Star Fox is a series renowned for various tropes and memorable moments, perhaps none more so than the first time we heard Peppy Hare tell us against our better judgement to spin our Arwing around in a manner he referred to as a barrel roll.
The developers working on Star Fox Zero apparently could't resist throwing in further reference to this global obsession on one of the game's later missions. Check out the video below where you can see this little Easter egg in action.

DO A BARREL ROLL!!!
This is the only instance of "driving to meme country" that I approve of.
BARREL ROLL!!
Haha! I'm glad you can play other characters other than Fox. That's a nice twist.
I approve of this 100%.
I love me a good meme
So I wonder who else get's their own mission in the game besides Peppy.
@Wendigo don't we all
AILERON ROLL! AILERON ROLL!
Doesn't sound as fun, but at least it's accurate.
and now I must own this game
Reminds me of Krillin from DBZ Abridged
Haha. That gave me a good, quality chuckle. It's even funnier to imagine Champ from Anchorman as the voice of Peppy. BARREL ROLL!! WHAHAHAAAAAAMMMYYY!!
For all those people opposed to voice acting in video games, particularly the Zelda Zealots, imagine how famous "do a barrel roll" would be if it wasn't vouced. I'm thinking not at all.
Was "all your are base belong to us" voiced the first time? That's the only written meme I can think of, but I also hear it voiced in my head, which I think is unlikely way back when. But if it was voiced, there ya go.
For those looking for a good voiced game, which I don't think I'll hope for on NX - FFXV, Madden and FIFA are already pushing it - go watch the Mafia 3 trailer. The music makes it great, but the voice acting is still top notch.
I have several friends who'll exploit that just to be annoying. And I'm the first one in line!
@rjejr You know what wasn't voiced?
IT'S DANGEROUS TO GO ALONE, TAKE THIS
Zelda doesn't need voice acting, never has, and "it'll create deh dank memes" is really scraping the bottom of the barrel (roll) when it comes to arguments. I wouldn't mind it if it was an option, but at the same time, it would likely result in less dialogue overall( and consequentially, less sidequests) as well as cause there to be a MUCH longer wait between the Japanese version of the game and the EU/US release. That's really my main issue with it.
The ultimate drug
@Undead_terror Somehow your avatar gif makes this 20 times better XD
...But will we get to play Falco?
@rjejr "It's dangerous to go alone! Take this!" - from Zelda
"I am Error." - from Zelda
"Praise the sun!" - messages left all over Dark Souls
"The cake is a lie!" - written all over the 'secret' areas outside the lab in Portal.
"Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the president?" - Bad Dudes
"I like shorts, they're comfortable and easy to wear!" - a random kid in Pokémon
"Y can't a Metroid crawl?" - not a game but the first Miiverse meme (Miime?)
There's a whole bunch! And I'm not against voice acting in general, but there's a time and a place, I certainly don't consider it a necessity. Often time it can detract from a game more than add to it when either it or the lip synch is off, or when it takes longer to say the line than read it. It has to be done really well if at all, I quite enjoyed the Kid Icarus Rising running commentary. But I am rather fond of the old gibberish noises and don't want to see them go away completely.
@FlappyFalco @Ogbert
The only one I know out of all of those is "The cake is a lie." from Portal. And do you know why that's famous? The funky computer voice acting, that's why. And Portal 2 had a lot of voice acting. Good voice acting at that. (I'm a big JK Simmons fan.)

