Aqua Moto Racing Utopia seems to have been in our 'Upcoming Releases' list for a little too long, having been originally revealed in February 2014 for the Wii U eShop. As a HD follow-up to Aqua Moto Racing 3D we naturally thought "oh boy, it could be the next best thing to a new Wave Race", and we cling to that hope to this very day.
Originally announced for Wii U, it's now also coming to the PS4 - unsurprisingly it's the latter version that's shown off in a new video released for GDC by developer Zordix. The new footage shows off a first-person camera perspective and two new course areas - Eastern Canals and Tropical Islands.

The developer still specifies the Wii U for a release in addition to PS4; it's not coming off our Upcoming Releases list yet. Check it out below.

We have Fast Racing NEO as a fill for the void of F-Zero games for Nintendo consoles, and now we have this game also as a fill for the void of Wave Race games for Nintendo consoles.
This game looks great, I ain't gonna lie.
This isn't going to be another Projects Cars situation is it where we get promised a Wii U version for the longest time and then... it gets dropped with some poor excuse that angers many people
I'm so desperate for a follow-up to Blue Storm that I'll basically buy anything in this genre as long as the frame rate holds up.
This certainly looks pretty good. I have Wave Race 64, but don't remember liking it very much. Maybe I'll give it another shot to see if I'll want to buy this game too.
If the price is right I'll buy it
All we need now is a decent snowboarding game to fill in for 1080.
This has water wave physics. Promising.
Hope Nintendo picks up "Wave Race" (and "Pilotwings for that matter) for NX reboot. This one looks ace, mind.
The physics here seem really off. The beauty off wave race was the way the crafts reacted to the water. Here it just looks like there sliding along Tarmac. Still looks fun but not a replacement for Waverace.
@OneArmedGiant
I was actually just noticing how there aren't many waves. That was what made Wave Race fun- tricking off the waves and catching air constantly.
I'd love this to be good but the 3DS one never reviewed well. It's on IOS too,so this is probably just an expanded version of that.Hope I'm wrong!
Although 20 years later I prefer the water in wave race. In this it looks a bit flat although the graphics are nice.
I would buy that.
NICE! Excited about this, definitely my genre. Sadly I will probably get it for the PS4 (i know i know..), unless there is Pro Controller support on the WiiU. The ergonomics of the Wii U gamepad has always left me seriously unfulfilled, but the Pro Controller I LOVE. There's a similar game on the PS4 that's pretty good (a bit hard though)... Riptide GP 2.. Has good music as well. On that note, I need to get back into Fast Neo 2.. Did they patch it to make it any less ridiculous difficult!?! I miss the days of game genie codes
Hype meter reset to 0.000
Expectations lowered.
Impending WiiU cancellation anticipated.
an HD
@RobNYC1977 The difficulty was intentional. That said, the "January" patch that was meant to prevent the very common crashes online has not come out yet.
Looks fun.
Now I need to go check out the PSN game to see what that looked like, if I can find it, deleted it a couple of HDD wipes ago. Can't recall the name but it came with a theme. And a world map that locked out half the game for me.
Woah! Serious physics issues there. No weight to the water crafts at all. Limited connection to being in water. Waverace still rules and has never been bettered!
@Grumblevolcano
I figured as much. It's funny because that studio's other game, Beach Buggy Racing (the second game I purchased on PS4) is just as insanely difficult. And it's a kart racing game :/ I think i'm hitting that age though where games get really difficult due to diminishing, well, everything. (along with learning anything new!)
I actually panic sometimes thinking how in 30-40-50 years I won't be able to enjoy classic video games because or arthritis or something lol. :/
Is that Wii Fit female trainer?? The horror.
As a Wave Race fan, I have to check those physics and animations. I don't see the drivers leaning properly nor natural reaction of the jet ski to the waves.
That said, Nintendo keeps on ignoring F-Zero and Wave Race fans.
