynical
He's also friends with people I work with.
@A01 I thought it said Star Wars b/c he was playing with a Disney Infinity Star Wars figure next to her Samus, which would be strange. I have Prime, not Netflix, so the show title was lost on me, but I have a lot of DI SW toys.
@A01 I did too! A very poorly worded headline, for sure.
Knew I recognised him from somewhere but just couldn't work it out!
Watching stranger things made me want to a) Finish playing Life is Strange and b) Rewatch Fringe
In another article about this, someone in the comments mention that Paul Rudd also got started in Nintendo commercials. Can anyone confirm/deny this?
@A01 oops... Me too, that is why I have veen reading the ews again anda again without getting the Star Wars reference. Still, he's an actor, as it seems, so... Isn't that his Job?
Star Wars misread as well
Yup, Star Wars misread we here.
Also on board thinking it's a bit random reporting this mini-fact now. I don't recall the site reminding us every time anyone else in a Nintendo ad has a new film/show out in the vaguely recent past. What are One Direction and Zelda Williams up to these days?!?
It's kinda like being told about a conversation the writer had in the pub last night. "Oh guess what I just heard?"
@A01 Exactly. Stranger Things Actor Was In Amiibo Commercial
'Actor from TV programme also done other acting in trailers.'
And what?
Star Wars
I could see Telltale doing Stranger Things
I enjoyed stranger things as well. Made me want to crack out my Fighting Fantasy Gamebooks, 80's style!
Took me at least a minute to figure out it wasn't Star Wars. Even after reading the comments, I thought "what are you guys talking about it says Star Wars"
@dronesplitter It's a slow news time- all seemingly legit NX rumors have been exhausted and the only major first party release left is Pokemon.
They've done worse.
Oh no not Steeeeeeve he's such a jerk!
I've seen this many times, you mean to tell me people didn't know about it?
I think it was even on the Did you know Gaming episode on amiibos.
@dronesplitter
sometimes the news can be fun. It doesn't all have to be about NX rumors or video game reviews. (^_^ )/
btw, I kept waiting for something Star Wars related but nothing happened. (T_T )
@PLATINUM7 Watch it RIGHT NOW. I MEAN IT. IT IS YOUR DESTINY. And don't come back until you've seen all eight episodes!
@BigBluePanda I never realized how much I need this in my life.
I mis-read Star Was for Star Wars immediately thinking a Star was character was coming to Smash.
i read that as 'stranger things star wars' for some reason.
Like the many others who have already commented, I also misread "Star Was" as "Star Wars" and thought you meant that Joe Keery was in both Stranger Things and Star Wars. I was trying to remember who he could have played.
Perhaps you should rephrase that as "Stranger Things Actor" or "Stranger Things Star Joe Keery Was"?
Anyway, I totally remember this commercial, now! How... strange. Har har har, yeah, I'll see myself out.
@Mogster
I don't know whether it was how he "got started", but Paul Rudd was definitely in a SNES commercial in the early 1990s.
Just Google "Paul Rudd in Nintendo commercial" and you'll see it. It's pretty funny. Typical 90s cheesiness.
@A01 Hah, same! I read it and by the end I was questioning myself "Why did I read this article in the first place???Can't even remember now..." Looked up at the title again and still read it as Star Wars " Oh yeah right! Now what does THIS have to do with Star Wars!?!?" Didn't even realize it didn't say that until reading your comment. Read the title a third time and was like "Oh! Okay..."
Add me to the Star Wars camp as well. I think they could have solved it by not capitalizing "was". Kinda weit'd to capitalize connecting words like "was in" within a title anyway.
I agree, the story is kind of lame.
But I would like to say that Stranger Things is AWESOME!
Slow news day, huh?
I read this as Stranger Things Star Wars in Smash Bros Commercial and I was super confused.
Edit: glad to see it wasn't just me.
Just like almost everyone else, at first I thought this had something to do with Star Wars.
He's a pretty decent actor and really delivers his character in "Stranger Things". Absolutely a must see show and is also based in the 80's if anyone here likes quality nostalgia. I never noticed him in the commercial though.
It's funny to me how people related Stranger Things to the 80s over X-Files. Yes, there are awesome 80s references, but it is so far more significant to me that Stranger Things is like X-Files with ONLY Cigarette Smoking man episodes. It stays on point and what a ride! Looking forward to Season 2.
@Damo: Didn't know about "Steve's" cameo . . . so thanks for this!
That trailer made me cringe badly. Nintendo has seemed to abandoned its style haha.
What? R2-D2 amiibo?
Read star wars too, thought star wars might've been in the background or something. That'd be more interesting than the actual article anyway
Add one more to the group that read it as Star Wars... Never watched Stranger Things, so that was the main thing that caught my attention here.
All I saw when I looked at the title was 'Star Wars in smash bros Wii u commercial''
@A01 "Star Wars" misread +1 for me.
I bought amiibo but I didn't get any girls. Am I doing something wrong?
@PokeMario
what amiibo did you get?
I'm much more interested in what the girl in this commercial is doing now. She is frickin cute
@SuperCharlie78 I was trying initially to work out if it was saying Star Wars was initially going to be in Smash Bros Wii U.
if nintendo ever decides to actually inform us about the NX i will know we have entered the upside down.
@Utena-mobile Zero Suit Samus
I read that headline like 7 times and read "Stranger Things Star Wars..."
I was so confused....
@A01 I kept reading the title as Star Wars. Must have looked at it 4 times and still saw Star Wars, lol
Needless to say I finally put my glasses on and went Ooooooh
Stranger Things Star Wars In Crappy Article
So is he always type cast as a *********?
Um....ok? Thanks for uh...letting us know I guess.
well I watch Chadtronic so this video isn't new but I DID NOT NOTICE THAT!!!
WOW! A amiibo can level up to level 50 in super smash bros.?
Findonovan95 really needs a non-creepy profile photo
