Level-5 is currently gearing up for its Vision 2016 event on 27th July, during which it'll show off new titles that are on the way. It'll be worth following closely, too, based on details shared by CEO Akihiro Hino in a preview stream.
He confirmed that a new Inazuma Eleven game will be shown, which is unsurprising considering the series' success in Japan. It sounds like a return to series origins, with a simpler tale of youths playing football / soccer and less intergalactic foes and time travelling.
Most pleasing, though, is the confirmation that a new Professor Layton game will be unveiled. It's being described as a 'legitimate' entry in the series, by which we expect a mix of impressive storytelling, humour and fiendish puzzles. It won't be Layton 7, in other words, which looked like an experimental release for mobile and some gaming hardware that rather quietly disappeared from view.
The new Layton will naturally have a different main character (not Alfendi Layton, apparently), and some of the early concept art looks rather charming as it shows off a typically Layton-esque portrayal of London.
The rather brilliant and emotional final entry to feature Professor Layton himself was Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy. It'll be interesting to see what's in store with the next full entry, and hopefully Nintendo hardware will be on the agenda; the original six games (plus Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney as a seventh) were all on DS and 3DS, after all.
Are you excited about the planned return of the Professor Layton series?
With thanks to Doctor Overbuild for the heads up.

I love the Layton games, so I'm hyped for this already
Whoa, what?! I thought the series had ended! Glad I was wrong!
I love and own ask the Layton games, even the one with Phoenix, and the movie as well. I'm stoked by this news and look forward to release and eventual US release.
New LAYTON & INAZUMA??? Two of the best game series of all time. HYPED!!!!!!
I'd love to see a new game with Alfendi.
And still waiting for Fantasy Life 2...
I've just started getting into the Layton series and am smacking myself for not playing them sooner. I've just started on Diabolical Box, and so far I'm enjoying it immensely.
More Yo-Kai Watch news of any sort is also welcome!
3ds?
New 3ds?
Nx?
Professor Layton, the Call of Duty of the DS/3DS/iOS:
Professor Layton and the Curious Village (DS, 2008)
Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box (DS, 2009)
Professor Layton and the Unwound Future (DS, 2010)
Professor Layton and the Last Specter (DS, 2011)
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask (3DS, 2012)
Layton Brothers: Mystery Room (iOS, 2013)
Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy (3DS, 2014)
Professor Layton VS Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney (3DS, 2014)
Well I guess skipping one year does make this one a bit exciting.
I...
I can't believe it.
One of my favorite series in gaming. They said it was done for, but NO! This is amazing!
I'm just so excited!
Not getting my hopes up until they confirm this isn't another mobile release.
@retro_player_22
Hey the IOS Layton really doesn't count. It's a mobile spinoff.
Also I need to get back to the Layton games....I kinda stopped midway through miracle mask...
A new Inazuma Eleven?
Can't wait to hear more about it!
Sure, GO had some terrible problems (and no, I'm not talking of the crazy-plot, I'm all for that nonsense XD) and we never got the final chapter here, but I would really love some more Inazuma Eleven in the west!
I love the series, but prequel trilogy to me was the weakest of the series. Plotwise, Unwouned Future was the best.
I can barely remember Spectre and Azran Legacy(other than annoying running out of ideas for puzzles), I liked Mask the most from those 3.
Still, can't wait for the new one, although I hope Hershel will be main and death of va won't stop them.
I honestly have never played a Layton game. This does remind me that I do own Miracle Mask, though. I picked it up a while back on a clearance rack for less than ten bucks. It's the only 3DS game on my shelf I haven't actually played through. I honestly just forgot I owned it. Now I know what game I'm playing next!
Woo hooooo, I hope it's a sequel to Unwound future (chronological) and I'm game for a new Puzzle solving detective/professor
The Professor Layton games are one of my favorite series of all time, only behind Zelda... I can't wait to hear the first details of this new game!
I'm sorry, did I miss the part where pre-released video game information was centrally stored in the bottom floor of Fort Knox? Seriously, you'd think he just stole official documents on the Lunar Hoax the way he took those pictures...
Also:
Because Super Monkey Blitz Ball: Dry Land Cup wasn't over the top enough for them? How do you save the world with Soccer?! I don't care if your whole team has super Kicking powers, at some point, you start making Yu-Gi-Oh! come off as narratively sound in comparison...
Finally, Prof. Layton is one of my favorite franchises. I do hope for a Layton x Phoenix Wright 2, too, someday!
Maybe a teenage/adult Luke could be the main protagonist?
i thought the puzzle master of professor layton had died? i wonder if he worked on this.
Gosh I hope Luke is the protagonist and he has a whiny assistant to help out. Then he'll know how Professor Layton felt.
A game with London and a British professor will not sell in the rest of Europe now I think...
Excited, I miss Layton, but also disappointed Hershel will not return, he's one of my favorite characters!
