The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD is just a couple weeks away from release, marking the third consecutive console that the game will be released for. Naturally, this isn't going to be just the same game with a fresh coat of paint, but there will be some tweaks to the core gameplay to make it an overall tighter and more enjoyable experience.
One of the new improvements is a Poe Lantern item that will allow Link to find Poes in the daytime. Those of you that played the original will no doubt remember this somewhat tedious sidequest where Link could collect sixty Poe souls over the course of his adventure, with the caveat that they only appeared at night. 'Malo' has been running the official Zelda Twitter in Japan for the past few weeks and he recently shared a bit about this new item. Here's the quote, courtesy of Nintendo Everything:
…It's Malo. This is not a simple lantern… It's called the "Ghost Lantern", and it also detects the existence of Poes during day and will let you know about it…… so you can be like 'It's useless to hide yourself!' Time is money… so use it well.
What do you think? Are you glad that Nintendo has been making changes like this? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

How much more are they going to nerf TP? Accessibility is not always worth sacrificing difficulty especially when we're talking about an OPTIONAL side quest.
@MMLgamer This sidequest wasn't difficult; It was only tedious. I'm glad they made this change.
I agree, tedious doesn't equal difficult, looks like a good change to me.
Not like you could see them at night as wolf form. Just going to make this quest way faster to do if you hunt them on day.
I don't really like the other changes that have been made to the game, this is the 1st good tweak in my opinion, the others just make the game too easy.
STOP CHANGING THE GAME!! There was nothing wrong with waiting until night fall. Same with this unlimited purse thing that's unlocked with the amiibo. Thing is you need the biggest purse to get the infinity purse. By normally the Goron Tunnels am I running out of purse space
It would've been different if there were a way to control the flow of time like in OoT or Majora's Mask, but Twilight Princess never had that.
So this is kinda necessary.
Quietly this update crept in and changed us all.
Thank God. That was my least favorite part of Twilight Princess. I hated Poe hunting at night.
Excellent! :] Now if only they'd give us some kind of flute or whatever to call Epona whenever we like, instead of having to go and find some weird grass that you only happen across when you don't need it. :/
@Tsurii Yeah, you get that flute towards the end of the game. Very handy, having done the entire time without it. -_-'
And having that grass at the start of an area the size of Hyrule Field isn't exactly helpful -at all- if you're out exploring (which is what the game is mostly about, in the end). I didn't care you needed the grass for the hawk, because you hardly ever needed that animal, and even then the grass was always right there at the spot you needed it. Epona is used all the time. Ocarina of Time gave you Epona's Song right at the beginning, even before you could ride her, and TP has that flute... They just need to make it actually useful and give it to you early on especially given the size of the game and the need for a horse.
Can't remember it being a problem!
@CB85 It's a typical approach for games with large worlds like why you don't get a skell in XCX until after several tens of hours of walking by foot.
@Grumblevolcano True, but not really in this case, because they give you the grass to call Epona right away from the beginning, it's just that it's not readily available all the time, making it nonsensical. Like giving you access to Skells in XCX, but only at the start of every continent.
I don't particularly have a problem with this new item, but I think making an already easy game easier is an extremely poor area of focus for development.
They could have spent that time, I don't know, actually updating the jaggedy character models so Link's arm isn't a hexagon.
I don't even remember this part of the game, that's how long it's been since I played TP.
Looking forward to playing this in its original non mirrored form
I never had any problems with this!
Do we know how to get the lantern in game yet? As long as it's not just given to you at random, it's definitely a positive change.
Tedium =/= difficulty.
I support this 100%
The original sidequest could get so tedious at times.
A nice addition. If you don't like it, don't use it. I've found them all without before but it was a bit of a pain at times. I think I'll be using it this time myself.
There seems to be a big misunderstanding here. From what we've seen so far, the Ghost Lantern only tells you, where the Poes are during day. It doesn't make them appear during the day, you still have to wait for the night. It's actually a very useless addition to the game. I hope, I'm wrong about this, but I have yet to see this item make the Poes appear. It only shines...
And no, waiting for the night doesn't make the game more difficult. Was Ocarina of Time easier, because it had the Sun's Song? Some people...
@TourianTourist Hmm...well, I think it's based on this part of the tweet: "so you can be like 'It's useless to hide yourself!' Time is money… so use it well." If it's useless to hide themselves and time is money, that has to mean you can take care of the Poes without waiting around. I mean...this was my #1 greatest issue with TP and the one thing I always said NEEDED to be fixed in an HD rerelease, and I can't have been alone, so I think Nintendo knew well enough to do somethin about it, eh?
@Stuffgamer1 I know and I absolutely agree. I was also hoping for a way to either make the Poes appear during day or change the time of day. You can understand my disappointment, when I learned that this item does neither. It's like Nintendo acknowledged the issue with the Poes, but ultimately decided to not really change anything about it...
Three questions come to mind concerning the poe lantern:
#1 does it replace the original lantern once acquired?
#2 does it require fuel?
#3 does it light up the area as well as the original lantern?
