Rhys Lewis might have "indie game developer" on his business card these days, but his career has been anything but small-scale. Lewis has held roles at Rare, Confounding Factor, 3D Realms and Retro Studios, and can list titles like Banjo-Kazooie, Duke Nukem Forever, Metroid Prime 3, Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze on his CV.
Earlier last year, it was reported that Lewis had left Retro - where he was employed as A.I. lead - to return to his native UK and set up his own company, Squarehead Studios. His first game was provisionally called Star Drift and was expected to launch solely on iOS, but Lewis has gotten in touch with us to reveal that it is headed to the Wii U eShop under the moniker Star Ghost.
A procedurally generated shoot-em-up "inspired by the arcade classics", Star Ghost uses the same control scheme developed by Lewis for the rocket-barrel sections of Donkey Kong Country Returns. To add an even stronger connection to his work at Rare and Retro, Lewis has enlisted the legendary video game composer David Wise to produce the music for the game. Wise was Rare's in-house musician for many years and recently worked with Retro on Tropical Freeze's soundtrack.
Take control of the Star Ghost and patrol the galaxy. Navigate the fragments of exploding planets, survive intense asteroid fields and dogfight deadly Sentinel ships in a desperate bid to defend Astron from the onslaught of the Metagon Empire.
Featuring:
* Dynamic level generation
* 12 beautifully rendered Star Systems
* Sound track by renowned composer, David Wise
* Simple, intuitive control system
* Off-TV play
Star Ghost hits the Wii U eShop on March 10th, and you can check out the trailer below.

Looks great! It reminds me of a modern Gradius. I love the humor of having his cat swing at the ship as it approaches (in the video). You can definitely tell that's a David Wise soundtrack.
I want to see more of it and I hope it speeds up because it looked a little too slow for my liking. However I am definitely interested in this game despite being generally crap at this genre.
A space shooter? Count me in!
Awesome, gimme.
Saw the trailer a few days ago, had no clue who was making the game but I was already looking forward to it, now even more so.
Wow, no comments yet... why not be the first?
Looks good, not great. That soundtrack, though.... 😆
I love the visuals, but I hated the rocket-barrel sections of Donkey Kong. Definite pass.
Hmm, this isn't really my kind of game, and while a David Wise soundtrack would usually get me to jump on a game, I dunno, I didn't really care for what I heard in the trailer. Just not my style I guess. That's what makes Wise great though, is that he can do a lot of different musical styles really well, and thus please lots of different audiences.
Very pretty, certainly worth a punt.
Maybe.......I haven't played a good side scrolling shoot em up in ages
Well...fudge. David Wise is doing the OST? Now I have to download!
I'm in
The action might look a little slow but remember it uses controls like the rocket barrel levels. Probably will be very difficult.
Looks like fun, I'll keep an eye on it.
Seriously...if I was to type what I was actually thinking I would have received a year ban on this website. Rough translation..."DAY ONE PURCHASE FOR ME! LOVE IT!!!!!"
I hate the rocket barrel levels and how they control...
Looks good. I'll keep my eye on this.
Yes. More shmups, please.?
Will buy for the soundtrack alone
I loved the rocket barrel levels in DKC. They required some real skill. Count me in, day 1 purchase. Probably.
Cute.
Easily right up my alley! I'm getting it!
Looks underwhelming.
I miss these type of games. I think I will get it.
I'm in!! Love when the indies do a retro style classic tribute!!! Lord knows Capcom, Konami, Sega etc etc are not! Day 1!!
What about Ghost Song????
Oooo, that's kinda neat!
Not sure I'm a fan of the control method being the same as the rocket barrel sections from DKTF, but hey, if you want a challenge then that's one way to get it in a shooter like this.
I'll look into it once it launches, if I've got the spare cash.^_^
Certainly better than anything EA has done for us lately...
Looks like an old school arcade game called Scramble.. and I LOVE that game!! DAY ONE BABY!!!
Looks like a fun game, i really enjoyed the Rocket Barrel levels and David Wise always kills it with the soundtrack. I'm sure i'll be picking this up
All I want is a traditional controller, to be on par with the Ps ooops sorry, wrong page... Hope it goes well!
Anybody else really skeptical about the concept of a procedurally made shmup? Guess I'll have to wait for reviews first to see what others think about it.
