A little while back, it was heavily teased that The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth would be coming to Wii U. The massive expansion to the randomly generated roguelike was originally expected to skip Nintendo platforms, but it sermed that the developers evidently had changed their minds with the Wii U, though a New 3DS version was a bit more doubtful. Now, the final console lineup has been revealed, and the Wii U is fortunately among them.
Tyrone Rodriguez recently made the announcement via a series of tweets. He mentions how the game has been submitted for approval on the various consoles, with an expected release being sometime next month in both North America and Europe. In terms of how these versions will compare to the PC edition, the Daily Run will share the same seed between console and PC, but leaderboards won't be shared due to issues with the different first parties.

Oh, so now the Wii U is powerful enough?
And what about New 3DS owners? Just nothing? That's it? I've been waiting for The Binding of Isaac especially for 3DS, and I can't play AfterBirth because of my interest in portable gaming? F$%&@ng perfect!!
Oh, now the Wii U is somehow now powerful to run the game? How interesting.
You know, I want to see what those people who defended the developer back then have to say now.
Still won't get it rated for release in Australia...
Glad to see it coming to Wii U, let's hope it doesn't soft lock my console.
Love playing afterbirth on the PC.
I got my fix with the 3ds game so this is a pass for me.
Yeah, probably getting it, though I don't appreciate Nicalis as a company...
This works out great. I ended up getting Isaac on Wii U, because I didn't want to wait until I got a New 3DS to get the game. Once I upgraded and bought the game again, the Wii U version was pretty useless. With Afterbirth, now both versions will give me reasons to play, each with their own pros and cons.
Is gonna be dlc,standalone,or both?
It's really sad they could not get the New 3DS version updated with it. Still, Wii U owners who are on the fence about it and would not mind the thematic content should pick it up without a second thought.
I really like Isaac Rebirth, I got it last month on Wii U and I'm still playing it. Is Afterbirth worth it if you already own Rebirth? From what I've seen it's more like an upgrade and less like a sequel.
@SKTTR You need Rebirth as it is DLC to that game and if you liked that it's probably worth it as it adds a ton of additional content including a new mode and two new characters. The absurdity of the new synergies are my personal selling point.
@Spoony_Tech What did you think if it? I've been considering getting it the past few weeks but with this on the way I'm glad I waited.
@BlackHeart: I'm curious because it sounds like a stand-alone game.
So, if it's DLC for Rebirth on Wii U there should be an update coming to Rebirth soon, adding the DLC functionality, and hopefully fixing the crashing issue (doesn't happen often, but still happens sometimes).
If it's a stand-alone release I hope you can transfer your save file from Rebirth to Afterbirth, and get a discount if you already own Rebirth.
@SKTTR It's been DLC on the PC so it should be the same here but considering nobody seems to point out it is DLC I can understand the confusion.
They haven't said anything about an Update yet but it likely will come soon enough for the reason you mentioned. And several others after release probably.
Yessss. I was worried about afterbirth not making it over to Wii U, glad they managed to squeeze out enough power from the system.
@UboaNoticedYou Same here, hopefully they patch out most of the random crashes in this version. I've counted about 10 times the game locked up in my experience, luckily the game saves often. Still an inexcusable amount of bugs in the port as of now.
Yaaaaarrrssssss.....!!!!
Wow, I guess the last Nintendo Network Maintenance added "MORE POWER" to the console!
I'm not supporting this game.
@Megumi
HA. Took the words out of my mouth.
Sounds to me like the crap back then was a quick excuse not to bother with porting, but now they probably want onto the NX bandwagon or something.
Anyway, good news.
@Megumi More like now the first Isaac sold well on WiiU, it's now magically powerful enough to run the sequel. It's always a matter of market. The developer of this game is a big drama queen.
Tbh, even if I was interested in the game I wouldn't wanna support those kind of developers :/
AUS and Nz release anytime soon? Guys? Please?
Tyrone never said the Wii U isn't capable of running this DLC folks >.> He only said the odds aren't too good with an admittedly absurd tweet.
They still tried though and posted a gif (actually vine, whoops) showing significant progress in form of a stress test shortly after said tweet but nobody cared because evil Tyrone said something stupid. https://twitter.com/tyronerodriguez/status/669329353126334464 That's just eight days after the apparently infamous article here had been posted. https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/11/poor_odds_of_the_binding_of_isaac_afterbirth_coming_to_wii_u_as_nicalis_says_its_not_much_more_powerful_than_a_ps_vita
Remember, it's not the graphics that are the problem with this expansion/DLC but the new synergies that potentially allow you to have 128 large dynamic lasers on the screen at the same time (that's the maximum on the PC too) which all have their own shadows/lights and behavior due to being dynamic. That puts a lot of stress on the CPU and it's not even factoring in the moves of the new Final Bosses.
