Yesterday, we reported on the news that Undertale developer Toby Fox was open to the idea of his unique RPG coming to Nintendo systems, with the caveat that he'd need outside assistance to create the port.
Undertale - a critically-acclaimed PC release built entirely with Game Maker - would need to be re-written from scratch, and Fox admits he lacks the knowledge and programming skills to do this himself.
Almost as soon as the news went live, Chasing Aurora developer Broken Rules took to Twitter to offer its services:
As mentioned in the tweet, Broken Rules has a solid track record when it comes to Wii U ports - Guacamaelee, Blek and Electronic Super Joy have all been released on the console thanks to its efforts.
Fox has yet to comment on the offer, but we'll keep you updated on the situation.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

o/ yay
The only thing I would be interested to see in the port is how they handle the forced crashes. The things like remembering your previous playthroughs would be easy enough. Although erasing the memory of a genocide playthough would be a lot easier than on PC.
Considering its roots in Mother/Earthbound, I'm sure Undertale would sell exceptionally well on a Nintendo console.
@blackbox64 I think it would be cool if instead of closing the game, they could make it seem like the game was crashed with a normal error message, then bring the player to the Wii U menu. I think that would be even creepier than the original game window closing on PC.
MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After all, its basically Earthbound only more obscure.
@Vallu I'd rather it didn't, it takes AGES to load games on the Wii U. Longer than it should.
@Peace-Boy That's true.. However I don't think the WiiU should take long to load Undertale, probably same amount as a VC game. It would be really annoying to have to open the game again and again at that one point though. We'll see what happens if this port becomes a thing.
@Vallu That's a really good idea actually.
@Noelemahc Because Earthbound has previous for selling well on Nintendo consoles... ? Oh wait.
The Guacamelee port was pretty much spot on, so hopefully something can be done here. It would be great if Nintendo jumped in and helped so the risk of the port not making money is shared between 3 parties, rather than letting these much smaller companies risk their existence on porting.
I am filled with deTEMMIEnation for this game to come to Nintendo Wii U and I hope there is a physical release as I would potentially purchase two copies.
@Peach64 Earthbound is the second or third best-selling game on Virtual Console. It spent almost two entire years without ever dropping from the Top 20 best-selling Wii U digital games. So I'd say yes.
Wow, looks like some progress might be made... I'm all for Undertale on Wii U or 3DS. I'm curious to see how they'd do so many of the odd things in the game on a console. And man, how awesome would it be to have a physical copy? Maybe there could be a Frisk amiibo that (((Spoilers))) gives you back your soul after trading it away to play again, avoiding the implied ending of the post-genocide pacifist run. Or some other cool stuff...
Wow, I haven't gone crazy with imagination for something like an indie game since Cave Story, but honestly if Shovel Knight can get a physical release and amiibo, I really do think it's slightly possible for Undertale. I don't think some people realize how crazy popular this game is. I have friends that hardly play video games that know all about Undertale. I've seen Undertale drawings at my college in the art room. All the Undertale OST videos on youtube have millions of views. I don't know how it happened, but the game just blew up bigtime.
Wouldn't that be "stay determined"?
I would REALLY like to buy some Undertale amiibo personally.
DETERMINATION.
@Peach64 I think Toby can take that financial risk pretty well by himself. Undertale has sold more than 1 million copies on Steam, without any big price reductions.
BTW, there are at least one other company that has shown interest to port Undertale to Wii U as well (one which has direct experience with Gamemaker to Wii U ports).
Hey, if there's a chance go for it! You wouldn't see me buy it though because, thanks to the internet and part of the fanbase's obsession with it; I've been spoiled of most everything about the game.
Do it! Do it now! Especially if Nicalis isn't the one porting it! Also, wouldn't it be nice if it had something Earthbound-related in the Nintendo version?
Make it happen. Fox is open to and would like Undertale on Wii, Broken Rules want to do the port. Job sorted. Although I think Cure Digital are a better developer. Let's see if they say anything.
@blackbox64: I'm not sure what you mean but closing the game window doesn't differ from the function that is used when quitting the game normally. I've only seen the neutral route so I don't know if there's something different going on on other routes but nothing that happens on neutral is going to be a challenge to actual game developers. The crashes are pretty much just showing some images, saving the game and quitting the game. Nothing special, I can make a program that does the same.
EDIT: My friend told me about one of the endings and how the thing works. It certainly can't be replicated 100% but I'd say you can just figure out a new thing the players have to figure out. I don't know if it would make the fan base mad though.
If it happens, I'm all for it. I feel like the community on PC is a bit more..... Rabid...? Right now than I would care to identify with. I'd love to be able to enjoy it on my Wii U and would definitely buy a port in an instant. Enough time would pass that the fervor around the game might quiet down some and I can play it on my preferred gaming platform.
Please...
I would support a Wii U version of Undertale for sure. It's an excellent game and I hope this happens!
As much as I detest the rabid fan base for the game, I would like to see it console bound. It would be amazing if Nintendo was the one company that got the game
Haven't played the game but would definitely have a go if it was released on Wii U. For some reason I never buy games on my PC, I always prefer using a console.
Their port of Guacamelee was perfect. For the love of God someone port this masterpiece to consoles. I'd gladly buy it again to play Undertale one more time.
I'd actually love this. Please do it.
The only thing I would change (if I were porting it, that is) would be the final boss design. Seriously, that thing is absolutely rubbish; it's like some 6 year old was responsible for the design. Thank goodness the music is awesome, though....
Wow, that game looks really old. If they have to redo it from scratch, they could as well make a new game with decent graphics. Undertale looks like it's from the 80's. I wouldn''t buy it...
Nice! This news fills me with determination.
Well their code must be better than their game design. I bought chasing aurora and can hardly believe that was even meant as a game.