The internet would never shut up if Shrek got into SSB.
@NinjaAceTrainer No they would not.
thanks for the cringe treehouse
Haha this makes it the best mission in the game
@rjejr "The cake is a lie" wasn't spoken though. It was written by a character you never met or saw called the ratman. The line was never read by a character, certainly not it's silent protagonist, I don't think it was in the sequel either. Which is my point as I was replying to your comment about "do a barrel roll" only being a meme because it was spoken and the only one you could think of not comin from spoken word was "all your base". So the voice acting has nothing to do with it, it couldn't if it was never spoken.
So yeah Portal has voice acting, excellent voice acting! Not the point, I did say when done well it's great (and cited an example of Nintendo doing it well in Kid Icarus Uprising)! But it's biggest meme came from a line that was never spoken. Portal 2 had a few Cave Johnson lines that were brief memes but nothing of the level as "the cake is a lie".
And I still enjoy the gibberish noises. If Zero gives the option to turn out voice acting in favour of the gibberish I'll 100% be doing that! Not all games need it, it's not indicative of a better game. Some might, some games are made better by it, but not all. Whether Zelda is one of those games I would rather leave to the devs to decide.
That's awesome! If I ever play this game, I know I won't take that mission seriously! XD
It's Wednesday my dudes. Do a barrel roll
Yeah memes in our games. Nintendo is really getting on with the times.
Silly Peppy, that's an aileron roll you've just made!
@rjejr Praise the sun is only ever expressed by the mute player character and it's a BIG deal!
@EverythingAmiibo RE: Praise the sun.
Never heard (read) it, but for some reason it made me think of this. I really have no idea why, but somehow it fits.
@Ogbert Man I hate gibberish. Anything that sounds like Okami - which the druggie in the back alley of Splatoon did - just freaks me out. Though somehow it worked for wacked out Okami as I just tried to pretend it was Japanese.
But Zelda is Nintnedo's big open world adventure game. Since Nintendo consoles tend not to get Tomb Raider, Skyrim, Uncharted, Witcher or Fallout, that pretty much leaves it to Zelda to be THE open world adventure game. And in 2016 that means voice acting. Also meant it in 2011, 2012, and basically since 2002 or so. Maybe 2008.
I don't think handheld Zelda games need it, not ALBW or HW or TFH, most handhelds aren't hooked up to expensive 5.1 surround sound systems. And if NX is a hybrid w/ a portable I'm ok w/ no voice acting on the handheld part, cuts down on file size. But I think Zelda should be the flagship home console game, and as such it should be voice acted. Wii U doesn't get a lot o fJRPG games from Squenix, but Nintnod was smart enough to buy Monolith, and XC and XCX are fully voice acted and are done so well. OK Tatsuo sucks. But while Monolith gives them XC and XCX, they really dont' have a Witcher 3 or Skyrim or Fallout 4. Zelda should be the tent pole game for NX, and I don't see how you have a tent pole game w/o voice acting.
NSMBNX doesn't need voice acting. Nor does amiibo Kingdom or Ntinedo Land 2 or whatever family friendly kid game Ntineod decides to launch alongside NX. But Zelda should have it to make that dramatic impact at E3.
KI:U is so funny b/c its the best voice acted game Nitnod has made, possibly ever outside of the 2 Monolith games, yet it's a handheld. That game would be so awesome in HD and surround sound. Instead we gt AC:aF.
@rjejr Tatsu is wayyyy better than Riki
It's actually amazing how popular and well-known that meme has become, I mean freaking google but a reference to it in GOOGLE itself (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=do+a+barrel+roll)
That level looks exactly like the Rogue Squadron II level where you attack the Motivator above Kothlis.
@NinjaAceTrainer Shrek is life...
DO AN AILERON ROLL!
Lol!
@rjejr The Wii U already has a big open world adventure game in "Xenoblade Chronicles X," and it got by with a mostly silent protagonist. I can see them providing voice acting for the side characters, but I think Link at least should remain mute.
@xPH03N1Xx86 Heropon Riki is flabbergasted at your comment.
@BulbasaurusRex "but I think Link at least should remain mute."
I've always believed that. For one, Link never says anything, all he ever does is shake his head yes. OK, that's partly a joke, but he's never been a great philosopher, he's a pawn in a great war, he always just obediently does what he's told.
Also, the Zelda fans would loose it. Big time. They might seriously revolt and not buy it at that point.
But the rest, well it's not 1997 anymore. Or even 2007. This just looks so lame in 2016. If you are already paying people to grunt and giggle, let them speak. The narrator has a nice voice.

OMG, you fight a Star Destroyer in this game? I can't wait
At least this meme is in context in the series it originated from.
