Nowadays, Nintendo technically has two Super Mario RPG franchises. There's the quirky Mario & Luigi series on its portable platforms, and there's the Paper Mario games which are mostly for home consoles. Of course, Paper Mario has seemingly been shifting away from its RPG roots with its more recent entries, going for a weird, puzzle-focused RPG-ish experience, but it still counts, kind of. At any rate, it was all started back on the Super Nintendo with Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
Many fans will no doubt be pleased to hear, then, that Super Mario RPG will be arriving on the North American Wii U eShop this week. After arriving on the European eShop about six months ago, we deduced that it's still just as good today as it was back in the 90's. The interactive battle system and witty writing haven't aged a day, and it can be yours for about eight bucks (or cheaper, if you already had it on Wii VC).
What do you think? How does this game compare to its spiritual successors? Will you be picking this up? Drop us a comment in the section below.

Yes, finally!
Geno for Smash 5!
I would have preferred the 3DS, I was already able to play this on the Wii U.
I'd much rather have it on the 3DS to be honest.
I'd buy this right away if I hadn't JUST started Paper Mario.
This will likely be my next VC purchase.
I'm not sure if I'd consider the Paper Mario series to be an RPG franchise nowadays. By definition, I guess it technically is since you're playing as a fictional character on a journey... but going off of traditional RPG standards, I'd say no. Sticker Star may have featured turn-based battles, but it had no XP system, leveling up, story, or interesting characters. Hell, it wasn't even open-world. And from what I have seen from Color Splash, I don't believe there is any of that either (I could be mistaken).
Even Nintendo thinks it's an action/adventure series now. We can thank Bill Trinen (or whoever wrote the script) for that.
At this point, I'm not really willing to get SNES games on Wii U when they might eventually come to New 3DS instead.
@Ralizah
I'd rather they'd release more NES and Gameboy VC (still waiting on Castlevania Legends and Double Dragon 3) or else make SNES VC available to a wider more profitable audience.
I'd be a lot more interested if it were on the N3DS or better yet - featered cross buy.
It's my second overall favorite Mario RPG, right behind Paper Mario 64. I'm glad this is coming to the US at last, but I'd much rather play this on my New 3DS.
@wiggleronacid Color Splash has implemented an XP-like system, which has you collecting special Hammer pickups from defeated enemies to fill up a gauge next to your Paint Gauge, and upon filling that gauge up the Max Paint Capacity will be permanently increased. You can also gain Enemy Cards from defeated enemies, acting like automated partners that slightly act like the partners from the first two games in the series.
So therefore, Color Splash is adding some incentive to battles, whereas Sticker Star only gave you Coins and Stickers.
Paper Mario hasn't been an RPG series for two generations now. Keep up, Nintendo Life
I'm excited! I can finally play this game
@GameOtaku Nah, I want more New 3DS SNES releases.
I just picked up my save file on Paper Mario last week where I was ~ halfway thru the game and just managed to beat it Monday evening so this is pretty great timing for me
I've been waiting for this day even since I redeemed the game on Wii from Club Nintendo. It finally came.
Now for Square Enix to bring their other SNES treasures to Wii U for everyone, and not just Japan.
Nice! I never did beat this game, to be honest. I purchased it from Club Nintendo and downloaded it to the Wii Menu of my Wii U an eternity ago, despite not having a Wii Classic Controller to play it with, that way I could upgrade to the Wii U version for a reduced price once it released.
I did this with a bunch of Wii VC games like 3 years ago and thought it was a smart investment at the time. Little did I know we'd be so far along into the Wii U's life cycle and still have such a small VC library. I still have yet to see the likes of Mario Kart 64 and Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U eShop.
Played it on Wii VC and enjoyed it. I may throw in the few bucks to play it on Wii U.
Sure, I'll pick this up on Wii U for $1.50, but I'd rather play it on N3DS.
I'm very happy to see everyone saying they'd rather see this on N3DS VC. Add me to the list-- I'd eat this up if I could play it on the go. Well, in any case I'm glad it's got enough attention to be released at all. I'm crossing my fingers for a N3DS version though! Day one buy!
Finally.
I still remember downloading this to my Wii on Labour Day of 2008. Or was it 2009? Can't remember honestly. Good times either way, and I did secure a physical copy too for SNES. I upgraded the battery to a holder before I started playing, and made it to the last area in the game and put it away for a year or two, before realizing the pad for my replacement battery holder was broke. A dab of solder will fix it, but not bring back my save file.
I wonder if input lag is going to be a problem, which is kind of a make-or-break thing for this game.
This and the Monster Hunter demo are two great things! I'll just have the crossover fee. Though like many on here, this game is especially perfect for 3DS VC. I also agree that we need more NES and Gameboy on 3DS. Just a few more games, and some Konami and Square Enix love. I've begged for Ghost Babel, CV Legends, Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy Legend Trilogy and FF Adventure till I can beg no longer. Gone are the Club Nintendo surveys where I wrote those requests every time.
