The Konami drama continues. After rumours that the veteran publisher is leaving AAA development and the confusion surrounding the employment status of Hideo Kojima - its most famous staffer - Konami has recently confirmed that it is shuttering the LA-based studio responsible for Metal Gear Online, which recently launched alongside the critically and commercially successful Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
All of this might lead you to assume that the Metal Gear franchise is dead in the water, but in a recent interview with Nikkei, Konami has been quoted as saying that the production of another instalment in the million-selling series is a matter of "when" rather than "if":
When we start development, a large-scale investment will become necessary.
Konami had previously claimed it was committed to making more Metal Gear games, but this latest statement seems to indicate that wheels are already in motion. Will its legendary creator be involved? Konami still insists that Kojima is "on vacation" and remains a full time employee, but there are reports that his contract expires in December, at which point he is free to leave the company.
Metal Gear began life on the MSX computer, but found fame in the west thanks to the subsequent NES conversion, which Kojima ironically wasn't involved in. Metal Gear Solid on the PlayStation would lift the brand to AAA status, and since then we've seen the series come to the GameCube, Game Boy Color and 3DS.
While the franchise has skipped the Wii U, any future Metal Gear title would have a good chance of coming to the NX, as Nintendo's new system is rumoured to offer power similar to that of the PS4 and Xbox One.

mgs5 was amazing. probably my second favourite game of all time (after metal gear solid). but konami played us like a damn fiddle!
Ha! Good luck,Konami
Of course Metal Gear isn't dead. They've already started work on Metal Gear Pachinko machines.
@6ch6ris6 Easily my favourite game of this current console generation. It actually makes me sad to think that we may never see another "true" Metal Gear game.
Err.. Then MGS is likely over to me. Just like Silent Hill.
Unless Mr Kojima was secretly not the head behind it.
When Konami starts their confirmation of a new entry to the only IP that wasn't violently butchered by them with a "large-scale investment" as a necessity, it's pretty obvious they haven't learned a goddamn thing.
Ugh. "When we start development, a large-scale investment will become necessary." So, what you mean to say, Konami, is that you think after all the crap you pulled people are going to give you money to kickstart a game that might not even involve Kojima (who by the way is prone to excessively pulverise budgets and has had enough of the franchise for quite some time).
...I don't think so. I hope they'll try and fail.
Well, at least they have the guts to go on without the franchise's creator, unlike a certain [cough]CAP[cough]company.
How bout u stop right there konami. #HittheLever
I was gonna ask why this is Nintendo news, but then I guess there is that inevitable "hope". the series never interested me in the least, but I guess all the "controversy" with Kojima has made MGS news more interesting.
MGSV is one of the reasons I'm considering getting a PS4, which will take second place next to my Wii U, but if Konami can port it to the NX then that would be fab...and bye bye PS4.
That last sentence...
The Wii U had a power level in the range of the PS3 & 360, yet look what happened to the few AAA ports it received.
Metal Gear Pachinko!
I'm only interested if the next metal gear is coming too the NX.
@AlexSora89 Idk man after all the drama surrounding Mighty No.9 I question if Capcom was on the right all along
@Dakt You mean how the game is incomplete? We all know that and is still an awesome game, just imagine the final product
MGSV is a masterpiece that sits proudly among the other 6 main games. I think it should really be ended if Kojima isn't going to make it because only he knows what the hell is going on in the story. There don't seem to be any loose ends though unless they make a game set after Guns of the Patriots. Or I suppose they could make another prequel explaining Les Enfants Terribles a bit more.
All I read was the title, and all i have to say is "bring back David Hayter and don't fffff...screw it up.. Also, good luck! Cuz you'll need it without Mr Konami, I mean Kojima.."
Who in the world other than Hideo Kojima could write a Metal Gear game that Metal Gear fans would want to play?
I farted once on the set of Blue lagoon...
@Pod I said the same thing about the Final Fantasy series, but apart from the FF13 series being milked to high heaven, it was doing really well. I'm sure enough people there can figure it out, and hire talented people. It is MGS after all.
@MarvinTheMartian I wish they'd do that, but it won't happen... Unless NX sells like hotcakes.
Why is this news on here? I thought I accidentally clicked on pushsquare by accident...
That already sounds like a crash course.
I personally think MGS5 is a good looking crap.
Let me guess: Is it a pachinko machine?
MGSV was bad, it already tainted the good name of Metal Gear Solid. I'm not sure how much of the blame can be placed on Konami, and how much on Kojima. But one thing is for sure, Kojima doesn't get off scot-free. No doubt he is partly responsible for the game being the disaster it was.
So I say go for it, make a new game. At worst, we get another terrible game like MGSV, and at that point who cares. The series is already ruined from MGSV. And at best, we get a great game that brings MGS back to its roots, since Kojima lost his way.
@Dakt agreed, completely.
