We've said it many times already, but Super Mario Maker truly is the game that keeps on giving.
On 9th March a free software update will add a Super Expert mode to the 100-Mario Challenge; it's unlocked after players clear Expert mode. Super Expert Mode dishes out six extremely tough courses - additionally, 12 new Mystery Mushroom costumes have been added to 100 Mario Challenge.
The update also provides level creators with even more tools:
- Shake a P Switch to turn it into a key. Shake a Door to turn it into a Key Door. Creators can make enemies hold keys, meaning players can't advance without defeating mandatory bosses.
- Shake a Coin to turn it into a Pink Coin. Players must collect them all to make a key appear.
- Shake a Thwomp to turn it into a massive Skewer column from Super Mario World.
- Additionally, the Super Mario Maker Bookmark site will see additions such as ranking categories for world records and the number of first clears on courses, inspiring new ways to experience the main game.
During today's Nintendo Direct broadcast, Nintendo also revealed that more than 6.2 million courses have been created by the community. That's a staggering achievement which goes to show how much fun players are having creating levels.

Seem like they are all stellar additions that will certainly make people make more unique levels.
Something I doubt people will complain about, at least.
Great additions to the game! ...But still no slopes.
There is a super-Expert mode. Expert mode can get some breathing room again. Heh, obviously thats the highlight for me in this direct.
Until they introduce slopes, I won't be creating any more stages of my own. I just feel too limited without slopes. Yes I know people can make amazing stages even without them, but I don't have such a creative mind sadly.
Regardless, this is another good and, I think, much-needed update. At least the keys being added.
pretty good. I wouldn't expect the kitchen sink, since Nintendo does not want ppl to be able to literally recreate the next 2d Mario game; they want ppl to buy the next 2d game. Slopes would be nice, though. I look at it like SMM is its own game, since a lot of stuff in there can not be done in other games, represented in SMM. So, to me, the lack of curtain things isn't the end; It's just a little disappointing certain things are lacking. Still, I appreciate what's there. I feel the costumes should be used in other themes, aside from SMB, but that's another story.
Is it just a key that the pink coins will give you once you collect all of them or can you make the pink coins reward you with something else?
The key feature is huge for me. I have wanted to include a boss battle with Bowser Jr for ages on the one course I'm creating. So glad that I can now make this mandatory to progressing through the level.
@majinx07 Sounds like it's just keys.
The key would be from SMB2. I think the pink(I see red) coins only give a key.
A few very welcome additions to the game but far from a "major" update. It was a very disappointing Direct as expected bar this news and the new Paper Mario game.
i fear the levels that shall come now.
@Captain_Toad so do you think that the inclusion of "super-expert" will make the expert mode easier? Like the ridiculously hard levels will be there instead?
@Icarus423 Son, if you been playing or at least been watching expert mode runs in this game. You will know that some expert courses will become TOO expert for some people. So yes this will make expert mode easier. It's a godsend.
These are welcome additions and the red coin and key ideas will help to make even more diverse level experiences. This was definitely a highlight from tonight's direct for me.
Seems cool, but I am STILL DEMANDING FOR SLOPES!!
Just do it!
@Captain_Toad Oh I'm aware, I think I may have finished like 8 expert levels at most.
Sounds good, thank you Nintendo.
Slopes, more music selection, level themes (above ground water), power ups, bosses, are some things on my wishlist.but this update will be awesome! Thx
These are simple, but very useful additions. There's so many creative uses people can use these new things for.
Oh my oh my oh my YES best news - coupled with the SNES Virtual Console on New 3DS - of the Direct, hands down.
Keys! Spike pillars! Red coins! MANDATORY BOSSES!
Super Mario Maker is raising the bar for Mario game standards. I doubt Nintendo can get away with another New Super Mario Bros title without an editor coming with it.
Where are the slopes? I appreciate the update, but slopes are really needed.
Really? New update but STILL no slopes? Starting to think there won't be slopes at all, the SMM level in Smash got my hopes up for nothing. Maybe they just don't have the engine designed to support slanted surfaces and don't want to change it that heavily...
As for this update, it's great but my only concern will be stages people make where they hide a key in a random enemy you'd never expect and you spend forever looking for it... plus they limit the time so you pretty much need to go straight for the enemy, but you don't know which...
I get why people want slopes but keys and mandatory bosses are far more significant in the long run.
I was going to ask why on Earth they would want to add a Super Expert Mode when Expert Mode is already ridiculous, but @Captain_Toad's comment makes a valid point. Now I'm hyped.
Aside from that, the keys are the single most important thing they could have added.
The keys / pink coin are very interesting and could add a lot of variety to levels. And who doesn't love a nice Skewer?
I'm so excited for those updates! I've been wanting spike pillars ever since the game was announced, keys also. Now I'm just missing chargin' chucks.
They just breathed new life into this game, and with SIX MILLION courses from around the globe, that number's gonna DOUBLE by the time E3 gets here!
These additions are super exciting. Can't wait to try them out next week. For those who just play and don't create, it's just as great!
As a side note: Slopes may never happen in this game. It might be time to accept it and enjoy the much better improvements that have happened in the meantime. Just looking out for your own emotional wellness is all, folks!
Yes! New update!
Finally! Keys! I've been dying to have some keys and locked doors, and I'm so happy to hear Nintendo is going to support this game. If they added in new enemies, I'd pretty much explode at this point.
How many keys can be placed at a time?
We won't see slopes in this game, get over it already! It's inherent to the game's engine, how can you create a slope with blocks? probably there may be a workaround, but I don't think that it would be easy to implement.
I haven't played this game in months but all of these updates are making me want to dive right back in! The game just keeps getting better and better with each addition to the mechanics.
Is anyone else honestly and truthfully upset that people still keep bringing up slopes like it is the one thing that failed this game?
I would MUCH rather them add a bunch of other things. I even made up a list of things I would like.
Win conditions:
Collect Star Coins (passable with the Key Coins)
Key and Lock (passable with Key Doors)
Must defeat boss. (boss can drop Keys)
Collect 100 coins possibly with a Green Star Block SMW style
Themes: (DLC maybe? for creation tools I mean)
Desert
Beach (water placeable)
Snow
How about a way to link up several levels online?
It is just upsetting that all I ever see is 50% of chat saying SLOPES!!!11111!
Awesome. The key and key coins is precisely the kind of thing I wanted, and they're gonna open up numerous avenues for stage creating. Thumbs up from me.
Now, get to work on a way to actually let us link levels together and make worlds. Pretty please?
@LordGeovanni Oh yes, I definitely agree with you. Honestly, I couldn't really care less about slopes and don't see why people do.
Where's the Shovel Knight costume?!
@LordGeovanni I agree. There's a lot more missing than slopes.
Sweet. I'm still looking forward to getting the blue koopa shell from NSMB1. I love that thing.
I still want slopes and a chance to add water and lava anywhere. Also more backrounds like desert, snow, forest etc.
"Super Expert Mode dishes out six extremely tough courses"
Say hello to some Panga stages.
I really like this update.
"Super Expert Mode dishes out six extremely tough courses - additionally, 12 new Mystery Mushroom costumes have been added to 100 Mario Challenge"
Does this mean those 12 can only be unlocked by finishing Super expert mode?
