We often share Did You Know Gaming? videos here on Nintendo Life, as they provide stylish video summaries - and sometimes little-known details - on various aspects of the medium.
We thought we'd post the latest video as it tackles an important ongoing subject here on NL - amiibo. The little toys are always a hot topic, and so this video provides a reminder of some of its history and origins; those that have followed the range closely will likely already know these details, but it's a good watch nevertheless.
Check it out below and let us know what you think.

When you sell 20 times more than your highest expectations, of course you will have massive stock shortage.
Another example is the Fallout 4 special edition Pip Boy holder.
Just not sure if I should open my Pac-Man, Mega Man, and Sonic amiibo for Mario Maker. Don't know how hard they are to unlock traditionally.
@Genesaur I suggest you leave them as they are. Get the full Mario Maker experience. Get your money's worth with Mario Maker.
I love collecting Amiibo, but Mario Maker is the first game where I actually feel like the entire collection is worth having (from a content standpoint). There's been games where I was glad I had this Amiibo or that, but with Mario Maker I'm glad to have them all.
It's quite a shame that the Skull Kid amiibo never came to be.
@Genesaur @Captain_Gonru
Eh... I'm not really sure. I used my personal Amiibo to do the unlocks so I can't really say.
I guess maybe try it out and see? If it doesn't work, can always delete the level right?
@JaxonH @Captain_Gonru @BarryDunne Yeah, that's what my kids want to know too. They've scanned in our 5 amino and there's a screen in the game that shows which amino you have unlocked, but they can't find a way to get the skins in the boxes without scanning in the amino each time. We did finally decide you could copy and paste each box once a skin is in it, but that's as far as we got. Surely there must be some way to at least see that screen with your collection on it that we haven't found yet.
And I'm OK with needing to scan in your own amiibo to use the skin, but once you scan it in once you should be able to drag and drop it from the collection screen.
@rjejr
Once you unlock power ups (leaf, cape, propeller hat, mystery mushroom) your scanned amiibo AUTOMATICLY unlock in the mystery mushroom, forever.
Keep in mind it only works in the SMB 8-bit style, not the other 3. And 8-bit Classic Mario must be scanned in each time. All the others are permanent unlocks
@JaxonH -"Keep in mind it only works in the SMB 8-bit style"
Well that explains it. They make everything in NSMBU. Occasionally they'll change it to one of the older versions for some variety, but I always see them in the modern look. I'll let them know, thanks.
Wait, does that mean the skins only work in 8-bit mode, not the other 3? Would have to file that under "Nintendo logic". Make a game w/ 4 graphic styles, have the $13 amiibo only work in 1 of the 4. Oh well, maybe they can sell the skins for the other styles for 25 cents each.
@rjejr you also need to click on a mystery mushroom to pick which unlocked skin to use, or you can keep it random if you don't change it.
Another interesting video from the Did You Know Gaming Team, well done! Maybe it's just me being overly critical of Nintendo's mish mash direction of recent years, but it seems to highlight how Nintendo still don't fully grasp the concept of forward planning with their products. Stock shortages, limited functionality, already attempting to swap out (or at least substitute) figures with cards etc. Nintendo seem to run with ideas on a whim when instead, perhaps some long term strategies would best be employed.
[Flame Shield Activated]
@BarryDunne You can. Just tap the mystery mushroom.
@Genesaur You have to beat 8 or 16 levels for a chance to unlock one of 100 costumes. I would say open them, they look better out of box anyway.
@MadAdam81 Thanks, finally figured it out last night. Though it seemed convoluted enough that it probably won't come easy to me for awhile, but knowing that I can do it means Ill figure it out when I want to do it. And now my wife can take her Princes Peach amiibo to her job and proudly display it on her desk where it belongs.
I currently have 37 amiibo. I planned to buy two. Nintendo clearly did something right.
