A new firmware update is available for the 3DS and as you may have anticipated, it offers stability and not a great deal else.
Ver. 10.3.0-28 should be ready to download to your console now, and adds even more stability to what surely has to be the most stable piece of gaming hardware on the face of the planet.
In case you don't believe us, here are the update notes:
Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience.
Let us know if you spot anything other than sweet, sweet stability in this new update.

MORE STABILITY?!?
Good, I needed my fix.
I don't think I can handle the stability for much longer...
Inb4 Ironhax got patched for good
My 3DS is so stable, is literally just like the pic up there: a rock.
(Is not broken just so you would know. But you get the gist.)

It appears that Nintendo has updated the eShop application's netcode, so that an update is actually required to use the eShop now, instead of it being spoofable.
Homebrew is out of question now. They're patching every single entry point.
@rushiosan
There's no patch for Cubic Ninja and Ocarina of Time yet though. Which is suprising seeing as OoT is first party.
@Damo It is 10.3.0-28U. Not 10.2.0-28U

I felt a deja vu, like if I had traveled in time back to October 19th.
@Blathers
Options currently are:
That said, I have OoT but I definitely won't risk my perfect Master Quest save data to run a homebrew. The more convenient entry points (browser, tube, ironfall) are now patched...
I love how with all these stability updates they don't even bother with removing the dead Nintendo Zone app.
@rushiosan
Where'd you pull that number from? Cubic Ninja is only selling around the 60-70 dollar mark.
Anyway, anyone who is into homebrew should have the intuition not to install these optional updates. (inb4 Nintendo makes it so you can't start up your system without updating)
@brewsky I still receive new stuff whenever I pass by a Nintendo Zone in the UK, and the Zone in my local GAME is currently distributing an Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer event you can only get from Nintendo Zones. No idea how the situation is in Japan or North America, but the application is hardly dead in at least one territory. Pointless? Maybe. Never really exploited to its full potential? Definitely.
This thing updates almost as much as a 360
@tudsworth there are still distributions from them occasionally, but in NA the service is discontinued for the app.
@Blathers Depends on where you look, I have seen it for $70-150 on eBay in the past month. Outside NA, prices get even more ridiculous.
These updates aren't "optional" at all. You can't access eShop without updating. Which means all the new DLC (such as SSB and Pokémon distributions) are tied to the newest software version. Between that and eShop, I definitely can't stay on the homebrew side. There's no safe entry point yet and I doubt there will ever be.
@tudsworth No, no. The actual Zones are fully functional, and the distributions are still occurring. But there's a Nintendo Zone app on the 3DS that is completely unusable now. Try booting it up.
EDIT: Perhaps it's only for North America, but the point remains still.
Very apt rock pick.
@rushiosan
"I have seen it for $70-150 on eBay in the past month
Just because you see something listed for $5000 on ebay doesn't mean you have to buy it at that price nor that's how much it's worth. It's commonly known that it's sold mostly around the 60-70 dollar mark and people won't buy it if it goes higher, unless availability takes a sharp decline.
"You can't access eShop without updating. "
You could, but this update (and obviously a server-side fix as well) has (at least temporarily) removed the ability to do this.
With this much stability, I bet my 3DS could catch me if I were to trip.
So much stability that the universe will collapse and and mix until it stretches out again to being stable.
Bethesda could use some of that stability right now.
@Blathers can't you just install the cia and then launch it from an updated emuNAND?
I'm starting to wonder how unstable this system was at launch...
All buildings should be replaced with 3DSs to prevent collapses.
Can we not get stability downgrade? I don't think my 3DS can take much more of this.
My 3ds is so stable that a horse moved in.
Wrong console, but this is the closest gif I can find for this situation:
Now you're playing with Stability
'SUPER' STABILITY!!
XD
I get these kinds of articles are "tradition" by this point, and while silly beyond measure I still laugh at both it and the comments to follow.
The only thing i wonder is when will the NL writters will go out of stability puns
So, have they fixed the horrrible load times for the Home menu on first boot which the previous update introduced?
(Also: pretty sure they can't patch the Cubic Ninja exploit out without rendering the game unplayable).
this is getting ridicoules...is somebody counting this?must be 10 updates a year or more...its insane...
Good to hear, all this stability is really calming.
My 3DS is now standing on it's own now, it's amazingly stable.
My 3DS is now so stable it retired. Thanks Nintendo =_=
My 3ds is so solid we play, 3ds, paper, scissors;)
My 3DS can't handle this amount of stability!
So, as it turns out this update has blocked any Nintendo Network ID based services from connecting if your firmware is not on version 10.
v9.9 or earlier cannot connect to online services at all now, such as Pokémon Shuffle, eShop etc.
Soooooo sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet....
It's so stable it's still region locked sigh.
@Monado_III
I'm not on a pre 9.2 system, but it wouldn't surprise me if it were possible to install the latest version of eShop via a CIA.
What I was referring to was HANS's firmware spoofing that allowed access to the eShop by ignoring the firmware version checks.
Just in time. Chibi Robo Zip Lash froze on me last night. This additional stability is welcome.
I'm sure it's just stability, but wouldn't Nintendo also need to update to allow for the new Nintendo Badge Arcade to work with the existing theme system?
The music player crashes less.
I hope it's getting more stable. I thought to myself, hey this is getting more stable when Binding of Isaac crashed for the millionth time and the 3DS reset itself, but then another stability update later and the 3DS went back to freezing.
...now so stable, I use it to take perfect selfies on rollercoasters...
My 3ds is so stable that when it fell onto the train tracks, it suddenly made the whole train stop! There was NO scratches on it at all!!!!
I have a confession. There was one time where I slipped, and fell onto my hip. However, my 3DS was right there in my pocket, breaking my fall with it's stability. It is still intact, I just needed to send it over to Nintendo's technicians to replace the cracked screens. The stability of the 3DS saves lives, people! IT WILL BECOME THE MOST STABLE FORCE IN THE UNIVERSE!
Looks like I held off too long on downloading Shantae... I'm still on version 9.0. Oh well, hopefully another path will open..
You idiots must be happy about them patching exploits.
