Spanish developer MercurySteam - which created the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow sub-series and produced Mirror of Fate for the 3DS - has revealed that it has reunited with Dave Cox, the former Konami producer who worked with the studio on those titles.
Cox enjoyed 17 years at Konami and rose to the role of studio head and producer at the company's UK office. He left in 2014 following the release of Lords of Shadow 2 on the PS3 and Xbox 360.
Both parties have announced that they are working on an as-yet-unnamed project. A teaser site has gone live for the game, which hints at more news in just under a month.
Here's what Cox had to say:
When I was approached by MercurySteam to get involved in their new project, I jumped at the chance. It's been my great fortune and pleasure to work with this talented studio over many years.
I'm extremely excited about this very ambitious work they're undertaking. MercurySteam continue to push boundaries and their sheer creative spirit always astounds me. It's great to be back with my old team mates.
MercurySteam studio head Enric Alvarez also seems pretty pleased:
Making games is a real passion for us and we enjoy tackling huge challenges. We've worked with Dave over many years and his passion and enthusiasm coupled with years of experience will give us a strong foundation for what will be our most ambitious undertaking as an independent studio.
We reported on a rumour not so long ago that MercurySteam was working on a speculative pitch for a new Metroid title. What do you think the studio is working on now, and are you excited to see the first details?

Reminds me more of fallout for some reason.
Curious as to what the title is though and how far it may have come from it's Metroid pitch.
If I remember correctly they've said this will be for PS4, X1, and PC. And if I don't remember correctly, let's be honest, it's for everything but Wii U.
@PanurgeJr I was just about to say I highly doubt this will come to anything Nintendo based, but now you've convinced me it won't be. That is unless it comes to the NX.
I don't suppose that "tackling huge challenges" means getting their "very ambitious work" onto the Wii U?
Didn't think so.
And that's certainly not the language third parties use when making 3DS games either lol
Thought it was Fallout for a second.
I would expect that whatever they're doing, it won't be on a Nintendo system.
A metroid game would be good from them! Another new Castlevania game for the newer system generation would also be good...it's been a while since a good castlevania adventure has been on a nintendo console (since N64 days...no adventure in Castlevania Judgement for Wii). Lords of Shadow have been terrific games, and I could only imagine what they could do with the next nintendo console, or even PS4...even a re-release of all of the games made in the series in HD would be fantastic!!!
Back to the Metroid game...it would also be nice to get a new one in the series for nintendo's next console...as long as it's not a first-person shooter.
Nothing MercurySteam has created has been particularly impressive or fun to play and their take on Castlevania was particularly disappointing. Although hopefully that will change, I'm not holding my breath.
Looks like a Fallout screen.
I hated the Castlevania for the 3DS. They destroyed the series. I hope someone else makes another one because I could not deal with that blasphemy.
I hope to hell it isn't Metroid. Mercurysteam drove the final stake in Castlevania as a series (plus Konami not doing anything of value lately), and Metroid is already on the tight rope, so let's not make it worse.
MercurySteam's track record with me personally is very mixed. On one hand the original Lords of Shadow was rather awesome! On the other the sequels were average at best and they botched a handheld Castlevania game.
Could be cool, could be terrible. Only time can tell.
The Lords of Shadow demo was awesome, but didn't feel like Castlevania at all. Mirror of Fate is absolute garbage. This game would have to pass with flying colors everywhere to even just grab my interest.
I must be one of the few people that think Castlevania Mirror of Fate is a spectacular masterpiece on the New 3DSXL.
The artwork and detail design in this game is incredible.
As I recall, even Nintendo were impressed by the effort.
Credit to MercurySteam and it talented staff.
Shitty studio. LoS wasn't that bad, but the studio itself don't deserve much respect for their hollow works.
@River3636 Castlevania for the GBA and DS was the best games on both platforms for me, i would love to see a new one for the 3DS!
