Nintendo has certainly made some rather unforeseen choices when deciding what costumes to add into Super Mario Maker. We've seen one that combines Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario, one that has three Toon Links standing in a totem pole formation, and even one of a random Japanese game show host. These don't really seem out of place, though, as the whole game is a rather off the wall entry in Nintendo's most popular franchise.
Data miners have recently discovered the sprites for a new costume hidden in the system data. The costume is a nice callback to a lesser known part of Mario's history, it's a black and white sprite of Mario flying the plane from Super Mario Land. If you'd like to see it for yourself, the ID is 4078-0000-0121-4C73, but tread lightly; the stage has apparently caused the game to crash for some people.

Huh. It's cool to see Super Mario Land represented as it was my first Mario game.
YES! If this is true that is awesome. We can definitely see the shooter levels making a return.
Sucks having surprises spoiled but I'm happy to see this as an (possible) addition regardless.
Slightly amusing. But... How do I get that little castle sprite though?
Its a plane, nice to see it again!
WHY DOES NINTENDO HATE DAISY SO MUCH? I mean seriously--the list of things that they skipped over her for to put in Super Mario Maker is already long and ridiculous enough, especially since all they had to do was swap a palette they already had for the Peach sprites they already had, but now they're putting in something from her first game? If it turns out this is one of many additions which includes her I will admit to having overreacted. But if they skip over her yet again I will lose my *&#!.
@PanurgeJr I'm almost certain we'll get more Mario-series amiibo, including Daisy, at some point, and at that point they'll likely update the game with the new amiibo characters.
@PanurgeJr Perhaps Nintendo is saving all of the Daisy hype for a game of her own? After all, Peach had Super Princess Peach.
Still wants Squid Girl. TwT
Its a WW1 style plane , not a spaceship. Love that game.
@Cael86 I would love for there to be a Super Princess Daisy, and think Sarasaland would make for an interesting setting. I also think there's more potential to a Luigi-Daisy relationship than Mario-Peach. But Nintendo never creates games to explore characters, they create characters to fit their games, so I don't see any of this happening.
1. "Random Game Show Host"?
Uh, no. First off, Game Center CX is not a contestant game show. It is a tv series about video games. Retro video games. Nintendo games and Super Mario Bros games regularly make up entire episodes where the point of the entire series is that Arino, who is a former Japanese comedian, NOT a game show host, challenges himself to play a video game in a specific time limit (usually in under a day, but sometimes extends the challenges to multiple days).
In Japan, Shinya Arino himself has had a long and storied history of promoting Nintendo and other game companies with the games regularly featured, but is a HUGE figure i the retro gaming community in general. Far from "random", and very integral to Nintendo's interest as he has made a specific effort to play a great many Mario and Nintendo titles, and had greatly rejuvenated interest in Japan for retro gaming in a big way. It only makes complete sense for him to be featured, especially given, in Japan, he was one of the biggest sources for Japan's pre-release Super Mario Maker hype, featuring the game in several televised challenge attempts as previews.
And secondly, the Sky Pop from Super Mario Land is a plane, not a "spaceship"
How do you work for a site about Nintendo news again?
I'd much rather see Mario Land selectable from the in-game drop-down menu with complete level graphics... But this is better than nothing I suppose!
@inverse Haha, that's awesome, man. Do you watch it often?
@NaturalGus
It's a hacked level. If you look at the left edge of the screenshot, you'll see the flagpole right there.
How about an entire Gameboy engine...
That's a touch obscure. Or is it? When it's Mario that is...
Loved SML such an unusual, bite-sized Mario adventure. That reminds me: bring back Tatanga Nintendo!
Meh ... I'd rather have a Super Mario Land game theme ;D
@Cael86 Waluigi needs his own game!
I'd like a Mario land mode. It would be good to see the kind of levels from that game in the colourful NES graphics. But maybe Mario land levels would be too difficult to fit in, given how different they are.
And I was just saying the other day that Nintendo should have made the fire clown car use this plane from Super Mario Land, instead of cheaping out and just chucking a rubbish flame graphic on the current clown car.
It would make so much more sense to use this classic little plane from Super Mario Land as the vehicle design that's obviously going to be used for loads of shmup type levels. But no, Nintendo goes with the rehashed clown car and uses this plane as a constume, in a way that just makes no sense and looks stupid.
Still, 90% of the game is genuinely awesome, so I can't complain too much for the few issues it has, I guess.
@Not_Soos you trying to say our King and God Waluigi will get an amiibo?!
@Grumblevolcano I agree so much, and an amiibo to go with it
Oh my God, FINALLY the Gameboy games get some attention! Granted, I would've preferred a Mario Land theme, but I'll take this.
>even one of a random Japanese game show host
Please. Just because you aren't educated enough to know who they are doesn't make them "random". Also while they host a show about games it's not a game show in the sense of how it's usually used. The show has been really popular and has been running for over 10 years in Japan. There was one overseas release, but since then fans have been fansubbing it to share with people who can't speak Japanese.
If Super Mario Land stuff is being added, Captain Syrup when?
@NintyMan
This. At least Daisy actually appeared in a main Mario game.
Yes!
@Lizuka true, the levels were quite a bit longer. Some backdrops / terrain would be a nice addition. When we get the koopa clown car that shoots fire, I'll be making a level with this underwater like the submarine level.
The costume I really want.. the one that comes full circle with Mario Paint (that this started of as) and brings in the "special stamp" tool.. to let you create your own costumes. Hey, I can dream...
But Mario Land.. this is cool.
Awesome! I really love Super Mario Land!
That level code doesn't work.
@ekreig - You had better be trolling. What do Mountain Dew and Doritos have to do with knowing stuff about Japanese entertainment shows? Get educated/interested or get out, the site doesn't need bullies like you.
Whew man, there is some seriously intense rage coming out on this thread. Everybody must be stuck in Xenoblade Chronicles X.
Calm down, gang. It's just the Internet.
Gah! I'm too late!
@Zoda_Fett I certainly hope we get a Waluigi amiibo! (And a classic-clothes Wario.) I feel like it's bound to happen at some point. P.S. Sorry for the late reply; I'm bad about not checking my Nintendo Life mentions.
