Well, it's happened. The PS4 and Vita may have a cooler Virtual Console release than Wii U and 3DS this week - well, sort of.
Super Star Wars, the extremely tricky but fun SNES action platformer is coming to the PS4 and Vita in this week's North American PSN update, though it'll have some neat extras. From the PlayStation Blog:
Enhanced for PS4 with new save features, leaderboards, Trophies, and updated display and controller options. Risk your life as a Jedi Knight! Join Luke, Han, and Chewbacca in their fierce war against the evil Empire.
It's not the first game from classic Nintendo hardware to be emulated and released elsewhere, of course, with Rare Replay on Xbox One being a sore one for some. This week we do know that Europe is getting Animal Crossing: Wild World on the Wii U VC, though, and players in Europe and North America can still buy all three entries of Super Star Wars for 800 points each on the Wii Virtual Console; these can also be accessed via the Wii U's 'Wii Mode', don't forget.

I loved this game would be great on vita. I wonder if you can still find the infinite life cave in this version.
I wonder how many of those dude bro's who have a PS4 are actually going to buy it or better actually beat it?
All three were fun.....especially playing as Chewbacca! Wonder if they will sell well on Sony?
I'll have to pick that up on my Vita, loved it as a kid.
The confusion is strong in this one.
This is hilarious, I love how the other consoles are schooling Nintendo on Virtual Console games from THEIR HISTORY!!! But on a side note, with cloud coming to Smash maybe we'll get FF7 on our virtual console? Maybe? Hello? This thing on?
@TwilightAngel I own it and I beat it, does that make me a Dude Bro?
@ikki5 without codes??? That makes you a dude bro guy! I have never beaten the Canteena without the weapons code.
@ikki5 ? That makes no sense. I meant all the dudebro's who has a PS4. And i asked if they're going to buy it?
I'll have to pick it up when I get a PS4, but this is definitely an odd choice. I've still got my SNES version anyway (Still need to finish, it, too), but the updated version sounds cool.
@ThomasBW84 there's a maintenance tonight on the DS/Wii channel. They could remove those SNES Star Wars on the Wii shop!
Those 'Super' games were really hard for me.
Beat all 3 on the SNES.... about 15-20 years ago.lol
@ Freelance
They are balls hard, i went back to the first one and i was thoroughly impressed with my childhood performance, i aced those games way back when. In saying that all those old platformers took some time to master but once you did that was 80% of the battle right there.
@Splatburst I guess we have to buy them quickly just in case!
@NauticalCrimes
Way down that cliff right? Probably the 4th or 5th level iirc.
Nintendo can't even release their own SNES games lol
@Kevlar44 yeah man, I wouldn't have been able to see half that game without it, let alone complete the thing
can't you just get snes games on the wii u via wii VC? if so then just buy it there if it is there and BAM Wii U instantly beats other systems in the in the vc department for the most part...
@Mrclaycoat When you're a kid, you have a lot of free time, It wasn't as hard as Ninja Gaiden, that game I still have yet to beat without save states.
I don't mind these games coming out on Sony consoles, but skipping Nintendo for it despite having had their original launch on a Nintendo system is pretty cheap, kinda like how NamcoBandai ported pretty much every Tales of game on Nintendo consoles to PS3/VITA (sloppily, if I might add), but flat-out ignored 3DS and WiiU - not a big loss, but it's matter of principle.
Sony does what Nintendon't
My initial reaction was ha ha ha
Then I saw "cross buy" and it became BWAH ha ha ha ha
Not to say a SNES game wouldn't release w/ a simultaneous cross buy for both Wii U and 3DS, I know Mario vs DK did, but can't think of too many others.
That said, if I cared either way I think I would be more upset about Wii U not getting SW:B than a really old SNES game. And yes, I know, it's EA so Wii U was never going to get it, but at some point Nintneod needs to get something besides Mario Tennis and AC:aF. Fortuantley this year it is getting XCX. I'm sure that Nintendo will blow SW:B out of the water w/ it's marketing promotion for XCX. Any day now. Something. Anything? No boob slider or bikini bottoms? Oh gee, thanks.
