Not long ago we reported that Pokémon Sun and Moon are expected to make a splash this November; this was based on the President's Presentation for the company's financial reports. The presentation showed Sun and Moon trending well ahead of equivalent figures for Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby, and Nintendo stated that the demo had been the fastest to reach 3.5 million downloads.
Now, however, Nintendo of America has sent out a press release taking a different approach to the statistics, declaring the upcoming 3DS titles to be setting pre-selling records for the company and delivering the most successful demo to date. The press release excerpt is below.
Today, Nintendo announced that Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon are officially the best pre-selling games in Nintendo history. Additionally, the Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon Special Demo Version is the most downloaded demo on the Nintendo 3DS eShop in Nintendo History!
With the launch of the first Pokémon video games 20 years ago, the Pokémon brand quickly became a global sensation and hasn't left popular culture since. The Pokémon brand's 20-year celebration in 2016 has ignited fans' passion for the beloved franchise across the country and around the world with a wide variety of initiatives and new launches. As part of this banner year for the iconic franchise, video game players are no doubt anticipating the launch of the upcoming Nintendo 3DS games, Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, on November 18.
It's a different spin on the current statistics, it seems, and better reflects the evident excitement and anticipation for the new generation of Pokémon on the way.

The sales for this game are going to be VERY interesting indeed.
Not really surprised, this game is pure hype for all fans alike. Every trailer I get an off guard surprise every time. From Alolan forms to starter evolutions to even having more references that Kanto may possibly be in the Game itself!!! Really excited 😊!
Pokemon Go didn't hurt this game any that's for sure. Can't believe how popular this still is. Some thought this fad would go away over 10 years ago. Here today it's stronger then ever!
Let see if Sun and Moon outsells the original Red and Blue versions...
@AlphaJaguar All the Gen 1 games together sold 50 million. Considering that's most of the 3DS' install base, probably not.
this wouldnt happen if it wasnt because of pokemon go, just saying, so the people who keep trashing mobile gaming can get out , the pokemon go strategy also worked on me because i havent played pokemon since black/white and that was on my cousin's ds now thanks to pokemon go i wanna get this game !
@CrazedCavalier That's including virtual console sales though. For phyisical releases, red, blue, and yellow sold approximately 32.5 million units (according to Wikipedia).
But honestly, you're still right in terms of Sun and Moon not outselling the originals. That would mean over half the install base would have to upgrade... and that's not even including the hardcore Nintendo fans who own multiple 3DS's.
Let's see how this game does against Diamond/Pearl's sales.
I had very low expectations for this game and I'm still disappointed XD The change up is nice but now for the first time I cant stand a Water starter, and a lot of the new features are neat but not for me, and the performance on standard 3DS....argh.
Conflicted.
It's a new generation and not a remake. With Pokémon Go and the 20th anniversary I'd be shocked if it wasn't.
Great news! (And I'll be adding to the number soon!)
They were already going to break records, but considering that these will be China's first Pokemon games, they will be an even bigger success.
I pre ordered mine a few weeks ago. (smile face)
Super effective? More like a super effective critical hit!
I need to pre order mine still.
Impressive.
And these numbers could be even better if they opened up pre-downloading.
Well, hype + Pokemon GO publicity for the franchise + drought in Nintendo games = more preorders, I suppose. Could be wrong, though.
I preordered Moon awhile back and when I did, the clerk told me it looked like it was gonna be the biggest game of the year. I assumed he was judging this off the number of preorders for it.
@Nintendo_Ninja
China ?
It'll make up for the Switch Nintendoom in January

sun will be my first pokemon game
@manu0 I hope you enjoy it!
They finally understood why distributing a demo directly on eShop instead randomly sending to emails is the best choice. I hope they never do the same mistake again.
Looking forward to see how it does, but I care more about playing it at this point... 3 weeks to go
Gotta be because the Pokémon GO crazy bringing in more fans. Would be kinda of sad if there's a lot of ppl out there that play nothing but Pokémon games.
