Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE is going to be a fascinating arrival in the West on 24th June. Sure, it's been fun following its release in Japan and saying "jeez that looks crazy", but now we'll have to make sense of it. Or, well, try to.
This intriguing cross of Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem is colourful and has music at its core, and its Western marketing seems to be kicking into gear. Not long after stating that Atlus has handled the localisation of the game, Nintendo of America has unleashed its 'First Beats Trailer'.
It's in English, but we're still not sure what's going on. Chrom looks bad-ass though.
It still looks interesting and weird. Are you looking forward to playing it in the Summer?

At first this game just confused me but the more i see and learn about the unique gameplay mechanics and sessions...plus ive heard the game gets darker as you progress now im actually excited for it to release! fingers crossed that i'll be able to preorder the special edition
Great game. Youll just have to play the game to understand it
Not quite as excited for this as I am for P5, but seeing as this will most likely release first, it's still almost certainly an 0-day for me.
I just hope we will see another homeconsole FE as well ... as I really miss the days of PoR and RD =(
Yeah, but what's the frame rate?
I need something to supplement my hunger for Persona 5. This will do nicely.
@WanderingPB
It's been up for preorder at GameStop online for a full day now. The Fortissimo Edition that is.
Having some English in there does help me make more sense out of things than I could before. Yay localization!
It looks wonderful, plus all of the import reviews call it a great RPG! So this one is a must buy.
I'm not trashing the game. It just looks.... different. I just don't see how this pertains to either series. I've played a couple fire emblems and although I haven't played any Shin Megami tensei I've seen some gameplay videos and none had anything to do with the whole premise of this. I just really don't understand what is going on with this. When you cross two games over I would think you'd get something from a little of both in a similar playstyle. It's pretty interesting but also nerve wrecking. I dunno. I'll give it a try.
anyone else see the triforce in there??!!! O_O
Definitely getting this game.
I think the sad japanese pop music sold it for me.
Wii U exclusive. Achingly Nintendo. It's a preorder for sure.
This game keeps looking more hype every time I see it. Does slightly suck there will be no dub since there are a ton of talented VA's who can really sing in the west. I do understand since having to translate each song properly can be very tricky considering how different Japanese is from English. Also the new English lyrics line up with the already recorded music would be a pain and hard not to sound odd and much easier to just subtitle them. Plus the cast is top notch already so those who do not mind subtitles will greatly enjoy this one.
Waiting for the Special Edition to go up on Amazon. Screw GameStop; not paying them full price ever again.
@Zoda_Fett Check out gameplay videos of Persona 3 and 4. What we have here with TMS#FE is visually MUCH closer to those two games than mainline SMT.
Also, keep in mind that many abilities/spells carry over between SMT games so even without the look, battles play out roughly similar.
If Japan did Eurovision....

I find the amount of focus the music has in the trailers to be off-putting. Originally, I was thinking this was going to be a combination of both rhythm games and JRPG, mixed with a large helping of Fire Emblem, and I didn't like the sound of that.
If they want people like me to buy this, then I think they need to release trailers that clearly shows the gameplay footage, such as the flow of a battle and some dungeon exploration, with less cut-scenes of singing and dancing.. That way, nobody would be able to instantly dismiss this as the weird Japanese Fire Emblem singing game.
I watched quite a bit of gameplay and import reviews.
The game is looking fantastic. And definitely one of Atlus' higher budget JRPG's too.
Thomas said a bad word!
@crimsontadpoles
There is an hour long video of gameplay, from last year's E3 if I'm not mistaken. It shows the gameplay and the first dungeon if you are interested.
Plus, I'd recommend checking out some of the import impressions (neogaf, serenes forest). They analize the gameplay, It weaknesses and strenghts.
Hope it helps!
@Josue58423
I suggest you use the contact form next time, and use far less profanity.
Keep it up and you'll be banned.
This is gonna be so cool. Can't wait for it to hit.
@JaxonH thank you for the heads up my friend i managed to preorder it from gamestop. also i dont know if u heard but the Fire emblem if 8 disc soundtrack is up for preorder in playasia if ur interested it might be my favorite of the series but still not sure cuz Awakenings sdtk was also incredible
@WanderingPB
Yup- already have the soundtrack preordered. But through Amazon JP where it's much cheaper than PlayAsia. Always try to go through Amazon.co.jp when possible. Cheapest prices and allows cancellations.
EDIT
I actually ordered the Awakening soundtrack, Fates soundtrack and #FE soundtrack together from Amazon JP. Think it was like $125 total for all 3, shipping included.
@JaxonH I presume you pre-ordered 2 copies for your fire emblem shelf . I can't wait for this game! I've Never played Shin Megami Tensei but if I enjoy ( I probably will) I'll be sure to check the series out! Bring on the game and it's limited edition in the UK!
I'm going to buy this game and regret it, show disappointment, cringe, laugh, and have tons of fun all at the same time. What a strange game.
@JaxonH WHAT?!?! is there a guide to sign up to amazon jp or can i use my regular amazon account?...wow i feel so ripped off right now
Looks cool, but somehow I don't find myself playing a ton of JRPG style games on the wii U lately. 3DS seems to be more the go-to, so I can grind on the bus rather than sitting down in a dedicated grinding chair. Here's hoping a portable counterpart comes along.
@DoctorOverbuild
I certainly did I love Persona, and I liked SMTIV but I never played much of it. My bro on the other hand, swears it's the best game on 3DS and he's mainly a PS gamer of the Bloodborne/Dark Souls variety.
@WanderingPB
You've always been able to order products from Amazon JP, with certain restrictions for certain categories. But recently they changed their policy and almost everything ships overseas now. You just need to create an account, link payment and you're set. Just like you would for your local Amazon site.
There is also a forwarding company called Tenso you can use to have items that won't ship overseas sent to their warehouse, then forwarded to you for little more than it would cost for international shipping. Free to sign up. Just save the address they provide In your Amazon JP account in case there ever happens to be something that can't ship (like amiibo).
@WanderingPB
And I would just go to their site in Google Chrome browser and use Google Translate to help you set up an account.