@KingofSaiyans Click on my profile and you'll see. And i said dudebro cause. The PS4 is a dudebro console. Why all of them that had a Xbox 360 went there and that's why shooters sell better on there than the X1. lol
I won't be at all surprised if they release them all the week of the new film, or perhaps once a week in December in the run up to it.
@rjejr Get yourself a PS4 for Christmas and never look back
I don't remember this game being very good, although that was a long time ago and I never finished it.
I mean, they are clearly just trying to make whatever money they can off of the release of The Force Awakens, which is fine, but I'm not personally upset by it.
@Freelance I had a rough time with the Super Star Wars games too. I tried to finish them but got too frustrated.
@ikki5 I remember renting it as a kid and I just couldn't beat that boss to save my life. I would grind till the wee hours, eventually opting for the weapons code (thank you Nintendo Power) that boss needs Chewie and the Plasma Gun or it's over. I was able to beat the rest of the game without any extra help eventually and when you finally blow up the death star, well there were tears running down my eyes. So epic.
Lol why even mention Animal Crossing at all in this article? Like that's will cure anyone who's annoyed by this.
@Kaze_Memaryu They ported Abyss to 3DS and gave that version a proper release in Europe (Europe did not get the original PS2 release).
Also, it seems the Innocence/Hearts remakes suffered from being on Vita, with Japanese fans raising the obvious question: why aren't they on 3DS?
Lack of Wii U release is obvious; slow start means fewer adopters means 3rd parties won't make games for it which means fewer adopters...
@shigulicious Can't do that. Already ordered Dragonball XV for PS3, Disney Infinity, Skyalnders and XCX for Wii U. Would be kind of redundant, or idiotic, to have a PS4 under the tree next to all of those games for other consoles, no?
My birthday is in July, I'll get one then. Along w/ U4 and R&C. Who knows, maybe the "Slim" will be out by then w/ 1TG HDD? NX will have to wait until about 2018, even if it launches in 2016. Or the kids can get one sooner, I'll take the PS4 to my bedroom.
I want these on Wii U, but I should probably buy them on Wii when I can to make sure I own them lol
The Super games are only exclusive to PS4 at the moment.
It's part of the deal Sony inked with EA and Disney over Starwars Battlefront.
Once the deal expires, they should be releasable on all platforms.
Super Star Wars cooler retro release than this weeks The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass & Spirit Tracks, or Animal Crossing: Wild World? You're such a joker. Especially since we we got Super Star Wars and the whole SNES trilogy years ago on Wii VC, and even more years ago on SNES.
Even though I love my Vita, I'd rather have this on my 3DS. But, I guess SNES will never release on 3DS VC. I sincerely hope the NX will have a worthy, robust Virtual Console library that I can take with me anywhere...
GLAHHHH.......BLARRRRGH!
Wow they're taking every excuse for more Star Wars. It is everywhere, like they really really want this movie to be massive.
I have this on my snes still. It's tough. Thanks for the reminder that I need to get the other 2 as well. If anyone is a fan of Super Star Wars, there is an Indiana Jones game that is very similar as well on the snes. Luckily, that game has all 3 movies on it.
@TwilightAngel That doesn't mean everyone who bought said system only play FPS games. I bought a ps4 for SFV and Uncharted 4.
I'll be getting this.
@Superryanworld Just let it go he's just a bitter Nintendo Fanboy that's all.
@Tasuki lol. Oh damn me saying the truth about the PS4 got you rolling huh? Just kidding
@Superryanworld Far cry 4 sold 3.50m copies alone on the PS4 and it sold 1.27m on the X1 alone. Wolfenstein: The New Order sold 1.39 million copies on the PS4,Battlefield 4 sold 2.85 million,COD ghost sold 3.19 million Advance Warfare sold a whopping 7.03 million copies! Number's don't lie people bought the PS4 for shooters and that's it. You're in the minority fam that actually bought the PS4 for other things besides shooters.
@DarthNocturnal all 3 are in Wii vc
@TwilightAngel So I guess only kids play Nintendo systems
The games fun but deviates frim the story and has creatures not in the movie
I recall playing the first Super Star Wars on the PC in DOS and I own a mint copy of the game for the SNES. I do hope there will be a nice cart with all 3 games on it for the 3DS.
