Some might claim that it's too little, too late, but Minecraft is available on Wii U and is getting some pretty amazing exclusive content, too.
The Super Mario skin pack recently went live and is free to download for anyone who owns the game already. It's also going to be bundled with the physical release of the game.
You might assume that it was Nintendo who approached Mojang and porting company 4J - cap in hand - with the idea of mixing Mario and Minecraft, but Nintendo's senior manager of licensing Damon Baker has revealed it was the opposite:
They actually came to us with what their vision was, and the extent of it, and blew us away. It still went through an official approval process through our art department at our head office in Japan, but it was really driven by them as the creative studios behind it.
While other Minecraft skin packs have been shared across multiple versions of the game, Baker - perhaps unsurprisingly - states that there are currently no plans to release the Mario pack on other consoles.

I really love the pack, but I wish it was a little more particular about when it plays what music. Boo's Haunt music is weird in the overworld during day. Bob-omb Battlefield is awesome though!
"There are currently no plans to release the Mario pack on other consoles."
Of course not. It isn't even considered, because its attracting a few more to get a Wii U, but also more people to buy MC on Wii U.
Minecraft is getting a lot of traction theses days, and bring it to the wiiu is a good thing a least.
It was my idea.
I also originally thought of mixing chocolate with cheese & onion crisps as a child. Then lo and behold many years later it became a product.
I thought I invented pop tarts but turns out they were around long, long before I was born. Though they made a late appearance in Europe.
It'd be cool if Nintendo did something nice back. Like, after a couple of years, give this content to Xbone users.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I knew I'd heard it here first!!
We're never going to get a 3DS version are we
My only complaint with this pack is the music gets very repetitive after you've played for hours. I use the pack for everything now because of how nice and colourful it makes the blocks look so I hear the music A LOT.
@Moon Seems not but hey we got Terraria on there.
@gardevoir7 You forgot to mention the more faithful Minecraft clones are also available for the Nintendo 3DS, such as Cube Creator 3D and Battleminer.
This is another cool thing that leaves a bad taste in my mouth, since Nintendo is using the presence of their characters to place copyright claims on Minecraft vids on YouTube -.-
Other consoles have the same chance of getting this as bayonetta 2
@TeslaChippie I think Nintendo isn't doing it on purpose. YouTube has a process of automatically scanning for content that infringes, which saves them time but ultimately causes more headaches.
Just recently family guy had an episode where they played a NES game from footage they found on YouTube, and because of the episode, YouTube turned around and flagged the original NES video from years back!
The whole process is frustrating but keep the hope! We will be soon experieNXing brighter days. 👾😸👾
So glad they did this. The texture pack and Adventure Map are fantastic. Exploring all the different nooks and crannys of the world seriously blew me away - 4J Studios/Mojang did a phenomenal job.
this is what Nintendo needed like 4 years ago...
@SLIGEACH_EIRE - the chocolate cheese and onion has to be the most disturbing thing I've EVER seen on the internet.........that will haunt me the rest of my days
Wait you mean Miyamoto WASN'T behind this? I'm shocked and surprised after all the new characters and ideas he's given us in the past few years.
Of course it wasn't their idea. It's kind of why they are i nthe position they are in any more within the market and the industry as a whole.
But even better: "It still went through an official approval process through our art department at our head office in Japan," is also why it was so "delayed" in a sense and took as long as it did to debut. The idea was pitched back in 2014. 2014!
I think the fate of the Wii U would have been different if this came out early in the product lifecycle. IMO, the NX will need some sort of killer app early on too, or it will be the same thing, just different year.
@Gerbwmu I know it sounds weird and awful. But try it some time, you'll be pleasantly surprised. It's really nice.
REALLY surprised to see Nintendo agreeing to crossover with Mojang and Microsoft considering they treat their IPs and characters as sacred beings.
@Freeon-Leon that's gonna happen when the halo Mashup pack comes to nintendo consoles, which is never.
@Freeon-Leon I'd say something like "keep dreaming" but that might be seen as rude. Instead, how about a nice Hawaiian Punch?
@bherdm Exactly this. How the hell is Jolly Roger Bay NOT a music track?!
@Donutman @rockodoodle
As good as Minecraft is, and as big as it is, it's not "what it needed 4 years ago" and it wouldn't have changed its fate.
It would've sold like crazy, sure, to people who already own a Wii U. And maybe a couple people would go buy one for it, but that's it. The Vita got Minecraft when all the other consoles did, and it sold great and is still selling great today. But it did nothing to save the Vita. And it's not like the franchise has gotten any less popular over the last four years.
Really disappointing that Nintendo didn't make this happen. I wonder if they were even pushing to get Minecraft or if 4J Studios came to them too. Nintendo really is clueless. Man, I hope the NX is something good to help turn around their fortunes.
Good God Nintendo.
You couldn't even think of this on your own? Seriously? Nintendo seriously needs to get their head back into the game.
Saw some videos of the pack on YouTube, it looks very cool, and much, much more elaborate than I'd have expected.
Still, I've never played Minecraft and don't think I ever will. I just don't get the appeal, at all. It looks awkward and weird as heck to me, not fun at all. But I'm glad Nintendo finally got in on this, a NX version is now inevitable I think, and we'll probably be seeing other packs on it too, such as Zelda and possibly Metroid.
@TeslaChippie What Nintendo is doing with claiming these MC videos is illegal, by the way. They still do it and get away with it, though.
@ianolivia Nintendo isn't actually doing anything in this particular situation....
Its YouTube's trash automated claims system... The whole damn thing needs to be thrown into a fire, its been blatantly obvious since its introduction that its completey broken
