It's pretty clear that, outside of some game-specific promotions, the Wii U is sitting quietly in the corner. A lot of Nintendo's marketing efforts have been on the 3DS, with company President Tatsumi Kimishima emphasizing on more than one occasion the desire to continue building the audience for the portable, particularly among children and women.
Nintendo of America has been very much part of that in devoting quite a lot of energy to pushing the portable over the last few months, often highlighting established 'evergreen' games. The latest commercial on its kid-centric Play Nintendo channel continues this trend, with 'Nintendo 3DS Summer' shining a spotlight on Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land in particular, all titles that have been around for three years or more.
Though the New 3DS XL is highlighted as the default system of choice, there are more small New 3DS models (albeit with limited distribution) on the way, while the 2DS is still a budget option that was recently cut in price to $79.99. It's worth remembering that the 3DS does still have life in it yet, leading hardware sales in the US during July with help from Pokémon and Monster Hunter Generations.

I find it interesting from a marketing standpoint that most of the titles listed in the advertisement were not only early entries on the 3DS, but also have had sequels since their release.
Would be a better advertisement if they didn't have some little brat commentating over it.
Nintendo should focus on 2DS. They still continue the old mistake of marketing the New 3DS models. The July NPD results showed that new buyers overwhelmingly want 2DS systems, so when Nintendo is trying to push New 3DS instead, it creates customer confusion and lowers the potential install base that a full focus on 2DS could achieve.
Didn't like "the little brat" either, and Fashion Savvy sliding in there at the end unannounced seemed stupid, but they are still trying, which is something.
Wii U is forgotten, it's embarrassing. Anybody saying Wii U owners shouldn't complain with NX coming out in March 2017 b/c Nintendo supported Wii U for 4 years really doesn't understand what the word "support" means. It doesn't mean move all your games onto the new console while your old one dries up and dies. And while it wouldn't help Wii U owners, no price cut on Wii U in 3 years doesn't motivate 3rd party devs to port their games to the system. Selects line is nice, but they seem to be pushing that more on 3DS than Wii U.
On a perhaps related note - in Target the past week, several Wii U games on clearance. Bayonetta 2, Hyrule Warriors, XCX, Mighty #9. Can't recommend #9, but those 3 for $30 each are all well worth it. Great exclusive games Nintendo never really promoted as great exclusive games. But so many Wii U games on clearance makes me wonder if Target is jettisoning Wii U. Maybe making room for NES Mini?
3DS family still going, Pokémon and MH Stories to come, as well as others. Good for them. NX should be a Wii U replacement first and foremost, milk 3DS for another 14 months.
Don't promote a newly released game or anything Nintendo. 😳
3D Land is not an evergreen title...
Well, not to be all negative but Splatoon and Super Mario Maker have had a lasting appeal on me to this day, along with all the DLC of Smash Bros that just ended earlier this year. Coupled with Yoshi's Woolly World, Fatal Frame, Xenoblade Chronicles X, FAST Racing NEO, Minecraft, Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, Pokkén Tournament, Star Fox Zero/Guard and Tokyo Mirage Sessions, i've been quite busy. But i agree non of these games are must buy/system sellers except for Smash Bros/Splatoon/Super Mario Maker.
@TeeJay The game came out 5 years ago, it doesn't get more Evergreen then that...
I guess it makes sense. Pokemon Go has given Nintendo great visibility as well as Mario being featured in the Olympic closing ceremonies. Might as well use that free press and advertising to introduce their systems and games to people.
I just picked up the mario themed new 3ds yesterday. I must say im impressed. think of how good the 3ds would have done if Nintendo would have released the the new version with the extra power, and the 3d that actually works instead of the old one.
I think it's fine if Nintendo keep remind this advertising even for some people think it was too old or repetitive. Remember, not every people in the world ever heard or ever played before the games above (Those 3DS games). So, it will be a very helpful information for them to getting know about those games. Hopefully, they start to like and purchasing some 3DS games.