WHAT'S BECOME OF THE WORLD!
'Waah people who own PS4s don't like SNES games or difficult games or Star Wars they just play Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty!!! Stupid chads and dudebros!!'
Grow up please fellas.
Finally a reason to play my Vita
Good for Sony. If Nintendo can't bother porting their Wii VC games to Wii U, or at least give us a clear answer on what will happen to our digital games and if they'll be able to make the jump to NX (without us rebuying them), then it's up to other companies to deliver where they are failing. I would love to see more SNES games come to PS4 and Xbone.
That being said, no way am I buying this game. It's too hard for me.
@Captain_Gonru I didn't wait 2 1/2 years to buy a PS4 so I can tell my grandkids I bought the "No Man's Sky" bundle. U4, R&C or FFXV. And FFXV only just dawned on me. If that came out w/ some crazy decorated PS4 like the slime for DQ I'd have to wait. Well as long as thy announce it before my birthday. FFXV has to come out eventually, right? FFVII is my first modern videogame - took a break between Atari 7800 and PS - and I bought a PS2 for FFX. I'm not waiting for the FFVII remake though, I'll be blind and deaf by then.
@EXP So then I guess kids and causal gamers own Wii U's then.
@TwilightAngel Man, that's a large generalization to call people because they went for a different product.
I beat them on the Snes as rentals but not on the Wii VC ones I bought.
@Tasuki And no they're people who are blinded by nostalgia
@ikki5 Number's don't lie. And aren't you fighting a battle for breasts equality in another article fam?
My husband will have this and the ps4 and Star Wars Battlefront tomorrow đź‘Ť Another loss for Nintendo lol. They should have been the ones releasing these games!!
Already got these on the Super NES so no need to buy these again.
Well I'm ditching Nintendo for christmas anyway by getting a PS4, got sick of watching all of the new big game releases going by. And I like the features the PS4 has going for it.
@CrazedCavalier I understand the WiiU part, but the TotA 3DS port was really bad, which is rather ironic when the game itself already sucks. They hardly care at all, and even their Tales of strategy game is going nowhere.
As for Hearts/Innocence R, I don't know how well they sold, but I always question ports to VITA when it's not even selling in japan anymore, but developers insist on it being the best choice, instead of a dual release or somesuch shenanigans.
Quit complain. They are already available years ago in Wii (mode). So play them and give support to Lucas Arts in VC.
@DarkEdi I think now it goes to Disney as Lucas Arts is no longer in business.
@Tasuki Sega boasted the same thing, and look what happened to them. If memory serves, people even did research and found that Sega worked with the Yakuza to kidnap a developer's sister to keep them from collaborating with Nintendo.
Nintendoes everything...except for cloud saves. Not yet at least.
Why wouldn't they just release the original SNES version via the Wii U eShop? (along with other Star Wars games such as Rogue Squadron?)
@kensredemption Sega went out due to mismanagement. After the disaster that was the 32X and then the Saturn they were done for. Not even the Dreamcast could save them.
@TwilightAngel well I have a ps4 and I will be buying it and no I didn't buy the ps4 just for shooters I bought it for sony's exclusives and the wealth of multiplatform that's to come, just because a lot of shooters sell on a particular system doesn't mean that that's all that people want to play on their system that's just stupid
@ReigningSemtex Man numbers are something you guys don't like huh? Cause i just showed you the numbers of shooters sold on the PS4. But i'll do it again!
.Far cry 4 sold 3.50m on PS4
.Far Cry 4 sold 1.27m on X1
.Wolfenstein: The New Order sold 1.39 million copies on the PS4,
.Wolfenstein: The New Order 0.57m on the X1
Battlefield 4 sold 2.85 million on PS4
.Battlefield 4 1.79m on X1
Call of duty Ghosts sold 3.19m on the PS4
.Call of Duty Ghosts sold 2.55m on the X1
.Advance Warfare sold a whopping 7.03 million copies on PS4
.Advance Warfare sold only 4.71m on the X1
What does this show you? The majority of people who bought the PS4 got it for shooters or only buy shooters on the PS4. The rest like you (I'm going to say the 2 million of you)are in the minority of buying the PS4 for exclusives which i don't know for some reason. All i know one's a good looking shooter and the other is a game that's just plain fantastic. So there i know i sound like a broken record right now. But numbers don't lie friendo.
