The Super Mario series like so many others is brimming with secrets, some of them interesting, some of them not so much, but we're sure few would argue the best secrets take the form of complete levels for you to play.
That's why we've thrown together what may well be the top five secret levels from the entire mainline Mario series, but we've limited ourselves to one level per game to give everything beyond Super Mario World a chance. Check out the video above and let us know what your favourite secret Mario levels are in the comments below.

I'm pretty sure there is a note that tells you that there is a secret in the room ( Super Mario 64 ).
From this day foward "doodly-doo" is going to be my personal official way to refer to the sound effect Mario does when he enters a pipe.
No, I had never heard it before, and I'm loving it.
Oh nice! Original top something videos is always good! Good job thomas and Alex
Alex, I seriously love you, mate. Specially because I BEAT Champions road with the FIVE characters.
Twice.
@daniruy I swear I'll get there one day. I have only beaten it with Peach and Rosalina, and then decided there were too many other games to play to keep grinding the same level for days. But yeah, one day.
The Super Mario World secret levels aren't exactly hard to get too. It's all about looking at the circles on the map. The yellow flashing circles are single exit levels, where as the red/orange flashing circles have 2 exits.
If you notice the circle on the map leading to the backdoor level, it flashes red/orange, indicating there's a secret exit.
Champion's Road is the bane of my existence.
Ghost House on Doughnut Plains was the first secret level that I discovered, use a cape to fly up to the top of the first room and land on the platform and run to the end where there are four 1-Ups, enter the door and it'll take you outside where a crescent moon is waiting and a secret level that appears above the ghost house. You can repeat this as many times as you want if you need more lives.

never heard of level minus 1 in Mario bros!
Ah Champions Road, you nearly killed me! But I beat you. With every character. YES!
I love Alex and his "lovely people". I don't know if he's scoffing at us, or if we're really lovely, or what, but "lovely people" is just so...lovely.
SMBs world -1 gets my vote, as its probably the most legendary hidden level, because its a glitch and not done on purpose, but it is still there. I remember the first time I access it in the 1980s, not believing it was true and then being blown away when I finally managed to do it.
