One of our highlights of PAX West, from a Nintendo gaming standpoint, was Pirate Pop Plus. Developed by Dadako and published by 13AM Shipping Solutions, it brings Pang / Buster Bros. to mind and has a huge amount of retro charm; we certainly enjoyed our hands on time with it.
It's a game that's fast-paced and has a terrific aesthetic, and the good news is that it's not far away. It's coming to the eShop on Wii U and New 3DS in North America and PAL territories on 20th October, and will cost $4.99 in the US. It's crossbuy too, so you can get both versions for five bucks on the same Nintendo Network ID.
The video below does a great job of showing off what this one's all about, so check it out.
Are you planning to pick this up when it arrives on the Wii U and New 3DS eShop? Let us know in the comments.

i don't get why this isn't on old 3ds as well.
Indie games let you get a cross buy while Nintendo makes you buy the same game on 3DS / Wii U and WII too
Looks good.
Wouldn't have even been on my radar if NL didn't praise it. Definitely interested now.
@JHDK I suppose they are using tools that aren't available on older 3DS. I know Unity only supports the New 3DS but I don't know which engine this game uses. That's merely an example. I don't see any other reason why they'd choose not to target the older model as well.
Seems like a good price. Very possibly.
That bird always makes me think of Startropics (RIP that poor series since it wasn't a thing in Japan)
Sad it's not cross-buy to original 3DS
I'll wait for a review. Definitely interested though!
Rated E for everyone.
Apart from 3DS owners. Hard to imagine how this game couldn't run on a regular 3DS!
I like the look of this one and really like the retro music. It reminds me of the Pang games and I think I'll buy it but there doesn't seem to be much space to move your character around which bothers me.
..heard these ARR a crossbuy! ...I don't believe my Buccaneers!..

Man, I loved Buster Bros., but part of the charm of that series (for me, anyway) was the various painting-esque backgrounds. I dunno if I can cope with willingly going back to first-gen Game Boy graphics.
Yeah ok - looks pretty fun, I'm in!
Knowing NoC, this game will most likely be 7 bucks...
I loved Pang Adventures from earlier this year, I'll definitely be giving this a look. Plus I love the original GameBoy aesthetic, I still regularly play on my backlight modded GBC and I'm lusting after a bivert modded classic GameBoy these days....
I was slightly interested, but $5 still feels like too much for such a simplistic arcade game. Most of things like that are $1 on App Store. Maybe when it hits a 50% discount mark...
I might buy this one. Looks great quality. Im pretty impressed so this studio deserves my support.
You know what this means people.
Time to stop putting it off. You need a New 3DS. Heck, you've been needing one for nearly 2 years now. Yaaaaah you know you've been putting it off.
That creaky old hunk of plastic needs an upgrade. Feed it.
What a lovely retro treat!!
Would go nuts if it has a subtle 3d effect like the one we have seen on Game Gear VC!! (Popping up the buttons and adding a small depth to the flat LCD screen)
People keep talking about the PS4 Pro, Xbox S, and NX, but all I care about is this game and the NES Classic Mini.
"and New 3DS in North America and PAL territories on 20th October"
Nintendo, you better make sure you dont try the cheap push for your new (old same) console with (minor joke) upgrades ....how about you release the official eShop sales numbers of 2015/2016 and compare your strategy with this.
@JaxonH I think most people have upgraded by now. I for one was very impressed by the new 3ds. I think if they would have launched originally with these new options the 3ds would be closing in on 80 mil instead of 60 mil sold.
@hendie001
You could be right.
Nintendo has a bad habit of releasing half-baked tech, "good enough" and yet not good enough to really impress thoroughly. Then mid-gen they fix it up right, how it should have been to start with, and then are stuck selling a product like "hey, remember that one thing a few years ago that was kinda cool, well here it is again, but better".
Wiimote should have had Wiimotion+ at launch. 3DS should have had super stable 3D at launch (and Miiverse), and Wii U, well, they never really did improve upon that. But you get the point.
@JaxonH The operating system on the wii u was so horrible when it was first released that millions of buyers were scared off. Now after countless updates it runs fast and is very stable. My first week with my wii u it crashed multiple times but in the last year I don't think it has happened once. So I guess im saying I agree with your statement. lol
I like it! But I don't like the old Gameboy looking graphics...why did they opt for this retro look??!
@JHDK Probably a development issue. Unity supports New 3DS but not the old model. I'm not sure if this one was made in Unity but that has been the case with other indies.
Too bad, anyway, because I for one won't be able to play it. I have an old 3DS and see no reason to upgrade with NX on the horizon.
Looks good but I don't like the padding around the game area. It looks like they were developing it for mobile with virtual buttons and they just ported it over to 3DS. They should have done it the Shovel Knight way and use the whole screen. I'm not against the Retro graphics style, but wasting half the screen space is a bit ridiculous, I think.
@teoulas Hi there! Alex from 13AM Games here.
Just letting you know, by hitting the trigger on your New 3DS you can actually "zoom in" on the game screen, similar to Gameboy virtual console games. It's instant so if you ever want to switch back just hit the trigger again.
Zoomed out is pixel perfect, zoomed in is filtered (just like GB VC).
As for questions about New 3DS exclusivity, that's a restriction from our game engine (Unity).
For NL:
"Avast ye: Pirate Pop is crossbuy"
"Pirate Pop is crossbuy. Shiver me timbers!"
"Yo Ho Ho: Pirate Pop is crossbuy!".
@13AM_Alex Great looking game. Gameplay seems frantic (in a good way).
Definitely getting this on the short term.