@TwilightAngel listen kid (I'm assuming your a kid based on your naivety) those numbers don't prove anything apart from the fact ps4 has a bigger install base then xbox one and that shooters sell well which neither of these statistics surprise me, what it doesn't do is prove the intention of a console purchase you couldn't possibly know this unless you went around asking each and every individual.
Everyone knows that shooters are popular but I doubt people buy a console just for the shooters if that was the case they would probably all be pc gamers
@ReigningSemtex Damn someone on the internet called me a kid that's a new one. And you called me a kid for showing you facts that your console has been bought by dudebros and casual's! And you're in the minority of people who actually bought the console for exclusives! Damn fam it must hurt that your system is called a dudebro console. Cause that's the worst title you can give a console! Ever!
But you want to know who bought those type of games? The people who were on the Xbox 360 last gen that only bought shooters that now bought a PS4 to buy those shooters aka dudebro's. Damn kid (that's not older than me,but is gonna tell me you have a loving family! Cause everyone has one!) Keep fighting facts. It's going to make you all kindz of gains. All kindz
I saw this today at workon PS4 console bundles. That depressed me a little bit.
@TwilightAngel whatever mate i dont care what tag a console has if it has games I want I buy it, and no it doesn't 'hurt' that my system has any sort of label I have all current systems so you see there really isn't a 'my system' to mention they are all my systems. You sound simple fam
I still have all three SNES cartridges - great games.
@TwilightAngel What are dudebros?
@TwilightAngel
I'm not seeing the connection between shooter dudebros and playstation 4 owners. I bet if you ran the numbers with Japanese games that are also on the Xbone you will get higher sales on PS4 as well. oh, and most likely we would see the same thing with all games that are on both consoles (adventure, horror, rpg etc).
@TwilightAngel Is there anything wrong with shooters though? Seems more strategical and fast paced compared to say, sword fighting. Bullets can be so fast and deadly... you have to plan your maneuvers while trying not to die and take cover. Not to mention conserving all and scavenging for whatever you can. There's a major appeal to that sort of thing, and there's nothing wrong with that. Some shooters have even brought forth better stories than Nintendo could ever dream of creating (BioShock for instance).
@evosteevo : People whose vocabulary primarily consists of words such as "dude", "bro" and "like". Any combination of the three are usually used in every sentence that they utter (with the occasional profanity).
I sold my Mega Drive to buy a SNES, to play Super Star Wars and Starwing.
Glad I downloaded all 3 on the Wii in case they disappear. It's much more difficult to play with the GameCube controller than on the SNES I think.
The trilogy was awesome back on the SNES hoping for a Wii U VC release aswell.
I love nintendo, but the Star Wars games for SNES were made by EA, so EA can do whatever they want with them, and since you can still buy them on the Wii shop, then you can still own them for the Wii U. I know it's sad, though, that nintendo isn't really getting anything Star Wars (I honestly hate Star Wars to begin with), but I own a Wii U and PS4, and since my PS4 is played more, I'll pick it up to get my retro fill. I only wish Atari would release another compilation of some of their classics and even a retro-joystick for use with it...that would be my love of going back to my childhood.
Other than all of this, nintendo just needs to get 3rd parties back on board with them, and they can do this with the NX...as long as they advertise the heck out of it and have a strong launch library that doesn't consist of just 3-5 games and a bunch of items on the E-Shop that has already been released numerous times.
Wii U and Vita are the best consoles of the current gen, by a long way.. The Wii U is fantastic for Nintendo exclusives and VC, and the Vita is the king of indie gaming!! Long live the OLED screen! (none of this new cheap Vita nonsense)!
@sillygostly Totally agree. I would much rather see more N64 and GC releases such as Rogue Squadron 1 and 2. With the new movie soon out, seems like a no brainer. I imagine Disney would have the rights now, but it is probably more complicated than that.