That page should be in English. Now go up top to where you see SIGN IN and click that, then on username/pass screen there's a button below SIGN IN that says CREATE YOUR AMAZON ACCOUNT
Certainly excited for this one. Gonna be my birthday present to myself alongside No Man's Sky as it's my birthday three days after release.
I know people aren't going to like this but, I wish there was English VO
Why shaking hands using their left hand?
@DefHalan Why would someone not like your opinion about having English voice acting? I want it too and much prefer it to subtitles.
It'll be a treat to get a game from Atlus that retains the original voice acting.
The game looks mostly solid. Not sure about some of the singing bits, but we'll see where it goes.
@Browny It could end up being Gamestop exclusive. Here in Ireland it was for SFZ: FPE. Had to pay them €65 for Star Fox Zero: First Print Edition, while in the UK they charged the equivalent of €55. Another reason to despise them. And to top it off my steelbook is damaged so I've to wait for a response about getting a replacement. As a result I haven't unwrapped either of the games. Oh Gamestop, how I loathe thee!
Preordered the SE yesterday. I'm getting a Digimonstory Cyber Sleuth vibe (which was heavily influenced by Persona 4) - so optimistic and unabashedly "Japanese". I cannot wait!
The game looks rad to me. Despite the extremely different route it took by being inspired from both series, but resembling neither, it looks really interesting. Love the fact that it retains JP voices since I prefer video games to be as close as possible to their Japanese equivalent, albeit subtitled.
I don't really mind the music, sounds awesome to me. I have generally heard positive comments about the game, especially the amazing turn-based combat.
@DefHalan Boo...
jk. I think it's obvious that wasn't in the budget, but their justification is pretty sound - it's set in Japan.
This is without a doubt a Shin Megami Tensei game first and foremost, with characters from the Fire Emblem series added to the mix. And for Fire Emblem fans or people who have never tried and SMT game this may initially be a huge turn off. But trust me, SMT games are some of the best JRPG's ever made (SMT4, Persona 3 and Persona 4 Golden to name just three) so I for one am hugely excited for TMS.
@LasermasterA Totally agree. Despite it's origins, it's not a stretch to consider this a new IP and a very fresh and exciting one at that. Some people are really hung up on the 'bait and switch' but it's not like SMT4:A and P5 aren't right around the corner so a fresh take should really be more welcome.
I'm really pleased we're getting the Japanese. maybe I'm old fashioned but. I can't stand English VO in Japanese titles and RPG dialogue tends to be particularly cloying. Hell, I turned Assassin's Creed II to Italian! (So much better).
@Spiders I will sadly probably have to skip this game now. I have way too big of a backlog for this. With English VO, it would have been easier for me to play
@Spiders
Yea going with something fresh is definitely great. I have really gotten used to this idea and am excited for this game. It will come out during my holidays so I can buy it day one as well I loved all the Atlus games myself, and this doesn't look to be an exception.
Atlus usually has excellent English but I still love that I will get to play this in Japanese. I wouldn't have minded if there was a dual audio option for other people, but too bad it wasn't in their budget.
Hopefully nothing gets censored since Nintendo is still the publisher and calling the shots, despite them saying Atlus is handling localization.
@Wexter its probably down to the facts that this didn't do too well in japan (atlus was expect a lot more sales) and the Xenoblade X didn't do awesome in the west.
Atlus and Nintendo are expecting this to be super niche when it launches for us lot and subbing saves a lot of money.
good news though it dosent have to do as well subbed as it would dubbed to be deems a success.
Personally, I wish English was at least an option. The battle banter is useless if you don't know what they are saying and I'm sure plot and detail will be lost no matter how weird it is. Plus I wish this was a traditional FE game. Lol!
Amazon keeps teasing me with the Japanese version of the SE, with it being readily available and practically the same price as an unused copy of the normal package.
@JaxonH Thanks alot i read a blog that walked me through the process. I can't believe i didnt learn about it sooner. Also i dont know where u live but amazon in the usa has the Awakening sdtk for $35 w/ prime shipping so theres no need for u to import that one if u live in the usa. Thanks again for the heads up my wallet will me much lighter now LOL!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
The press release said it would be available through Amazon as well. I'll wait a bit longer, but I would rather get a normal edition over paying GameStop for a special edition.
@BrightBeing
I don't want to annoy you... But the game that fulfills all that is Fire Emblem Fates
@DefHalan If it ends up being really good I'll just read it to you haha
@Spiders as long as you do different voices for each character
@Luna_110 Not on a home console.
I WANT to like this game, but every time I watch a trailer I want to play it less and less...
@Tsurii I dunno, with Virtual Console and indie eshop titles they do add up. If we're just counting mechanics and not strict nationality, I've yet to even crack Citizens of Earth. Same goes for the other home consoles and the PC. JRPGs tend to work best on handheld platforms because they require little commitment or preparation for a session of grinding.
This looks so good. I am double hyped for this.
Really does look like a blast.
I will definitely be getting this!
