For those of you who aren't followers of the competitive gaming scene, the Evolution Championship Series (EVO) is one of the biggest annual fighting game tournaments in the world. Famous fighting games like Street Fighter and Tekken are featured and it gives viewers the opportunity to watch some of the very best competitive gamers in the world duke it out to see who's the best. The lineup for 2016's competition has just been announced, and Nintendo will have a few games making an appearance.
Super Smash Bros. Melee will of course be showing up, along with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. The new arrival this year is Pokkén Tournament, which will have been released in the west by the time that the competition will be taking place. It'll be interesting to see how the Pokkén Tournament fights go over, as the game will still be a relatively new release. For the full lineup, check out the announcement here.
What do you think? Will you be tuning in to any of the fights? What do you think of the lineup? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Pokken Tournament in EVO? What?
That's gonna be a lot of Wii U's. Guess they had to do something with all of those unsold consoles
Also: Pokken Tournament - your only shot at getting into Top 8.
Pokken at Evo? You mean we can see a brand new game that actually looks likes fun, and butthurt melee fans can't do anything about it? Neato...can't wait to see the meta.
woohoo!!! hey maybe they can sneak in a detecive pikachu hat and make him use the macho voice.
@Hachiko What are you going on about. Don't try to make this into some smash 4 vs melwe thing because that's unnecessary and tbh old.
Fun Facts: Pikachu and Ryu will each appear in a third of this year's games with one overlap between them. And together the two will appear in more than half of them. They also have games or appearances with indirect connections to Tekken 7 (Pokken is a Tekken spin off where Pikachu copies Heihachi's moveset, and Akuma appears in Tekken 7, who's a Ryu semi clone in Street Fighter)
Sweet! Can't wait. Pokken is kind of a suprise though.
@Zombo Lol, no. I respect melee, sm4sh and melee, dispite similar control schemes, have entirely different metas. It's when hardcore melee fans poop on everything else that doesn't have a wave dash or isn't 15 years old. That puts a damper on things, and thats when I really start to dislike the melee community. Melee is awesome, and takes more skill than most fighting games. But you don't see tennis players in hives disrespecting badmitten players cause their ball is a weird wiffle thing with slightly different rules. In all of these games the objective is the same: make your opponent's health/lives go bye bye.
Rant over.
I wonder if the gap is long enough for none of the characters in Smash Wii U to be banned. The hype train does end next month after all...
@Senario brawl was the best. Ever.
@Tsurii i agre they are the most toxic but there the only community that had to fight for the recognitioon of their games even against nintendo himself and being humiliated by boo from the others players during competition where they brought melee...
i think that is what made them so extremist
@Hachiko Thank you for derailing the comments section.
@Senario Pokken has LAN which will most likely be used for tournaments as I'm sure I read local multiplayer runs at a lower framerate (30fps) where as LAN runs at 60fps.
Urh, I wish Melee would die already.
@shingi_70 Seeing as its more popular then ever your wish has a slim chance of coming true.
Pokken isn't too surprising. It's already being played in tournaments in Japan. I believe I saw Justin Wong (a prominent Street Fighter/Marvel Vs. Capcom player) in one of those tournaments as well. So it's quite possible that the fighting game community has had their hands on the the game already, at least in it's arcade form.
@Jazzer94 Holy cow I didn't think this would derail the comment section. Sorry everybody...
But since its off the rails! Listen, as @Senerio seems to over look about my rant is this and I quote. "Melee is awesome and takes more skill than most games." However, finding distaste toward another game because the meta is different is extremely ignorant.
It'd be like saying Basketball takes no skill because golf has a smaller ball and a smaller hole to put the ball in. Or skateboarding isn't a sport because it's new and only young whippersnappers play it. Much like Pokken or even SFV, these games have yet to be proven, but I have no doubt in my mind they will pool some attraction. Not to mention, you don't have to play the game/sport in order to appreciate the level of skill it takes.
So the Melee players can stick to their guns, because they truely do have a talent most cannot achieve. I have tried to play melee, but it does not click. All in all, we must learn to respect each individual game that makes its way into thr circuit as an entirely new sport with its own set of rules. That being said, Pokken will have to still prove itself. Not all sports and competitions are worthy of being an olympic event, just the same not all games are worthy of EVO. But I'll give this one a chance.
Killer Insinct, Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, and Smash(Wii U) is what I'll be keeping an eye on. I have no interest in Pokken and I do like Melee but I am so done with that game. Needs Blazblue, Dead or Alive 5 and Skullgirls IMO.
@Yorumi I know plenty of melee competitive players that insult Smash for Wii U and the people that play it. I don't think the top players do it, but the melee fanbase is pretty toxic indeed. It's as if people can't like both games.
About the article, it's nice to see another Nintendo game in EVO. I guess it'll be good publicity to the "hardcore" audience.
Love reading butthurt comments from the Fighting Game Community about Pokken being at EVO!
Well looks like I'll be camping at Shoryuken.com for a little while then. Woo I am so excited for Pokken and SFV!
I'm surprised to see pokken make it in the list. There's gonna be so much hype for the game. Can't wait to see the chandelier fight!
Pokken is definitely an odd pick. I don't expect the game to be strong on a competitive aspect due to the seemingly lacking depth in gameplay and controller compatibility, but I'll check it out nonetheless and see how that goes.
@shonenjump86 Skullgirls yessss
@shingi_70 That hurts way more people than it would benefit but it doesn't matter seeing as Melee is only growing. Stay salty!
Funny, the only aggression I see in these comments is all directed towards melee fans.. Anyways as a huge Evo fan that plays zero fighting games; can't wait for the street fighter, guilty gear, melee, and now pokken! Very excited for July to roll on through
@Grumblevolcano they said as long as they are in 6 weeks before evo they are fair game
Why is Marvel 3 still on? Do people like seeing Morrigan and Dr. Doom win so much?