If Nintendo threw a bone to the Wii U owners with an F-Zero game I will purchase an NX on day one. The two Mario Kart levels were cool in their own right, but I personally didn't feel like they captured the F-Zero miasma at all.
@Harmunt Amen! same thing i was thinking, This is nothing like Wave race... Wave race has the best physics. Also, were are the waves? Very little waves shown, Wave race 64 looks more impress gameplay wise from what i have seen so far...
Customer: Nintendo? is this Wave Race for Wii U!?
Nintendo: No.
Customer: aren't you going to make one than?
Nintendo: No.
Customer: are you sure?
Nintendo: Hangs Up
Customer: oh well, no money for Nintendo, i'll just buy this one.
This is my first time seeing the game, and I must say, it looks pretty nice. I could see the "perfect/great" text that seems to appear every time you go around a buoy as getting pretty obnoxious after a while, though. Also, some of the textures, like those on the ramp seen toward the end, could use a bit of polish to make them look more realistic. Those nitpicks aside, this might be a game worth my attention.
@FragRed The hardware being too weak to handle it was a poor excuse? If anything, project cars should have been an eye opener to the people defending the Wii U's power/potential
This is certainly not a 49.99 Wave Race with amazing waves and water physics. This is probably a 11.99 Wave Race with less amazing waves and water physics. Could still be good fun.
Indies do what Nintendon't. First we get a pseudo-F-Zero type game now a pseudo-Wave Race, what next, a pseudo-Pilotwings? A pseudo- 1080? I mean I'm not complaining, but it makes me wish Nintendo would man up and do it themselves.
@ikki5 TBH for me it was an eye opener showing the developer at Sligltly Mad Studios are a fraud and big liars.
Water and vehicle physics looks a little meh. Guess I'll keep playing wave race. I wish Nintendo would give the arcade sports games one more try. 1080 and Wave race on the wiiu would be gorgeous.
Just bought a pair of component cables for my gamecube so have been playing a lot of blue storm. such a classic. we need a new wave race this will not do.
Is it me or does it only mention PS4 at the end?
You'd think that a small developer would include all planned platforms in one trailer to save money. The lack of a Wii U logo at the end is pretty ominous, in my eyes.
@Kuhang Developers can only do what the Hardware will allow them. Yeah it sucks that they could only get like 20ish fps but regardless what they did, they would have gotten hell from Nintendo fans because it was either delay the game to the next Nintendo system and hope Nintendo actually puts some power in it or totally strip the game down to be able to run or just have it run like crap. Either way, Nintendo fans would have trashed them.
Yay it's (effectively) the new Wave Race I've been waiting for since GC!
@hendie001 Agreed. We need a new Wave Race but I've long given up hope.
Even if we do get one it'll probably be a shallow attempt like Pilotwings on 3DS was seeing as that's how Nintendo like to develop games these days.
This is definitely better than nothing.
All the people whining about Waverace64:
People...OMG...give it up, that game was decades ago and those types of games don't get made by big studios anymore.
Now, take a deep breath and look at the footage of this game: It looks good, and it looks FUN.
Stop whining about F-Zero and Waverace - which are games that if Nintendo rebooted you would HATE anyway, and be happy studios like Shi'nen and Zordix are making modern, HD versions of these games.
@KrakenSoup Indies do what big studios don't.
Extreme sports and snowboarding/watercaft games were big in the 90s, but now these games are made by smaller studios.
The last time we saw something like this was the extremely disappointing reboot of Tony Hawk Pro Skater.
Please people: Stop pretending it's 1996...while I admit the music was much better back then, the video game industry has moved on.
Nothing beats the physics of waverace64, tested any water physics game that excist. I'm very curious what they make out of this, im willing to buy a ps4.5 if its good enough
Are you sure this is PS4 footage? Agree with the numerous comments re physics and the rider and jet ski models looked quite rough!
@datamonkey I wonder how blue storm sold. People always talk about wave race 64 but blue storm kind of gets forgotten about. I have the Gameboy version of wave race and love it. its very simple but a great game.