Great - love these games. I have one of the earlier Inazuma games but haven't ever played it.....must give it a go.
Wait, how can the series continue without their puzzle master Akira Tago?
I love Layton titles, they're really unique games. Perfect art, music, story, cutscenes and gameplay. I sold my 3DS about a year ago, so I'm hoping it comes to smartphones too... =)
Still no word about The Snack World... if they don't talk about it at this occasion, it means the 3DS game has been cancelled.
A little word for the West saying they want to localize further the Danball Senki series is an impossible dream.
A new less exagerated Inazuma focusing on football and kids? Were'nt both previous series starting exactly like that with their first episodes?
If that means we have to say goodbye to the Dragon Ball/manga techniques, to Jojo's Stands andSaint Seiya's clothes... I'm against it. They should add something new, not removing.
So a new professor layton without professor layton?
Didnt they say the series is leaving 3DS? I hope this is an exception :/
@Rei "Announced"? You mean they confirmed IE GO 3 for Europe? O.O
I sincerely never heard anything about the final GO chapter coming to Europe, so, after so long, I kinda gave up and assumed it was never going to get here.
Nice quality would like too see a Professor Layton on a home console.
@wiggleronacid I highly recommend you at LEAST play specters call first. Miracle mask is a sequel to it!
Maybe it's something with Luke as the protagonist? I mean, at the end of Unwound Future Luke moves to another place and writes a letter to Layton about strange things happening there.. It could have been a hint to the Last Spectre, but maybe they'll go on from Unwound Future?
I couldn't care less about Inazuma Eleven. But that new Layton sounds good! I currently only have Pandora's Box, though I want to pick up vs Phoenix Wright sometime in the future. Who knows, maybe this could be the title to really draw me in.
So it seems Layton 7 has been cancelled, and we get a new, proper professor Layton! Good news, I love the series. I really hope that the game comes to 3DS, but I am not entirely sure since they are drifting more and more to mobile. However, there are still the Yokai games and Snack world, so it isn't entirely over yet (the 3DS endeavour).
As for Inazuma: It IS surprising, seeing as the tv series has ended. Unless there is also a new tv series coming, wich isn't unlikely. A new tv series, I am looking forward to that!
As for Layton: Is nobody thinking of a prequel series, with a student Layton? Of course he had already some adventures back then, he's Layton after all!
Since the real professor who conceptualized most of the original puzzles had passed away, I hope they could find someone good to replace him...
I agree!
Now if we could just get a proper Fantasy Life sequel on 3DS
Aw, I can't wait for what is going to be revealed. ^_^ I know that the Professor Hershal Layton story is over, so I'm keen to know what direction they'll take now. I really hope it does come to Nintendo systems because lately we haven't had much luck. :x
@Pluto14 specter is a prequel that takes place before the first game in the series. 3 years from what I can remember. Mask and Azran make it prequel trilogy.
The letter could be just them leaving the possibility for sequels and not burn the bridges behind them just in case
OMG yes!!! hopefully a 3DS and not mobile release.
hoping it will be on the 3DS. I miss the series. Still have to finish azran legacy though.
@BakaKnight Upps, sorry, I did not check the information. Some stupid french page had started a rumour a few month ago as it seems: a new Inazuma game was supposed to be announced in june and the third GO (whose name is registered since a year ago in Europe) european release was supposed to be officialized this summer.
@Henmii The new TV series is in preparation along the new videogame (the one who should take place around the first generation).
I have been praying for a Layton game on the Wii U, It would be a no brainer to release it on both Wii U and 3DS. Please make this happen.
I've never understood why there was no Pr. Layton HD Trilogy remake for Wii U. Just use upscaled assets, put 1,2 and 3 in one box and you had a wii u systemseller at launch! I'm sure that game even exists somewherr in a vault and they just never thought it was a good time to release it. Think about it, the first 3 make PERFECT sense on Wii U, and it wouod finally allow for the beautiful art and asset of these game to come to full glorry on the big screen!
@Rei Thanks for raising my hopes only for crushing them again T.T;
Still that rumour is not wrong so far, so there is still hope we will get some news; althought I can't avoid to see it unlikely, the popularity of IE dropped in the last year, surely they were plan to release the last GO games, but it's hard to believe they didn't change mind >.>;
"It won't be Layton 7, in other words, which looked like an experimental release for mobile and some gaming hardware that rather quietly disappeared from view."
?
@shadowmouse09 why wii U? can I ask as to why?
@LemonSlice NX handheld?
@Olivierke uhh, why not 3ds? like Phoenix wright?
@RupeeClock New direction. No puzzles, 100% hidden object game.
@Rei,
Good news!
Reads the Headline : Ok, cool, a new Layton game.
Reads Inazuma Eleven : Flails arms in excitement, dropping 3DS
I liked the last Inazuma Eleven game. I actually watched the anime a lot more than it was interesting enough to watch just because I enjoyed the game.