I'm all for giving a new director a shot to remake the original Metal Gear. A young Solid Snake kicking ass, infiltrating buildings instead of little encampments in an "open world", and actual boss fights with characters with their own personality and gimmicks.
Kojima became the George Lucas of gaming: he didn't understand what made Metal Gear good.
i am still absoloutely speachless that some people think mgs5 is bad. wth?! everyone complaining about the recycled missions in the second chapter: YOU DONT HAVE TO PLAY THEM! they are completely optional.
and yes it is sad that one mission was never finished but it would not have changed the ending much. yes i saw the cut material on youtube
I have doubts that the next Metal Gear will come to the PS4 and XB1 (or their successors), let alone a Nintendo system. #HitTheLever
MGS 6: Operation Pachinko anyone?
Seeing how Hideo meant the series to be a deconstruction of the series (see: Metal Gear Solid 1 and Metal Gear Solid 2), if Hideo leaves, this phenomenon would be an ultimate deconstruction.
@Iceclimbers
Wrong lever Kronk!
Learn the incredible backstory of Solidus Snake in Metal Gear Pachinko: Pachinko Pachinks
@6ch6ris6 anything that's as successful, highly regarded and critically acclaimed as MGSV is always going to have a small vocal minority who push the other way just because.... Sure the game has problems but was still incredible despite them which says a lot in itself.. I've over 120 hours put in now and still playing it trying to s rank all missions. Not sure why the article is here though, not like we'll ever see another main series title on Nintendo hardware
Nintendo Life: "But this latest statement seems to indicate that wheels are already in motion".
Not at all, Konami is ambiguously saying that it's not that easy for a new Metal Gear Solid game appearing any time soon.
Ah yes, Metal Gear Mobile. Truly the most anticipated installment.
No Kojima. No Metal Gear. Konami better get their crud together. I'm sick of it all.
@6ch6ris6
I see what you did there... Lol!
@Link41x Any excuse to mention everyone's favourite 2 letters at the moment.
NX!
No Kojima, no sucess. Simple math really.
I'm confused, why is this on a Nintendo site? You guys haven't gotten a MGS game since the beginning of the 3ds' life, and I really doubt you'll ever see another mgs ever again
@hYdeks any 3rd party series that has had some history on Nintendo platforms can be talked about on this site in case there is a chance a future installment comes to Nintendo systems
So, they are planning on how to NOT make it a disappointment?
MGS6 Pachinko...
Metal gear 5 is awesome. A favourite of mine over the last few years, even on my rather janky 360
@hYdeks Because Hideo Kojima also made games other than Metal Gear Solid.
I doubt this really surprises anyone. Metal Gear is too big of a franchise for Konami to let die. As for Hideo Kojima, I'm sure he will find great success no matter what he decides to do next in this new phase of his life. Hopefully he will continue making quality games like he always has.
I am already planning on not buying the next Metal Gear. I have played every metal gear to date with the exception of Rising, but Kojima is Metal Gear. I cannot imagine what it would be like without him, nor do I want to.
Metal Gear for smart devices ? But without Kojima it doesn't matter where ...
@Pod
Kojima wasn't really involved with Revengence, and it was an excellent game.
@Ps4all
Make it a point to get Rising. It was fun.
Metal Gear Go: A free to play Runner with micro-transactions for mobile, you heard it here first!
"While the franchise has skipped the Wii U, any future Metal Gear title would have a good chance of coming to the NX, as Nintendo's new system is rumoured to offer power similar to that of the PS4 and Xbox One."
Haha. No.
Haha this is funny. A metal gear article on a Nintendo site? Come on, no developers want anything to do with the Wii u, it's a turd.
I predict in ten years we'll look at Konami's Metal Gear Solid V the same way we look at Capcom's Resident Evil 4: where the series peaked before a long spiral of increasingly mediocre sequels.
@SupremeAllah I'll have to check it out. Its been on sale a few times on steam and the Mac store.
Metal gear solid without kojima is likely to be a completely different game, I hope they hd remaster twin snakes then I will be happy I probably won't buy Konamis vision for future mgs titles
Without Kojima's consent, Phantom Pain is the last game in the Metal Gear franchise that will ever exist in my eyes.
MGSV was a great game, regardless of the poor chapter 2 part. However, it has many flaws that will hold it back from Goty status. The main problems are that it's too grindy and wastes a lot of the players time waiting for cooldowns. It lacks the series' number of memorable boss fights. And after a while, it all starts to become very repetitive and you'll basically just use the same sort of weapons depending on Stealth or lethal situations, lessening the need for emergent gameplay. Also there's a distinct lack of memorable interiors, and there's no moment that ever tops the grandiose opening act in tbe Hospital. In regards to the story's twist, it felt like an afterthought and did little to bridge the gap that explains Big Boss and Outer Heaven; it feels like, once again, we have to wait for another game that explains that stuff.
Hopefully we'll SURVIVE this one.
I'm sure Konami would never betray us in a manner like I don't know making us buy additional save slots?
