While the big picture and overall sales history may not be kind to the Wii U in generations to come, the qualities of the system and some of its exclusive games have ensured that fans have happily picked up some titles in significant numbers. Super Mario Maker, Nintendo's fantastic level creation tool of 2015, has now joined a list of titles that have sold over one million copies in the US alone.
Nintendo confirmed the landmark to GamesBeat, which makes the Mario Anniversary release the sixth Wii U game to hit the landmark. These titles are below:
- Mario Kart 8
- Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
- Super Mario 3D World
- New Super Mario Bros. U
- Splatoon
- Super Mario Maker
It seems that Nintendo Land is excluded from the list by virtue of largely selling as a pack-in game, as we're pretty certain more than a million copies of the mini-game collection will be in US households.
In any case it's a positive result for Wii U and Super Mario Maker - it's a worthy addition to that elite list.

I own all but one of them. And I'm somewhat surprised Hyrule Warriors isn't there.
4 out of 6 are Mario games. It's no wonder he's still Nintendo's mascot.
Playing a lot of it recently, started following some good creators, love the Event Courses, and it's always enjoyable playing the courses of friends and family. I can't remember the last time I created a course myself though lol
AAA Mario titles crushing it.
Despite having Xenoblade Chronicles X, for some reason I cannot stop playing Super Mario Maker. I love it!!
Oh Mario....you save Nintendo like a million times and what do you get out of all that? Annoying trolls that say that Nintendo milks the hell out of you.
I don't mind franchises being milked as long as the games themselves are fun like me Mario.
That´s a great list indeed. I´d add titles like Bayonetta 2 or Xenoblade X, but they are more niche games, I´m afraid they will never become part of that list... DK:TF is surprisingly selling in a modest way compared to its prequel, I wonder why. Maybe the people didn´t expect another 2D DK so soon (and so similiar), or something...
@Spin And even Smash's main character could be seen as Mario. But I can't complain, Mario games can be really fantastic.
I own all but New SMBU. I dunno, it's kinda hard to justify buying it when you have NSMB for the DS, the Wii, and Super Mario Maker...
Glad i picked it up, so much fun creating levels with family and friends. It's great when my sister gets stuck or almost finishes a level and fails miserably lol!
@MrPuzzlez I agree it came out at the wrong time, and got flack for it, but its still a great Mario game, regardless of its similarities to the other versions.
So amazing game there. Lord knows how much I spent with Super Mario Maker. It's even my GOTY for 2015. Yoshi's Woolly World (not on this list, sadly) and Splatoon are good as well, in my book.
@Socar Agreed. I don't mind a franchise getting "milked" as long as there is fun to be had with it.
after re-release, bayonetta 2 should join the list.
Hopefully with Bayonetta 2 getting a new stand-alone version in NA and her inclusion in Smash,it'll get the boost in sales it needs to join this list too.
Like @DarthNocturnal, I have all but one (I never really understood the appeal of Super Smash Bros). I've been letting MM sit for awhile, but it's time to pick it up again and finally build me some levels.
its overrated and i think about selling it and buy a good game...there i said it...finnaly...please dont kill me
@DarthNocturnal hyrule warriors has broken a million world wide. These are just us numbers
This is a list of Wii U games that have sold over one million copies in the US alone, I'd imagine the likes of DKC: Tropical Freeze, Pikmin3, Hyrule Warriors etc have sold 1M+ worldwide
@MJKOP yup they all have. So has Lego city for that matter.
It absolutely deserves to be on that list.
Ahhh... Nintendoland... I feel so sorry for you....
Nobody criticising North American Wii U owners for not getting Xenoblade Chronicles X into the top 10 selling games for December like everyone did with the UK? Nobody slating the US because the PS4 outsold the Wii U by 4 to 1 in December? or the Xbone outselling it 3.5 to 1? Funny how it's only the UK sales threads that get that kind of anger when the games and hardware fail to do any better in other markets.
@Peach64
Wii U did better than expected with the leaked numbers coming in.
Xenoblade CX sold ~200k in the U.S. for December.
Which is way better than a game of that kind should do in any Western market.
Anyways all the games on this list are good games.
@faint cheers thanks, good to know. All very well deserved I'm sure you'll agree 👍
@Peach64 I'm pretty sure the biggest news story from the yearly NPD and the NPD for the month of December is that exclusives don't have as much sway as they used to. Oh, and Halo is no longer the juggernaut it once was.
So MH4 sells a million copies. In 2 days. In Japan. And it takes Mario Maker 4 months to sell a million? And that should be impressive?
I'm sorry, I'm being that guy again.
I just think celebrating a million copies sold is, in this era, celebrating the Wii U's astounding mediocrity.
It's a fifth or so of all system owners, which is a great number. But from where I'm sitting, it's just reinforcing how poorly the Wii U has sold.
Ten million, even five million sounds impressive. I just don't get how more games aren't on this list. It's pretty depressing how poorly the Wii U has sold overall. Again, less than a third of PS4 sales, with a year's headstart.
On a side note, Devil's Third sold 3K.
@IceClimbers That's kinda sad
@SahashraLA I think you need to re-evaluate things a little bit, either that or you're massively misinformed. 10 million? For an exclusive? In a few months? In one region? I'd say it would be a fair bet that exactly 0 PS4 games will meet all of those criteria in its lifetime. I'd say there's probably only one or two ever games that do. New Super Mario Bros Wii eclipsed 20 million in USA alone last year, and that is one of the highest selling individual games ever.
Mario games sell very well but I don't remember seeing many comments about people really wanting a new Mario game for NX.
@TheLastLugia I wish the 3D Mario games would sell as much as New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It's no wonder New Super Mario Bros. U turned out to be a Wii U launch game.
@Peach64 the UK does the worst tho. Even France does better
Evidence to the fact that reviews and Metacritic has become a direct influence on sales - each of these titles is an excellent game.
@Freeon-Leon For comparison, AC amiibo Festival did 36k in it's opening month in November, while Ultra Smash did 18k. Xenoblade X did >200k. Goes to show what quality does for sales. Also those are all physical sales only.
Remember how everyone on this site was saying that Ultra Smash and amiibo Festival would outsell Xenoblade X because of Mario and Animal Crossing being bigger brands? Xenoblade X did better than the other holiday games combined.
Edit: I just realized that I'm not sure which comment you were replying to. Were you replying to Devil's Third selling 3k or Halo and exclusives in general not holding as much power as they once did?
Christ, and this is why every other Nintendo game has Mario in the title. No one buys anything else! (except apparently Splatoon)
Are those games ordered from highest millions to lowest?
It's good going for the least selling home console .
Would have liked pikmin to be there, so under appreciated.
The Wii U had 10 games with sales over a million worldwide as of September 30 last year. Some are well clear of a million as well.

Shame the likes of Pikmin 3 and Bayo 2 aren't in there but that's good going considering the low sales of the console
Edit : According to Koei Tecmo Hyrule Warriors has sold a million as well
