With the recent arrival of Cloud in Super Smash Bros., Square Enix and Nintendo seem to be bringing Final Fantasy back into the frame, even if the mainline entries continue to elude the latter's hardware. It's easy to forget with all of the current distractions, of course, that Final Fantasy Explorers is heading to 3DS in the West in January.
The twist for this entry is that it's very much a multiplayer RPG, with you being encouraged to team up with others while exploring the world and tackling foes. It's drawn some comparison to the likes of the Monster Hunter franchise though, to be fair, this is a rather different proposition.
It's an exciting release for fans of the franchise, in particular, and a flashy trailer shows off plenty of action and emphasizes the importance of multiplayer; will you be teaming up with some buddies to play this?

I've really been looking forward to this game. I'm a sucker for old school, Nintendo Final Fantasy. And this feels like a combination of that and new open world RPG elements.
Definitely worth keeping an eye on.
I'll probably just play MH4U until MHX drops.
Nice trailer, though.
Please bring Final Fantasy NES and GB games.
This game is looking pretty fun. I might pick it up next month.
already preordered, can't wait!
The title says "FF:Explorers" but the video looks like "FF:Hunters". Which would be ok, some of my favorite FF game play was FFXII after I finished the lame main story I hunted monsters for 100 hours, but is there any exploring in this or is it MH w/ an FF skin? Some of my favorite time in XC was just exploring, so I like that aspect of game play as well. DQ8 on PS2 had a lot of open world to explore. This video makes it look like a battle arena.
Is there a storyline, or are you just running around with a team to kill monsters?
@abbyhitter There is a story in the single player, but it works like monster hunter (quest after quest)
@rjejr The map is mostly "open". It's divided in zones but each zones can be accessed in a single quest. It's pretty large as well. However, most quests are "kill X" or "collect Y" and the goals are usually in a single zone.
AND THE HYPE CONTINUES. Been on this game since day one, can't wait to play with my buds. Migrating to this from Fantasy Life, which is another amazing online co op RPG.
when i was a young boy/girl final fantasy was um...not like this.why do they call this final fantasy?the only game worth that name was bravely default.it makes no sense to me.i will try this, looks like it can be fun but why not calling it something else, ijust dont get it
@Lilith93 Because it's a spin-off. If it were a new IP it probably wouldn't sell as well.
Looks promising, I'll probably pick it up so to satisfied me before Bravely Second comes.
Watching this one very closely, definitely getting it if reviews are positive.
I miss FF9...
My life would be complete if they gave FF6 a 3DS remake.
Really interested in this. I didn't get into Monster Hunter but the fantasy aspect of this game appeals to me more. Will wait for reviews before I decide to buy it though.
I haven't played it but it looks like an intermediate step for the people who find Fantasy Life too easy and Monster Hunter too hard.
I wish I had time to play it. Looks pretty cool
Yall remember to get either a New 3DS or a Circle Pad Pro. Otherwise you'll be doing a Reverse Claw which just won't be comfortable. Unless, of course, you've already been using the reverse claw on the 3DS MH games for whatever reason.
Voice chat? Anyone? Please say so!
@Lord
This is a Nintendo game, after all. So the answer of course will be no.
Expect a clunky, touch screen based communication system that isn't sufficient. Or the ability to type text out 6 words at a time like Animal Crossing.
@Captain_Gonru 1 more week. Opened the guide yesterday just to take a peak. The screen cleaner is pretty cool. I looked a littl eat the 5 maps, and the bestiary at the end. HD FTW.
BTW hope I didn't insult you w/ the shelf stocking comment. I'm not exactly sure what it is you do, but I know it isn't stocking shelves. I wasn't insulted today, but it felt like it, when the MILF at the bus stop told me her mom was 49. Ouch.
Looks fun. Already preordered the special edition, so let's hope it's good.
@SupremeAllah minekraft and black ops have it.
Day one!
