The Western version of the latest information drop for Pokémon Sun and Moon hasn't arrived yet, but following a mix of leaks and a twitchy finger at The Pokémon Company the Japanese trailer has gone live.
Before we break down what's new - with help from Serebii - let's take a look; you'll see all-new Pokémon and an extended look at the antagonists Team Skull, some of which was previously first seen in CoroCoro magazine.
That all-new one that kicks off the Pokemon reveals is apparently called Morelull in the West (according to leaks), a Grass/Fairy type with Illuminate & Effect Spore. The English name for the fish that adopts a 'school' form is apparently Wishiwashi, while the strange sea cucumber-like creature is Pyukumuku with the ability Innards Out.
The Alolan form Raichu is also new; its Electric/Psychic with the new Ability Surge Surfer.
Of course, we await the official release of the English-version trailer to confirm all of this, but it'll very likely be the exact same trailer as already released in Japan. As always we'll scour the official website when the localised details are revealed and break them down in a Gallery article.
So, what do you think of Team Skull and these new Pokémon?

From this video I can say two things.
1. That fungus pokemon is a step in the right direction for me
Had my doubts about the villainous team (thank you very much team flare), but seeing them partially in action, I'm daring to dream that they'll be good. Who's with me?
Alola Raichu looks great, it lost a bit of coolness in favor of cuteness, but it's double type and the habit to surf its own tail are awesome!
After years spent training classic Raichu I can't wait to give a chance to this new form!
It makes sense the Pika family would become surfers. They did back in Gen 1. And now they no longer need the waves
That Alohan Raichu is adorable. Some really great new Pokémon this gen, I already have about a dozen I want on my team haha. Gonna be difficult to narrow it down to six! Team Skull's designs and animation looks really nice too.
I was planning on waiting a few months after launch to pick this one up, but now I don't know. Might have to be a launch day purchase after all. It's looking superb.
This just looks better and better
Really loving the look of the new villain 👌🏼
Also, that mushroom will definitely be in my team
Why does the trailer show a normal Pikachu and Cubone? I thought the whole evolutionary line would get an Alolan form..
@Kimyonaakuma Exeggccute didn't get one either. Some Pokémon only adapt when they evolve. Would it make sense to change Pikachu when that thing can seemingly live anywhere, or Cubone when its a reference to the Marowak Ghost?
Pretty cool!
Good thing: Raichu getting love
Bad thing: We will probably not get Mega Raichu now
Ideally, what I'd want is for any fully evolved Pokemon to be usable online as a strong team member with reasons to use it over similar Pokemon when building a team. AFAIK Raichu doesn't really benefit very much by doubling its speed even if they buffed Electric Terrain to be a viable strategy. Buffing SpA would be better.
Why are Team Skull's models so ugly? They look like they came from a DS game.
BTW, I think Lillie will turn out to be the real villain mid-game, like Lysandre in Pokémon X and Y.
@Ninten-san I have said this before too. It seems they are still using the exact same engine and resolution of the DS.
Gamefreak is utter lazy with this and has been my biggest gripe with the Pokemon games on the 3DS.
When you compare it to for example Yo-kai Watch and how Sharp and vivid that game looks. Just oozes high Production quality.
I do love the Pokemon games, just really dissapointed in the utter laziness of Gamefreak. /shrug
Oh look, Cubone's dead mother got her own form.
I'm waiting for the english trailer. I just wish they would stop announcing new Pokemon. I want them to leave some surprises for us to discover ourselves in game.
@Ninten-san Lysandre didn't join Team Flare mid-game. He created Team Flare you just figured it out later.
@Jeronan Two games are not comparable at all. Also the most of animations and Pokemon seem to have decent quality, it's just the cutscenes that lack the quality.
@Pokefanmum82 I know, right? ;_; I already have a full team made up in my mind!.. I mean these reveals are basically spoilers I'm trying not to see any leaks or unwanted reveals, but official reveals are too much on their own Q_Q
The simplicity of Morelull and Pyukumuku reminds me of gen 1 and 2. I'm really happy with the new poke.
The only weak ones are the drugged dragon, dragqueen fish and the castle family.
Just look at Morelull fighting Pinsir! Looks like both are from the same generation, so good!
And YEAH! The last 2 trailers were so good that I can't wait for the new Poke!!!
I love that fungus Pokémon the Team Rocket team didn't really do anything for me, but they had to shove in an evil organisation I guess. I also couldn't read the text, but I doubt it would really improve my opinion
Pyukumuku may be my new favorite Pokemon name. It's the answer to the question - How do you say "puke my guts out" in Hawaiian after living a bit too large at the luau?".
