It's pretty clear that, outside of some game-specific promotions, the Wii U is sitting quietly in the corner. A lot of Nintendo's marketing efforts have been on the 3DS, with company President Tatsumi Kimishima emphasizing on more than one occasion the desire to continue building the audience for the portable, particularly among children and women.

Nintendo of America has been very much part of that in devoting quite a lot of energy to pushing the portable over the last few months, often highlighting established 'evergreen' games. The latest commercial on its kid-centric Play Nintendo channel continues this trend, with 'Nintendo 3DS Summer' shining a spotlight on Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land in particular, all titles that have been around for three years or more.

Though the New 3DS XL is highlighted as the default system of choice, there are more small New 3DS models (albeit with limited distribution) on the way, while the 2DS is still a budget option that was recently cut in price to $79.99. It's worth remembering that the 3DS does still have life in it yet, leading hardware sales in the US during July with help from Pokémon and Monster Hunter Generations.
