As January wears on we're getting to the post-Holiday stages in terms of buzz and sales. Not many new titles are coming out, and reveals are thin on the ground as game companies draw breath and put plans in place. With that in mind we have a fairly unremarkable set of Media Create chart results out of Japan, albeit with some solid news for Nintendo among the sales drops.
Starting with software, the latest Atlus title takes the top two places on PS Vita and PS4. What follows is the usual batch of evergreen titles on Wii U and 3DS, with Card Fight!! Vanguard G: Stride to Victory!! on the portable making a modest debut in fourth place. The results are below with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [PSV] Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir (Atlus, 01/14/16) – 43,394 (New)
- [PS4] Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir (Atlus, 01/14/16) – 42,263 (New)

- [PSV] Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme VS Force (Bandai Namco, 12/24/15) – 6,090 (127,496)

- [PSV] Dariusburst: Chronicle Saviours (Chara-Ani, 01/14/16) – 3,675 (New)
In hardware we have fairly hefty sales declines across the board. The New 3DS LL (XL) takes top spot and actually increases its lead over PS4 and Vita, while the Wii U drops again but is still in five figures. The results are below with last week's sales in brackets.
- New 3DS LL – 30,172 (37,227)
- PlayStation 4 – 25,592 (36,559)
- PlayStation Vita – 18,202 (31,338)
- Wii U – 15,398 (24,722)
- New 3DS – 6,241 (11,610)
- 3DS – 4,797 (9,698)
- PlayStation 3 – 1,939 (2,784)
- 3DS LL – 1,162 (1,944)
- Xbox One – 99 (293)
A quiet week, overall, with the inevitable January lull taking hold - despite this there's still some cheer for Nintendo as its hardware and games maintain some momentum.