How much less fun would this game be if you couldn't use those absurd synergies because the system doesn't run well?
Call me a fangirl if you want, I don't care, but please don't exaggerate everything like that.
Tyrone does react very immature sometimes so I can at least understand some contempt towards him.
It would be nice if this post would be edited to mention it's a DLC though as there seem to be a lot of misunderstandings.
If they get Afterbirth on 3DS then I'll buy the game, but without the DLC, I'll pass.
The binding of Isaac is coming to Wii U.
I feel like I've read this story so many times before, couldn't care less, rather rebuy and replay Super Meat Boy again.
@OorWullie I enjoyed it for the time I could give it. What I like about it most was no matter how you played it it was a different experience every time. It's a definite recommend!
@Vee_Flames Oh dear. Did you Wii U get offended by his comment that it isn't very powerful?
Is it okay?
This looks great. Looking forward to it.
It will release with glitches like everything else from Nicalis does; this time the glitches will freeze your system and cause data to be erased.
It will release with glitches like everything else from Nicalis does; this time the glitches will freeze your system and cause data to be erased. And punch your dog.
@Dakt nope
@Vandy ok dont lol no one gives a f*ck dude. Keep being a fanboy just because NICALIS called it how it was, Wii U is an underpowered system.
@BigBabyPeach Developers that continue to work on a port when it doesn't look good and when the community is twisting their words? Sounds like good devs to me
EDIT: Yeah he's a drama queen, but you would only know that if youre specifically an Isaac fan.
I'll get it but did they ever patch the main game on Wii U. I still had stuff to do and got fed up with the not common but always horribly timed freezes.
No, don't freeze on the first stage, always wait till I am almost done an awesome run that will unlock something. ****!
@BlackHeart I saw your post in that infamous article and you made some pretty good points! I guess they managed to make it through after all? I'm expecting to either corners to be cut or just have crashes happening which apparently made the original on Wiiu CRASH if the CPU problems you mentioned come to a head? Heh, Unless technical wizardry has been done...
We got the power to run it, NINTENDO POWER!....now to get some of that Nintendo power on our 3DS's to get it...
I love this game. I've spent countless hours playing it. I will definitely pick up Afterbirth!
@Captain_Toad I can only hope they managed to bring out as much as they could without limiting you guys too much. My biggest fear hear is that they toned down the tear limit (like from 128 to 64 which is still overkill in most cases).
I don't have a Wii U and I can only speak from my PS4 experience which never crashed during normal gamplay. Only when I absolutely broke the game did it happen which was still much saner than anything possible in Afterbirth (again, 128 dynamic lasers).
But yeah, I really hope you guys can eventually enjoy as much of it as possible.
But hey, Epic Fetus + Brimstone in Afterbirth isn't very demanding and ridiculously strong
Yes! I finally have a reason to get this game now
Although I find it it bit weird that they now changed their minds.
I don't like it when a developer makes a false lie.
Finally he decided to put effort into his programming instead of just depending on shear power.
Considering Rebirth was so buggy for 3DS and Wii U, and they didn't know if they'd even be able to put Afterbirth on Wii U, I'm expecting a ton of problems when this releases.
Glad to see it coming to Wii U, but there is no excuse why it can't come to new 3ds too, the game isn't exactly graphically demanding -_-
I've played The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth for hundreds of hours and love it but this expansion is low quality, overpriced, and just doesn't add much good content.
I really wanted to get Rebirth on my New 3DS, but now with Afterbirth coming out only on the Wii U, I'm wondering if I should opt for the Wii U version instead. Do you think there's a chance they could get the New 3DS to run Afterbirth?
@happylittlepigs Sadly most likely impossible. The CPU of the New 3DS isn't nearly strong enough to handle the new features reliably which are heavily demanding.
With Greed Mode many more things can happen at the same time due to many more enemies spawning. Each of them have their seperate calculations in their AI, come with their own shadows, possibly lights and their own attacks. And that's not including your own new attacks and synergies.
Basically hundreds, if not thousands, of things have to calculated per second, that's just too much.
Does anyone know if the wiiU binding of isaac rebirth data will transfer to afterbirth? I unlocked alot of stuff and don't want to lose it.