Or what about Star Wars Racer for N64? I loved that game.
EDIT: Or even 1st party titles such as Luigi's Mansion. Or Sega's Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2. We got Wind Waker HD, but I guess we really haven't had any GC games on VC.
@BlatantlyHeroic His point isn't about the quality of the shooters his point is about the userbase.
Despite the large number of developers on board the PS4 userbase largely buys 1st and third person shooters(and FIFA) moreso than any other game infact so overwhelmingly so that other games are actually dwindling. Games like Disgaea V selling less than 100k worldwide and 21k in the US (compare that to say Fire Emblem Awakening on the Nintendo 3DS selling 1.79 million and over 100k in its first month just in the US), Dragon Quest Heroes releasing to 31k in the US (that's less than Chibi-Robo Ziplash sold).
In the past(well PS2 and PS1) the Playstation systems actually had some JRPGs, Platformers and Racers in their top 10 sellers. But given Assassin's Creed's and the racing genre's collapse the PS4's top sellers are going to be Shooters, FIFA and Sandboxes with shooting(GTA). The problem is homogenization there's no incentive for developers to do other things if they're all getting best sellers by making shooters and everyone not making shooters are selling less than ever before.
Wii mode to the rescue once again!
@BlatantlyHeroic Hmm? Never said anything that made me say shooters are bad. The posts i made was a joke at first and then it turned an argument for some reason. And if my words showed i hate shooters. I will say i don't.
@evosteevo what sillygostly said
@ReigningSemtex lol. I really hope you don't think i hate the PS4. I just hate the people who bought the console just for shooters and nothing else.
@TwilightAngel what other people buy their consoles for doesn't effect me so I don't let it bother me.
I think we can all agree that buying a console purely for 1 genre is just stupid, why would anyone deny themselves all the other awesome games
This game is so freaking hard and that for frustrating. I never managed to play it through.
@TwilightAngel
The Nintendo fanboy butthurt is strong with this one.
What's Fallout like on the Wii U again?
Oh, and per this article, it's nice to see these game revived. I loved the hell out of them back in the day on the SNES, even with their wildly unbalanced difficulty curve and frequently awkward combat. Seeing the Star Wars logo and story crawl appear on-screen like the movies, but for a video game--that made teen-aged me pretty damn giddy.
@Quorthon Fallout 4? It plays pretty great on a PC. How does it play on your welfare consoles? Pretty great as well? And you should be the last person to be calling someone a fanboy @Quorthon last person.
This just serves as a great example of why Nintendo's VC service has never been all it could be. The Wii version was just pathetic with very few games having ANY changes from their original releases. The Wii U added save states and off-TV play, and nothing else. Nintendo should be updating these games with modern features to make them more appealing.
@TwilightAngel
I have to comment here, fully knowing that you'll probably reply with something belligerent, given the history of this thread, but nonetheless:
Your list, as pointed out by @ReigningSemtex only shows how the PS4 has a larger install base than the Xbox One. What you're trying to prove is damn near impossible, and better yet, is hampered by the fact that the PS4 has almost double the sales of X1. If you doubled the statistics of 3 of your 5 examples, the X1 takes the lead (2 of which by very large margins). Of the remaining two, one of them gets incredibly close to a tie. How does that argument hold any weight whatsoever?
I'm pretty sure I know what you're referencing when you say 360 people went to PS4, but that that also included people switching over from the Wii, and people who did not own a console in the last generation:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2014/08/25/nearly-one-third-of-ps4-owners-switched-from-xbox-360-or-wii/
If that's the statistic you're referencing, it's flawed already.
Therefore, while you are right in some capacity; your assumption that everyone of those 360 owners were "dudebros" as you put it, is an incredibly silly argument, even if it was meant in jest initially. What's even less plausible is that you believe that those people significantly altered that list of games. Altered, yes, but not significantly. Given that the PS4 total grew from a variety of places, and by a variety of players, your argument is incredibly flawed.
@MoonKnight7 ? Odd i never received a notification of your reply to me.
