When Bandai Namco confirmed Project Treasure as a free-to-start Wii U eShop exclusive at the start of 2015, it raised eyebrows and some hopes. Four-player co-op action games are relatively common, but a free-to-play entry in the genre on Wii U is certainly a unique proposition.
Now called Lost Reavers it's been released in Japan, and Bandai Namco is upping its game in promoting the title to its homeland. The latest effort in this goal is a three minute video showing off various aspects of the game. We see each of the four available characters, melee and range combat, some basic puzzle and objective solving and get a glimpse at customisation. Though hard to tell from a YouTube video we are concerned that performance looks pretty erratic, but are nevertheless keen to see how it plays in the real world.
Check it out below and let us know what you think.

Looks pretty swell! will try it out with others, will play as the sp00py skull man, hopefully it holds up well!
Nintendo needs to step up and deliver "Devil's Third" multiplayer as a free-to-play digital download. I am sure Namco's title will find a lot more audience than the (stupidly fun) "Devil's Third" multiplayer that it deserves.
Can't see this ever getting a western release. Bandai Namco the publisher behind the infamous Project Cars fiasco.
I'm also not sure free to play is where eShop should be going, just look at the Apple App Store where game progression is only possible through parting with more cash than you'd pay for a game or even a console.
I still prefer the name Project Treasure. From what I saw in the trailer, the game did look a bit off at times and frame rates did drop quite a lot. This is a free-to-play game (at least in the beginning) so I can't knock it down too much. Looks like it could be fun though; I wonder if this will be an 18+ game, then perhaps voice chat might be included. But then again Devils Third doesn't have voice chat even though that is an 18+/M game.
'Lostu Leavaaaaaahs'
x'D
Collecting loot is generally one of my favorite things to do in a game so I'd say that I'll enjoy this a bit if it holds together and comes to NA.
@Tsurii I was trying to be facetious with that remark due to the Project Cars being promised then delayed by Bandia Namco before being cancelled. I know it was confirmed for a western release. ☺️
Still don't think the pay to progress/win formula is where the eShop should be heading.
this looks a lot less rough than last time
Can't wait too check this out.
uch that frame rate
Best that I can tell from the video, the characters (in order of appearance) are Sayuri, Shadow Stalker, Victoria and Dwayne. Could be mistaken about the second one. His body's blocking more than half of his English name. lol
@Laxeybobby Namco was only the destributer. The cancelation was Slightly Mad People's choice.
I guess it's a 2016 release for the Wii U in the west... Together with fire emblem, Zeldax2, starfox, pokken tournament, looks pretty solid...
current gen Gauntlet?
Can't wait for the scathing Polygon review due to that cluttered HUD.
Japan should leave these sorts of games to the west.
While I can understand a move to online multiplayer as necessary to encourage players from opposition consoles to give Nintendo a look in, I'm really not keen personally. This feels like another experiment of sorts, a testing of the waters.
It's not that games aren't good, it's just that I'd prefer to play on my own. I don't like other people messing up my gaming experience, whether it's online lag, just unhelpful players on Tri Force Heroes or hackers with Splatoon. I like to play in peace. So, yes good to encourage a larger install base, but please don't stop with the single player experiences for the curmudgeons like me.
Still looks like it's in an alpha phase :/
They can't seriously be thinking of releasing it in this state.
@AVahne Thus, the harsh fact about third parties..... and yet, people still defend them.
Can "free-to-start" please die already. Not the games themselves, I'm ok w/ those, just the phrase being used in marketing. It's just too all-encompassing to mean anything at this point.
Tank! Tank! Tank! - 3 plays per day
Fatal Frame - basically a demo then you outright buy the full game
Pokemon Shuflfe - new plays every few hours
Pokemon Rumble World - can basically play non-stop forever but new balloons are so expensive you basically need real money to buy them all
Badge Arcade - maybe 1 try a day, then way too expensive at 5/$1
So which 1 is this? Can we do 1 mission per day? Do we get to play the first mission over and over like a demo but then buy the whole game like Fatal Frame? Are they doing microtransactions for new clothing and weapons?
Free-to-start is all but meaningless.
Also, this game looks too much like Soul Caliber Legends - on Wii - and that was a bad game.
I'll give this a try for free if it has online matchmaking so I can play w/ my friends, but that's about it.
I'm modestly excited in see what they make of this.
I cant wait to play this. It looks just like Phantasy Star Online type of play. It looks awesome to me.
Haha! Man, for free? What a rip-off, I'd actually pay to play that. Looks like a game my family can enjoy online together since we all got Wii u's. Any word on if there is communication/chat between players while playing together? That would be a fun element so we can scream at each other as we work together. (Try to)
@IAmDeclanJay
"I still prefer the name Project Treasure."
Lol, really? It's such a blatant placeholder name. I like the change from a marketing standpoint, as it has a deeper meaning. To each their own I guess.
Surprised to see so many positive comments. To me it looks painfully mediocre at best. I guess, if you are running a WiiU only, it might be an enticing option, but other than ... I fail to see the appeal, even if it weren't a f2p game.
With no voice chat it's impossible to lead a team and have fun!
dat framerate tho
I think that the way that free to start will really shine for me is when I have an assortment of F2S games on various platforms that I can cycle between while I wait for content to regen on each platform. I'll put real money into a game that is fun but also fair. There's no way I'm going to want to spend more than the cost of a regular game in micro transactions. I'd rather just maximise the amount of free content I can get out of them and pay for micro transactions for the very few times that it feels fair and justified.
@ThomasBW84
Since it's out in Japan any idea how the micro transaction in the game work?
Looks fun! I'm pretty excited for this. Really hope it's good.