Looks like Wii U is starting to come back down to reality now. Just wait till the NX is fully revealed then that will most likely drop even more.
But wasn't the PS Vita supposed to be dead? Its software sales are still pretty interesting in Japan!
Sursprised not to see Mario Kart 8 in the list, like in the UK. Did they already sell all the copies to all the Japanese Wii U owners?
Anyway, at least Paper Mario Mix is still in the list...
@Mister_Wu Unfortunately the Vita is dead. Japan isn't big enough of a market these days to support a system. Outside of Xenoblade and Yokai Watch, very few games sell well enough in Japan to make them a success. There's no hardware that would be deemed a success just going on Japan either. They need to succeed in at least 2 out of the 3 big markets to be a success. Look at Xbone, it's sold hardly anything in Japan but still outselling the Wii U worldwide by 2 to 1.
@Mister_Wu That's what wonders me....how the hell is the Vita selling that huge in Japan? Its damn expensive. Heck twice expensive if in Japan!
I wonder if the next Ys game will be the killer app for Sony.....
*Monster Hunter and Yo-Kai Watch Xenoblade sells worse than Persona in Japan, actally. @Peach64
I'm not normally one to mention the poor Xbox One as it always does badly but its not even made triple digits this time.I don't think I've ever seen it as low as that.
Year over year Wii U is having a far better January in 2016.....probably vlose to 100% higher with another week to go
@OorWullie it's been 2 months since last exclusive AAA game for Xbox One. There is a big change that after NX is released then we get used to see Xbox One having those two digit sales in japan.
Wow Rhythm Heaven The Best Plus is being a bit evergreen! - mind you it is a fantastic fantastic game!
@Peach64
Actually we don't know how close Wii U and Xbox One are in total sales since Microsoft has not released any new numbers since they hit 10M sold.
Yesterday AMD said Xbox One and PS4 have officially shipped 50M globally combined.
Sony at the beginning of January said PS4 has sold 35.9M, but thanks to NPD leaks and Japanese charts, PS4 is far past that point now.
As of now PS4 is believed to between 37M and 38M.
If AMD and sales numbers are correct then this generation currently stands at:
PS4: 37M-38M
Xbox One: 12M-13M
Wii U: ~11M+
The reason why Xbox One has failed to gain 2:1 lead on Wii U, is due to Xbox One only selling in U.S., UK, and AUS.
Xbox One is dead everywhere else.
Wii U is selling slow but steady in U.S., CAN, France, Germany, Austria, South Korea, and Latin America.
They are selling decent in Japan.
The 3 biggest markets based on revenue and sales by countries are:
1) U.S.
2) Japan
3) Germany
This is the most accurate measure, instead of comparing Japan to all of North America (includes Central America) and Eurozone (18 countries).
@Xenocity Before somebody gets on you all nasty like, AMD said "shipped", Sony said "sold", 2 different things.
Potentially more important though is this from Neogaf, which unfortunately I couldn't find in the original - lots of gobblygook in the original.
"AMD re confirm that they expect a big semi-custom win to start shipping in the second half of 2016 (NX?)"
Question - w/ the launch of the Pokemon 2DS bundles next month will 2DS have it's own listing, or is that bundle a limited 1 shot so Media Create won't bother to add it to the hardware list?
@rjejr
AMD uses the term shipped because they are a part supplier (part suppliers use shipped not sold as general rule).
Sony uses sold because they made the final product.
So it is not big secret that Microsoft and Sony have received 50M CPUs and GPUs each from AMD.
That is how everyone yesterday was able to extrapolate Xbox One sales.
2DS will be listed as the bundle until Nintendo sells them as a standalone in Japan.
@Peach64 Xbone "outselling the Wii U worldwide by 2 to 1."
Where did you get this info. Almost positive that is not accurate.
Dat Darius flop tho
Should have released it on 3DS
Hope it will do better on Steam
@Xenocity But is it just me or the current home console generation is having an hard time reaching the previous generation levels? Not even the PS4, by far the most successful home console, seems to be able to reach the Wii levels. Let alone the Wii U and Xbox One that so far seem to be pretty much a flop compared to the past generation.
@Mister_Wu
Actually PS4 post price drop is tracking ahead of PS2 in global sales.
Whether or not PS4 is able to break 100M sold, is in part dependent no how low the price goes and how long Sony keeps it on the market.
PS2 literally sold 50M systems at the sub $150 mark post 2005.
PS1 literally sold over 30M+ systems at the sub $100 mark post 1999.
On the other hand Microsoft and Nintendo aren't matching their global sales from last gen.
Xbox One is selling faster in the U.S. than Xbox 360 did (360 was supply constrained it's first 1.5 years).
Though to be fair the average Xbox 360 owner bought 5 Xbox 360s according to NPD.
Can Microsoft find away to get Xbox One owners to buy 5 Xbox Ones before the successor releases?
@Xenocity Planned obsolescence (read: consoles that die a few days after the warranty expires)? At least in the EU we have that law that forces 2 years of warranty...
@Mister_Wu
Believe it or not it is quite rare for consoles to die that soon.
Sony was found guilty of that with PS2 in U.S. Federal Court and had to pay a huge $300M+ fine to consumers in the form of free games.
U.S. Supreme Court has now agreed to hear the class action case against Microsoft for purposely building and shipping faulty Xbox 360s to market.
Microsoft refused to honor most warranties, refused to fix disc drives that were breaking discs, and refused to replace said discs.
Microsoft lost $1.8 Billion on the RRoD fiasco by replacing all those consoles.
This new suit will determine if Microsoft is guilty and has to pay $2 Billion + over the other issues to consumers.
Building faulty consoles is really expensive in the long run, especially if you lose in court.
@Xenocity That's the way things should be, as planned obsolescence and cutting costs through less quality control are bad ideas to begin with at best and shouldn't be favored in any way (unfortunately even the Wii U that was given to me had a blinking blue light of death and I had to send it to the repair center).
@Mister_Wu
I know.
Though thankfully the only two systems I had give me trouble were my first Gamecube (my first one died a month out of warranty, but Nintendo replaced it for free with no hassle) and Dreamcast (the dreaded 3 year DRE for launch consoles).
Never had a problem with any other system to date (including my launch Wii U).
5% failure rate is legally acceptable in most manufactured goods.
No one else is surprised Splatoon is still in the chart? It did release for last summer, and I though most people would have already bought it, but it looks like I'm wrong. Nintendo scored a big one with that game.
@Luna_110 Exactly. That's what beauitufl about Nintendo. Even when their main console is a disappointment in sales, they manage to come up with a new IP that sells wells, other critically acclaimed games and a smash hit (also smash bros.) in amiibo. Ingenious.
I have a ps vita so it's nice to see it selling places its thanks to the fact it's sold wellish in Japan that I got games like danganronpa! In terms of new 3ds and new 3ds xl I've got the ambassador new 3ds and the animal crossing new 3ds xl! So either one is good but I prefer the xl the smaller one is prettier wth the faceplates though and is far more portable!
I often wonder how many sales are actually people just rebuying. The 360 was TERRIBLE for it - I had 2 myself, but I've seen a lot of people get through a lot of Xbox, due to RRoD mainly fond memories of doing the 'Towel Trick'.
If my Xbone stops working, I will probably not bother replacing it because ... well, it's just not very spectacular. How it's outselling the Wii U I will never know.