Should probably...eventually...get Animal Crossing....
NoA is worthless. Reggie never brought it like he said he would when he became the face of NoA.
@Link41x ?????? What does it having come out 5 years have t do with it being evergreen? It's a (shorter than average) linear, one-and-done adventure. An evergreen title is a title that people play all the time. A game that gets updates and dlc occassionally. A game with an online community. 3D Land is none of those. I haven't touched 3D Land in years because I've already done everything there is to do in that game.
@Spoony_Tech They'd have to, you know, release a new game to promote first...
It's telling and more than a bit sad that the big-title games for 3DS are years old by now, but by now it's obvious that Nintendo dropped 3DS and WiiU to focus on giving the NX a decent start.
Well hey if you are buying a new 3ds many of those games are staples.
@TeeJay evergreen games are games that are always in season, meaning they always sell. Consumer replay has little to do with it as far as the definition goes. Think of 5 games you would recommend to a new 3ds gamer with no genre restrictions but is looking for general suggestions. I'm sure at least one of your choices would overlap with a large number of other users. That is an evergreen game.
@Barbiegurl777 you took the words right out of my mouth! I agree 100% with everything you said. Man, if it were not for Style Savvy Fashion Forward & Disney Magical World 2, I'd be buying nothing for 3ds this year!
I still play Animal Crossing New Leaf a lot.
I'm wondering if the push for the New 3DS, instead of the 2DS, is because maybe the New 3DS will have connectivity to the NX, perhaps as a secondary controller option for multiplayer NX games. Total speculation, I know. If it were to extend the 3DS line, then I would be all for it.
@Warruz Not sure what you mean? Only 3 games were demoed, all earlier titles sure but still sell well, but where are there sequels for these games that you are referring to?? This is a 3DS ad, not a Wii U one, so why would they talk about MK8 or 3DWorld?
@thehoppypoppy why wouldn't the 2DS work? if you are simply talking about connecting for use as a controller, well the 2DS can already do this with SMASH Wii U, so I don't see this as viable means to push NEW 3DS over 2DS (I think it just sells better), since they all seem to be usable in this way.
@Captain_Gonru "Remind me again why we're so excited about the next system?"
B/c it's supposed to be getting all of Wii U's games from this year - Pikmin 4, Luig's Mansion 3, Mario Galaxy 3. And probably amiibo sandbox MMO Mushroom Kingdom.
Or, maybe just ports of Pokemon Shuffle and Rusty Baseball and Steel Divers. B/c they won't tell us anything.
So that's why your crotchety, too much time discussing a new console that's out in 8 months that could be filled w/ great games or free-to-play ports. Could be a $350 home console or a $100 tablet. It's madness.
And lucky for you you aren't on Pushsquare, Sony has a press conference on Sept 7th for PS4 slim and Neo, and another on Spet 13 ahead of TGS, and maybe PSX early December. And of course PSVR in October which has plenty of games. And maybe a new handheld "Trinity". No matter when NX gets announced, Sony will drown it out. When it rains it pours, when it's dry it's dry as a bone.
"Do you like this 3DS marketing that's targeting young gamers in particular?"
@Captain_Gonru beer nap
Maybe NX is a Nintendo red hat?
"There's no place to pass out like it"
LOL at the squeezing-in of Style Savvy: Fashion Forward at the end as an afterthought. As if showcasing even a second of footage of the game would turn off the young male viewership.
When Nintendo said they are separating themselves from the competition I didn't think they would target women and children only. I thought they would focus a great deal on it. But I think there needs to be more substance and options for guys like me who want to love Nintendo like we used to but see no real reason other than the fact I'm buying monster hunter and pokemon. Literslly the only thing I like unless you pop out f-zero and metroid properly.
I'm astounded by how confused Reggie is. What used car dealership did this guy work at before coming to NOA?