I really hope that demo comes out today. However, I'm playing Final Fantasy Explorers because I'm still mad I didn't get a demo code. I finally caved in when I saw the opportunity to get the game for $15. Take that, Capcom. Hehehe... Kidding. I don't need a demo for Generations, when the actual game is in my iron sights for my birthday this month. Now if my fiance can bake me a Monster Hunter cake.
@burninmylight Why would there be lag?
Guess I'm too eager. It became June 30th a few minutes ago (12:04am PST), and here I am checking the eShop.
@MitchVogel
I've read reports of people experiencing input lag with the Wii U VC version of some VC games, namely Paper Mario 64. I never played the original SNES version of Super Mario RPG so I can't compare it with that, but I feel like the Wii VC version may have a bit of input lag as well. I eventually got better at it, but I never felt like a completely got the timing down on it with action commands.
@StephenYap3 That sounds interesting and I'm glad to see they're giving an incentive to fight. I watched some of the gameplay tour for the game but not all of it, so I guess I missed that part. I can't say I'm impressed by this game, but I'm glad to see they are fixing one of the major issues with Stick Star. Thanks for the info!
@Ralizah It should really be on both at the same time with crossbuy. Sadly though I don't think even NX will have a crossbuy system, to play SMB on NX for example you having to pay like $10 even if you owned it on Wii, Wii U or 3DS.
@burninmylight I've heard talk of that, too, though I'm not sure I'd ever give it much weight. I've never noticed input lag for any games I've played on VC so far. Perhaps the original releases were a bit quicker, though, I usually buy games that I never played initially. Regardless, I don't think it's enough to impact the experience in a meaningful way.
Why is this not on the 3ds virtual console?! And why no original Paper Mario either?!
The interactive battle system and witty writing haven't aged a day, and it can be yours for about eight bucks (or cheaper, if you already had it on Wii VC).
Not exactly, we are purchasing the license to play the game, not purchasing the game itself.
It's a me..mario ! .. well not really, but you get the gist
WOW! What a way to wake up! First, the new Pokemon leak, the Bioshock: Collection leak, and now this!
FINALLY! I got this on Club Nintendo so I could upgrade to a Wii U version at some point! It seems that day has come!
Woohoo! One of my all time favorites. Glad to be able to upgrade.
Have wanted to play it since it came out. I was a Sega fan and didn't jump back to the Big N until the 64, so this has been a long time coming.
@Knuckles Keep in mind that Geno, despite being a character in the Mario universe, is actually a property of Square Enix! This is why we got a Geno Mii Fighter costume directly after Cloud was introduced into the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U roster.
The only Mario RPG worth talking about. I'm just annoyed with Nintendo on the delay of releasing this on the VC in North America.
@wiggleronacid No problem. As much as I personally liked Sticker Star (but not as much as the first two), that and the cryptic puzzles were a few of the undeniable issues I had with it. Color Splash seems to be addressing to the former (though not in a way anybody expected), so...at least this is worth more than just "Whoopie, we getz da coinz and stickerz! Yeeeyyy!!"
As for the cryptic puzzles...I am hoping that this time, we get actual clues on what Thing Cards to use in opportune areas, whether it be through an NPC or Huey (the "Kersti" of this game). Unless if you're looking up walkthroughs or watching Let's Plays, Sticker Star barely had any clues on which (Thing) Sticker a player should use in certain areas or boss fights and because of that, it was more of a "Do it yourself" thing for you to figure out. Applying the wrong sticker to the spot will result in you losing it, which I hope Color Splash addresses.
I'll be buying it and paying only a $1.50.
I'll admit I've always had a fascination for the game, I just never had the chance to give it a try. The plot was a welcome change or pace and the designs weres simple yet memorable, so who knows, maybe I'll give it a try.
Going to wait and hopefully this comes to 3DS so I can play it there instead
Time to upgrade to Wii U.
now all we need is Mario rpg seven stars and superstar saga for 3ds virtual console and ill be complete
This is good, but would have liked to see them put this game on the 3DS VC, I wouldn't mind having this one on the go.
I've literally been waiting years for Super Mario RPG to be released on the Wii U VC (I held out on purchasing it on the Wii).
Can't wait to play it!
Never played it. Is it fun?
@Hamster_Overlord your hamster is just too cute!
@Tempestryke thanks. I originally changed it as a joke, but I may keep it afterall!
Was waiting to upgrade on this. But I would totally buy it for 3DS if it was available. Even after Nintendo's ridiculous no cross-buy or discounts tied to an NNID for the same game
@HopeNForever I don't think Geno stands a chance to make it in as an actual character to the roster. Can't make the Smash 4 joke though, so Geno for Smash 5!
@The_Top_Loader no it's it's me Maria
@Alucard83 Maria Mario has a nice ring to it