I'm hoping the answers are yes - no - yes, in that order. XD
@TourianTourist If the Poe Lantern doesn't use fuel and still lights up areas as well as the original lantern, then it won't be a useless item.
@smashbrolink No, to all of these. It's a separate item, which doesn't replace the lantern, it doesn't require Lantern Oil, and it only makes a spooky light, if there are Poes around.
I don't think I even finished this side quest when I played through this on Wii. If I did, I don't remember getting that much for finishing it. Now that this sidequest will be a little less like a chore, maybe I'll finish it this time around.
@CB85 ah yes, the lucky charms grass. That was annoying to have to hunt around for.
@Bunkerneath @MMLgamer Are you saying you'd rather wait for nightfall to hunt for Poes? Because that's still possible. Nobody's forcing you to use the Poe Lantern. If you don't care for a new feature, just don't use it. Same goes for the bigger wallet, or tapping in any amiibo.
@allav866 Haha, exactly. I love when people complain about a developer offering the option for decreased difficulty as though they are being forced to use them. It's like saying a game is too easy because there was the option to choose "easy" at the beginning of the game, and you had to do it because it was there and you'd feel like a total moron if you didn't.
Poe lantern — good example of a thoughtful change that eliminates one of TP's few flaws, IMO.
I've never got all the Poe's,maybe I'll give it a try this time.
@TeslaChippie Sigh. Your impatience with a slow and optional part of the game does not translate to that element of the game being flawed. If an optional quest was too tedious, no one was forced to endure it, so making the change for casual players was completely pointless. If I'm complaining, it's because they made a change to the game which only removes an element of mystery and challenge to it. It's like if they made the fourth bottle in OoT only require 3 poes instead of 10 or if they added arrows in Braid pointing to the stars. "Well, everyone hated working so hard and for so long, so we made it more accessible for those who aren't dedicated gamers." Sidequests are meant for the dedicated, and they are supposed to test our patience, because traveling off the beaten path would not seem so rewarding if it was as easy as the rest of the game.
Excellent. That sidequest was tedious; waiting for it to be nighttime was sometimes boring.
I actually like hunting poes at night, but that's just me. It doesn't really apply to me anyway since I still have TP.
I didn't think it was that tedious. What I found annoying was keeping track of which poes I'd found. Since I started the Poe quest a bit late, the ones in the dungeons were the worst. All that backtracking for missing one!
That said, I think this is a fair update. I don't know if I'd use it, because I like grindy stuff like that. But I accept that I'm not the majority with that (I also wish they'd have added Tears of Light, rather than subtracted, so yeah).
I'm just going to point out to anyone complaining that they're making it too easy by adding the infinite wallet and poe lantern, you could just do this thing, it's called "not using them". The main premise is that you don't get or, if they're unavoidable, don't use them. It's the same as doing a 3 heart run; the heart containers are there if you want them, but if you feel the game is too easy, you can just not collect them. Same way you don't have to collect faries and buy potions, nor do you have to get the biggoron sword. You're essentially just going " How dare they make the game easier, if I choose to use these items." Do you alwauys play Mega Man on hard mode because you don't like that they made it easier for the international release, and think that they should have not added the easier difficulty setting so that they don't reach out to a wider audience (those that want the original experience/want a challenge, and those who just want to enjoy the game/might not be very good at the game)?
My point is, it's completely optional, you don't have to use them if you think it's too easy, but for people like me who are lazy and aren't very good at games, having an optional item to make the game easier/more enjoyable, it's quite nice. I still don't have to use it, and neither do you.
It's like FE Fates phoenix mode all over again: "How dare they try and reach a wider audience! How dare they try to help people enjoy their game! Games aren't meant to be fun!" That's genuinely what those people sound like to me. It doesn't make any sense.
"Time is money… so use it well." Does this mean it runs on rupees, like the Magic Armor does?
Pffffft casuals.
@Bunkerneath Then don't use the lantern and amiibo. Problem solved!!
No one is forcing you to use these changes. It's like complaining about that super silly "Easy mode" in some games.
@Bunkerneath How bad are you at words? That was just... It made a lot of nonsense.
@MMLgamer So I guess if a new item is added to the game that means you're forced to use it? In that case let me go stuff as many medals into my adventure pouch as possible in Skyward Sword.... not. It is possible to pretend it doesn't exist you know. And just because you don't like something that doesn't mean it's pointless. Seriously that was just stupid
@TheGoddesseshero I don't like it BECAUSE it's pointless, and I LOVE that you mentioned Skyward Sword, a game that was highly criticized for its pointless reminders.
As for pretending, doesn't that solve the problems of every single game ever. By your logic, every game is 10/10 because you can just pretend the game has substance. If you couldn't finish the game because of the difficulty, that would be one thing, but a side quest is another thing. If you can't finish a side quest, why not just pretend you did.
I don't expect that I speak for the masses who don't give a crap about the sparkly water in Majora's Mask 3D or the dancing gossip stones. I only hope the next Zelda doesn't follow suit.
@MMLgamer Way to miss the point buddy.