I like final fantasy as much as most everyone else, but thi trailer doesn't help me make a decision since its again only focused on multiplayer. There's always subtext saying you can play solo but I haven't really seen any solo gameplay. I don't have anyone I can play with, especially being a 42 year old dad. Will I be able to play this solo and is it a hunting game like monster hunter? I don't care for those. If so, I'll just wait for world of final fantasy. That one looks like it'll be closer to a real jrpg. I'm just afraid this is monster hunter and it's just not my cup of tea.
Ok so you caught my attention at Monster Hunter.
If it is turn based combat though, then colour me not interested!
@Captain_Gonru So still no rollerblades huh? Or hoverboards? Or jetpacks? Human's can build giant spaceship cities and skells but nobody ever thinks to bring along a Marty McFly hoverboard for getting around. Oh well, at least the skells will seem that much sweeter. It really bothered me that the high entia had that docking station under their city but they never thought to invent boats for sailing and recreation or jetskis for their teenagers to have some fun. Swimming around was always such a drag.
And I know what you mean about time. I'm actually very concerned how I'm going to play it. I usually only game about 1 hour a night, and that just isn't going to cut it for this.
Is the FF1 remake included? That's the main reason I want to get this game 😝👍
As long as it plays more like an ARPG like Blue Dragon Awakened Shadow and less like a Monster Hunter game, color me interested. Not a popular opinion but to be fair I tried Monster Hunter Freedom and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate hoping I would like the games and just wound up hating them.
This looks really fun! Definitely going to get it, it looks very MH and MH4U was a good 300 hours of playtime for me.
Kind of wish I had friends to play this with. . .hopefully the single-player is just as strong. Will wait for a review.
@Captain_Gonru "Btw, did you download the data packs?"
I did, twice. Once on the external, then on the internal. Then I deleted the external to see if it will run off of the internal. Don't suppose there's any way you can actually tell if it's using the data packs or not? Does the game itself ask fro them when you start it up?
I've been busy playing Yoshi. I had quit after World 2-2, but then I remembered the amiibo. So now I play mellow w/ the amiibo. It's a very different game that way. Oh and I use badges, I like having Poochy along. And bouncing out of the pits.
I tried playing Splatfest but too many 1 sided games - my team 10, 17, 18 and me at 33, the other 35, 38, 50, 50. And then another when 1 of my teammates "poofed" on the starting gate so we were down a man and got demolished. And Mahi Mahi is cool, but it sin't really conducive to turf war, nto enough stuff to ink. Out of my 10 matches probably 7 on there, 2 in the hieghts, and 1 in underpass. And if you aren't playing Splatoon then you have no idea what I'm talking about. Time for bed. Oh, glad you are enjoying XCX, 5 more days and then I can start checking Miiverse again. Well maybe another week to catch up.
@Captain_Gonru Target has 4 month old Lego Jurassic World for $37.99, yet nearly 3 year old Lego City Undercover is still $50 on the eShop.
That is compeltley off topic BTW. That Lego box on eShop just annoys me no end.
@Captain_Gonru I don't think I've ever seen LCU on a store shelf. But even if it was, it should still be $19.99 after 2 1/2 years. $50 may be ok if it has Mario or Zelda in it, but not for a single player non-licensed non-mascot game. Noticed my copy of Super Mario Sunshine on my kids dresser next to his Wii w/ the big "Player's Choice" top banner. I miss those days of Nintedo wanting people to actually play it's games, rather than just bragging about how they don't want to ruin their reputation by putting their IP on mobile, then signing a deal with DeNA to put their IP on mobile. Maybe if there was a Player's Choice fo rWi iU games this holiday w/ Pikmin 3, W101, NSMBU and LCU people would notice all the great games on Wii U at great prices and then buy a Wii U to play them. Wi U has been on the market for 3 years, that's long enough for a Greatest Hits line of basically launch titles. DCKTF should be $30 a well, it's a 2D platformer built on it's Wii predecessor.
Oh, I certainly haven't forgotten. Preordered and everything, already.
I need this in my life
This game looks ace. I'll have to look for the special edition soon!
Without voice chat this is dead in the water!