It couldn't rightly be called a port. More accurately, it would essentially be starting all over from scratch, because there is no transportable code at all. Them even referring to it as a "port" is a bit disconcerting.
NX will already be announced by the time they would start, and NX would have already released by the time a Wii U version would be completed. It's a waste of time and resources.
Not to mention, PC version with both a DRM-free copy and Steam copy is $10. Unless console versions come with an extra copy to give to friends as a promotion, $10 would be a ripoff, and $5 would probably lose money. The game was made on a shoestring budget of $51k, but it was made in Game Maker mostly by one person. Huge difference from the costs of real coding and SDK, and a full time team to pay.
If they did try to make it for a Nintendo console anyways, it might be better to wait until the My Nintendo account system is hammered out and released, then figure out how to make either an NX or mobile version. Maybe their OS will be better suited to the more... interesting tricks the game uses.
Yes please.
no, no, No, No! NOOO!!!
@erv Thankfully, they wouldn't have to worry about game design in this case. But yeah, I felt a red flag was thrown when they used the term "port" for a project that would have to be coded from scratch, on a system that is on it's way out the door. Not to mention, neither Wii U nor 3DS have an OS that can handle some of the more interesting mechanics of Undertale.
@GammaNoises Chill out, LOL. This isn't going to happen.
@PlywoodStick
I bloody hope not.
@Vee_Flames That's kind of the point since it's a six-year-old's design in-universe. Yeah, it's pretty obnoxious and jarring if you go in blind, but after you realize what's going on, I think it just adds to the tragedy of Asriel's character because, despite everything, he's still just a little kid who happened to get a raw deal.
@shani It's a love-letter to the Mother series, so it uses a similar graphical style on purpose. UT is hardly alone in using a retro aesthetic, especially when it comes to indie games. I mean, just look at Shovel Knight.
@GammaNoises We already got cursed with a port of Minecraft. I may have a love-hate relationship with UT, and a hate-hate relationship with its fanbase, but I think they're pretty much all already on the Wii U anyway thanks to that alone, so I don't think a UT port will bring in anyone obnoxious who's not already there.
@Alundra-1998 I see what you did there
I'd be interested in purchasing it if it's reasonably priced. After all, I'd like to see how good this game really is since I voted for it over Ocarina of Time as best game of all time.
@PlywoodStick well virtually everything is possible so example game booting to fake Wii U dashboard (where every game seems to be disappeared) is not so hard to do if that kind of things are part of game.
I just bought Undertale, super excited to check it out!
Well, calling it a port is a bit silly, but then it's not like they would be coding an original game, either. I have no idea what you would call it. Port is probably the closest word we have for what it would be. Perhaps translation? It's like translating a book from French to English. You're not writing a new book, but you have to choose the words carefully to maintain the spirit of the original.
That'd be nice. I kind of expect this game to be ported eventually, if not to WiiU, to the other 2 big consoles. This would also be cool on 3DS I bet.
@Peace-Boy One part of the game makes it crash and then ten minutes to load up.
Not too sure if I have the rights to comment this, but how are they going to find out (extremely awquard grin) rumor has it that Image&Form games are thinking of taking on the challenge... I am the rumor because I've been talking to some developers! I want this to happen for so long now that I never even bought Undertale because I just knew it will one day release on Wii U!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
problem is that it was made in game maker, and he said he didn't use the coding, so i guess that implies that he made it all with the in-engine UI features? which in an of itself is impressive, seeing as coding using their specific code is much more impressive, but i feel like that'd make it REALLY hard to port. like, they'd have to start from scratch, i imagine.
Maybe port their own Secrets of Raetikon first... The only reason I bought ChasingAurora was to support those guys and they deny us the best version of that concept. /rant. But sure I'm all for Undertale on the U
@BaffleBlend
I simply don't want to see cringy Undertale memes every time I start my WiiU. Bringing it to WiiU WILL do that. Mark my words.
I would die of neverending surprise if it didn't turn out that way.
@Socar Actually, i think it's the opposite
Oh these guys are ur-great! I am thankful they picked this one up. Can't wait to play it.
I really respect Broken Rules for their WiiWare game 'And Yet It Moves' and their Wii U Guacamelee port.
And yes, what about the Secrets of Reatikon port? That one looked so nice.
Probably scared because of Chasing Aurora sales. But that was just the racing/multiplayer part of an artful flying adventure, like a mix of Child of Light and Tengami.
Recently I bought Electronic Super Joy, and it would be great if they could publish the sequel too (I know it's been ported to Wii U by another developer) It's been out in the US for a while.
This has been my favorite game of the decade. I haven't loved a game like this since I was a child. I really, really would like console players (especially Nintendo ones) to experience it.
Knowing that the mouse might one day port UnderTale to a console...
It fills you with determination.
@Peach64 Back when it was first released, no. But it is one of the best selling games on the Wii U eShop due to it gaining a cult following. Plus, Undertale has one of the most persistant fanbases I have seen, other than Minecraft or Smash.
ok.
3DS please
The way it's looking, Undertale will definitely end up making it to Wii U- one way or another. Be it these devs or someone else entirely, it's gonna happen. The only true obstacle was his willingness to see it happen.
I hope it happens, and at a decent price!
Ha! You won't remember my genocide on a different console, will you? Take that, game!
This game HAS to come to the Wii U. It's too good to not. I can sort of understand people's hate for the game/fan base, but at the same time, I can't see them being so against it being on the Wii U. So what? The few miiverse posts that show up on your home screen might feature something Undertale related? Is that really that huge of a problem for you? Are you going to die just from seeing something related to the game? It seems like a bit too much to think like that. It's just a game. It's not going to kill you to see it. Just ignore it.
We all know he's going to refuse.
Toby Fox hates money.
