For quite some time a group of dedicated fans have been working on Mother 4, an unofficial sequel for the iconic series that'll be free on PC. It's been a labour of love for the volunteers concerned, going past its planned 2014 arrival but evidently still progressing well; despite plenty of publicity in the past year it's been left alone by Nintendo, too.
While we're still awaiting a release date, the development team has released a new video for the game's 'Attract Mode'; this references arcades in a bygone era that would essentially rattle through a sizzle reel of game footage between plays to tempt you in. The new video, as a result, has been given a spoiler warning by the developers due to the fact it shows some new locations.
This project has certainly come a long way, and you can even view this new video in full HD and 60fps.

Cool!
I'm surprised with the amount of effort they put in this game!
Looking forward to this. Wonder if it'll live up to the hype
Now if only Nintendo could be dedicated to such awesome franchises...
It's a shame that it won't be coming out in June, but if they need more time to finish the game, I understand.
....It would be cool if Nintendo would take this and put it on the Wii U or something...ah well. lol
I don't care how good or bad it is it's free. I'll be downloading it.
Gosh, can't wait for this darned game.
This project looks AMAZING - but I can't help but wish that these guys would name it something other than Mother 4. I love MOTHER and this game looks amazing; I don't have anything against fan projects. It's just that if they branded it as something else, while still keeping the assets, the developers could claim it as their own. Because they choose to call it Mother 4, they exist in a legal gray area and can never profit from all of their hard word, and they can never claim the game as 100% their own. They also stand at risk of a C&D. Best of luck to all involved; the project looks amazing.
Looks awesome!
Amazing!
Unfortunately, Nintendo usually waits til a fan game is near completion before throwing in a CEASE AND DESIST. They take sick pleasure in obliterating the care and love fans have for their games (in my mind at least; makes a whole lot more sense than Nintendo being paranoid of fan games degrading the value of their franchises or taking the limelight from them, which is a hilarious notion).
Funny enough, the whole Mother franchise never really got me at all, but this game looks very interesting!
This looks amazing. I can't wait for this.
The game itself might look great, but I doubt the music will be able to come close to that of the original 3...
@Collinhall I definitely agree. I wish they'd name it something else and, who knows, release it on Wii U and 3DS.
These bright, colorful, and clean visuals definetly look like something Nintendo would do if they ever did a mother 4.
Guess I better finish Earthbound. That game is LOOONNNNG.
Crazy E3 prediction time!
I predict that Nintendo will announce that this fan project will be officially endorced and released on Wii U! (Not)
I don't think Nintendo will promote it.
If anything, it may just discourage Nintendo from making a mother 4 entirely due to the fan demand this has. This is a free PC release.. The big N has no business with them.
I'm kinda more excited about playing this than almost any other upcoming game out there at the moment. Mother 3 is pretty much one of the greatest game experiences I've ever had. So relevant even today, in fact more today than ever, powerful, compelling, epic, at times funny and at other times sad, and genuinely fun. It's a true masterpiece and certified classic imo, and hey; I actually really love the visuals in this game
I just hope Nintendo doesn't try to put a stop the development of this game simply because it's using the Mother name and reuses a few of the characters from previous Mother games. If it does try to stop this game then I would appeal to the developers to "accidentally" leak it anyway and f**k Nintendo. That's how strongly I feel about what these guys are doing here and how angry I would be at Nintendo for even trying to say anything about it, when it's shown the Mother series so much less love than it rightfully deserves.
PS. Yeah, it's sad it's delayed again but def don't rush it just to appease us desperate fans because this is looking potentially brilliant and I personally am happy to wait a little longer if that increases the chances of it actually being so. I mean I don't see how some indie dudes can beat or even match Nintendo at its own game, in terms of making a Mother game that's up there with Mother 3, but by God it would be stunning if they actually pulled it off—and so far, everything they've shown has been kinda up there!
So hyped!
I stil wish nintendo would bring this series to the wii u, as a full fledged 3d game.
@Moshugan Well, if the game is actually as good as what's been shown thus far—I mean if it's actually up there with the likes of Earthbound and Mother 3—then it would be a very smart Nintendo that did that imo. I'm not sure Nintendo is that smart in that kind of way however, sadly.
@Collinhall The development team refuses to accept donations or payments of any kind, it's not that they don't care about the money, Mother 4 is a labour of love and they don't intend to make any profit out of it.
@Cainenghis I think it's also largely because it kinda circumvents potential legal issues with Nintendo claiming copyright or whatever, like it does with monetised YouTube videos of its games for example, because being entirely free and made basically completely from scratch, it can be considered a transformative work of art that's almost certainly protected under Fair Use law. Once these guys charge a single penny however then everything changes; seeing as it does use the Mother name and a small selection of characters from previous games will be in this game too. So they're just being very smart about it.
Just started playing Earthbound on VC and its great. I hope fans don't take this game too seriously, and it needs a different name. Even I kinda want this thing taken since its not made by Nintendo.
From the looks of that trailer it doesn't seem to have any graphics or music from the other 3 Mother games.
Yes, the style is very similar, but that's it.
They should change the name and any copyrighted assets (if there are any), and put it on the eShop.
@AVahne Shigesato Itoi owns the property afaik, so it's all up to him.
I still think its sad that fans have to make a new Mother. Nintendo, you better give us more Earthbound this E3! I hope that robot chicken thing was a hint.
Earthbound 20th anniversary trilogy leading up to Mother 4, the official Nintendo version. -puppy eyes-
@AyeHaley I doubt we'll get an official Mother 4, but I'll more than gladly take an Earthbound trilogy collection. I've got this itching feeling, that this is the year Mother 3 is localized. I hope this itching feeling isn't wrong.
They should put this on a GBA cart and sell it on ebay!
I would be a lot more interested in this if it wasn't branded as a Mother sequel, but a tribute to the mother series/independent game. As it is, I can't help but feel like I'm reading a fan fic when I take this game seriously, and that's not really my thing.
I say let the Mother series live or die as it is, and honor it by publishing an actual game that serves as a spiritual successor/tribute. I'd happily pay for that. Don't honor it by attempting to turn your fan fic into canon.
But that's just me! To each their own. They aren't hurting anyone by doing it.
Finally the comment section is good this time around.
Last time, people were derping around :hurr durr this isnt official, ninty plz taek it d0wn" or "it looks horrible"
Anyway, the trailer is nice. Shows how much dedication the Mother series fans are.
I can't wait for this game!! It's my most anticipated game this year, no doubt! Of course, E3 MIGHT change my mind on that, but nevertheless, I'm pumped for this game and have been since 2010.
@KnightRider666
lol im sure someone is already planning that
Nice stuff.