I don't like Team Skull because they seem more like a local gang rather than a threatening or important organization trying to take over the world.... but the new Pokemon and Alola forms look great! (Except for Morelull, that one looks dumb.)
@Ninten-san Clearly they are pixelated to make them look edgey
As long as I can figure out how to get that Aloha version of Marowak, I'll be happy.
Well, so far for sure on my team, I wamt Rowlet and Cubone. A lot to choose from...
@Pokefanmum82 It probably is a hint to them going all out on number of Pokés this gen of they are revealing this many beforehand. :3
I really like how the Alolan Raichu has blue eyes, just like the surfing Pikachu from the first season of the anime.
I wonder if Alola Raichu gets Levitate? It would make sense and seems probable considering it's airsurfing on its tail and it being a Electric/Psychic type now as quite a few Psychic types have access to Levitate already.
My first Pokemon game was Ruby (GBA) but just recently I got Pokemon Y. I hope I like it.
I wonder if some older Pokemon will get a new looking and or new elemental. So far, i'm interested with Sawk a lot than other Pokemon. I can't imagine if Sawk, Karate Pokemon will have different looking...
@NinjaSyao Its ability is confirmed to be Surge Surfer, a new ability that doubles speed in Electric Terrain. Tapu Koko + Alolan Raichu is going to make a terrifying combination.
Heh, you know you can't have a Pokémon game without an evil organization to be taken down by a 10 year-old.
I love that surfing raichu.
The Team Skull guys remind me of the inklings from Splatoon for some reason.
@LegendOfPokemon I think it's ok that we have lower stakes considering last game had the Nazis.
I' getting kind of scared that we won't get any new megas.
Cue Tumblr freaking about about Team Skull being "coded" in 3... 2...
I know it's cool (in theory) to have the bad guys be a sinister organisation with wide-ranging and philosophically complex pretensions, but...
I quite like the simpler approach of having a group that feel immediately threatening and aggressive rather than stuck up and aloof.
I mean, I hope they can give them a slightly more sinister a motive than "we're Team Skull and we're really 'orrible" - but it's nice to have a visceral menace back in the series again.
Especially as Team Flare just came across as a bunch of over-manicured, pretentious drips who were about as intimidating as a bunch of used teabags.
I find it more compelling to imagine that the Big Bad Teams recruit through preying on the desperations of the disaffected and the outcast - of which there are many - rather than by sticking up flyers in university debating societies looking for uppity ideologues. I found it difficult to believe that so many pretentious ginger people could actually exist in one place, let alone get coordinated enough to form a credible organisation...
So a thumbs up for Team Skull (I think), and the other additions are interesting too. Especially the fact that Alolan forms don't run through entire evolutionary lines.
Alolan Raichu is the cutest thing ever. I'm going to name it Kawaiichu.
Alolan Raichu's eyes scare me.
Interesting to see that there isn't an Alolan Cubone, but that a normal one evolves into Alolan Marowak.
Not gonna lie... Kinda wanted a mega Raichu, Not a fairy one.
Checks calendar ....Nope, it's only August. T_T This is probably the most that I've ever looked forward to my brother's birthday.
Team Skull is fine. I'd personally just like a return to the superior character writing in Black and White. And maybe different difficulty settings.
I love how the Team actually looks intimidating this time. They look like street punks, instead of weirdos wearing bright red suits.
Also, all of these new ghost Pokémon we're getting! I'm definitely not complaining.
@Pants98 Honestly, I think there won't be new Megas thanks to all of the new Alolan forms, but it is possible that Mega Evolution is possible in the game using the new Z-Ring.
Team Skull reminds me of Inklings that wear the skull bandanas.
I thought starfish pushed there stomachs out to grab prey? Didn't know sea cucumbers did it too.
The Alola raichu is clearly descended from that one surfer dude's Pikachu in the cartoon.
The fish is interesting.
I'll reserve judgement on the new mushroom Pokemon, but it sure is cute!
@Gamecubed
That's because you can purchase a skull mask bandana in the shops. It could also be how they move around, a kind of wanna be late 90s gangsta thing.
I like the trailer team skull looks cool and more fun the flare.
the new pokemon are great but the fish looks boring
I give this trailer a 8/10
I have one bone to pick about team skull when the battle start they should use punk rock
@UberMadman Just saw the awesome news, here's hoping we get more automatic Electric Terrain setters for competitive play as I very much doubt Tapu Koko will be legal considering its a Legendary.
Gen 7 is looking veryyyy interesting with all the new stuff its bringing to the table ^_^
Another trailer looking nice, as always.
Frankly, new villains would come across as more intimidating if they were depicted as stomping the leftovers from the villain organizations that were in the previous game during the opener.
