Another week begins, and as usual we have the Nintendo Download Update for Europe to get us started. This week seems to have a pretty strong line-up, with three excellent retro experiences accompanying a retro-style Nindie release on the Wii U. A delayed retail title also lands on the home console, while the 3DS highlight comes with a Japanese import from Atlus, while the portable also has a lot of discounts. Let's get to the details.
Wii U eShop
Roving Rogue (Padaone Games, €7.99 / £7.19) - This joins the run of retro-styled platformers on the Wii U, in this case including a co-op experience with plenty of running, jumping and teleporting. With 42 levels this promises much, and we'll see whether it hits its targets or goes rogue in our review.
Wii U Virtual Console
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo, €9.99 / £8.99) - Widely acknowledged as one of the finest games of all time, this Nintendo 64 classic makes its way to the Wii U; the iconic adventure title has previously had re-releases on the GameCube and Wii Virtual Console, in addition to its 3DS remaster. A true great in its genre, we gave this a perfect score in our Wii Virtual Console review back in 2007. This is the European version of the game with corrected aspect ratio.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon (Nintendo, €9.99 / £8.99) - The first entry in the strategy series on DS, and it's also a remake of the very first NES game that didn't make it to the West. Another member of the rich RPG and strategy tradition on the last-gen handheld, we gave this a solid recommendation in our original Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon review.
Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising (Nintendo, €6.99 / £6.29) - This gives us our Game Boy Advance fix for the week, continuing Intelligent Systems' excellent warfare strategy series. Picking up directly from the first game, this entry introduces new units and strategies into the formula; we'll get onto the battlefield to bring you a review.
Wii U Retail Download
LEGO Jurassic World (WB Games, €49.99/ £34.99) - The delay to this Wii U release in Europe was never fully explained beyond 'supply' issues from retailers, but in any case the HD iteration of this title arrives on the eShop on 30th June in mainland Europe and 3rd July in the UK.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
SDK Paint (HullBreach Studios, €3.39 / £2.99 until 9th July, normally €4.49 / £3.99)
Ittle Dew (Ludosity, €4.99 / £4.49 until 30th July, normally €9.99 / £8.99)
3DS eShop
Shingeki no Kyojin: Humanity in Chains (Atlus, €29.99 / £34.99) - Better known as Attack on Titan: Humanity in Chains, this retail title comes to Europe as an eShop-only release, though the localisation is certainly great news for fans of the hit anime show. This surreal title has some exciting combat yet also has its shares of niggles and rough edges; nevertheless we gave it a recommendation in our comprehensive Attack on Titan: Humanity in Chains review.
Mighty Gunvolt (Inti Creates, €3.49 / £3.19) - This is a retro-styled throwback with simple run and gun gameplay reminiscent of a certain Capcom franchise. Available for free with Azure Striker Gunvolt until 2nd July, this is the less expensive option for those that only want this smaller release; we gave it a strong recommendation in our Mighty Gunvolt review.
Fantasy Pirates (EnjoyUp Games, €1.99 / £1.99) - Another entry from the prolific Spanish publisher / developer, this is a 15-stage adventure in which you navigate your pirate boat with 360-degree movement to find treasure and sink rivals; it's also promising a 1 vs. 1 online mode. We'll take to the seas for a review.
Karous -The Beast of Re:Eden- (CIRCLE Entertainment, €5.99 / £4.79) - A vertically scrolling shmup out of Japan, this puts you in charge of a mech in which you obliterate many waves of enemies across plenty of levels. Unfortunately its attempts at plot fall short and are only backed up by mediocre gameplay; you can get the full lowdown in our Karous -The Beast of Re:Eden- review.
3DS Retail Downloads
The Smurfs (Ubisoft, €19.99 / £17.99)
Paddington: Adventures in London (Anuman, €29.99 / £24.99)

Totally getting Attack on Titan!
Shadow Dragon! That game is impossible to get physically for a reasonable price. I'll take it!
Holy crap, THREE virtual console titles?! that's unheard of! But oh no, OoC is the European version? (the version i already own multiple copies of?) Then I'm good.
Will probably get Fire Emblem!
Ocarina of Time, Shadow Dragon and Advance Wars 2. Nice to see that Nintendo's finally releasing rare Fire Emblem games (there's 3 of them namely Shadow Dragon, Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn)!
Attack on Titan got delayed so much that I don't care enough anymore to give up 30 euros.
Sweet that they're putting Shadow Dragon on the VC. I played that one max difficulty - Lunatic 5 Stars I believe. It was quite the ride. The online was fun, too... Hopefully they'll bring that back in Fates.
Best week for a while. I'll be upgrading Ocarina of Time and buying Advance Wars 2. I've already got Shadow Dragon (it's the least rare of the FE games, available for about £15 used) but happy they're putting it up, as maybe if we ever do get Cube games, they'll put up Path of Radiance.
Man wish it was the 2nd of June again then I could celebrate my birthday again!!!... But for me advance wars and maybe fire emblem, defo never alone and Jurassic world!
Shadow Dragon and AW 2 for sure.
@Peach64 I disagree about the least rare part, ebay and such are flooded with bootleg versions of the game which are mostly at those lower prices.
Don't you mean 2nd JULY? Not 2nd June?
Roving rogue if it reviews well, Fire Emblem and Advance Wars.
Why do they bring OoT again? The best one was on 3DS and now on the U? They are just blood thirsty money hungry grabbing vampires.
Shadow Dragon yes yes YES!!!
I'll get Ittle Dew, it's one of the games I've been meaning to play and support.
Wow what a great selection!
@Kami2Kami Why? Look at the poll results. People want it.
Fantastic week for the WiiU VC, I own both OOT and FE:SD but I'll be getting them again, along with Advance Wars 2 which I've never played!
50hz OoT? That's under 20 visual frames per second. I'll stick to my Japanese VC copy.
Hmm, tempted by Karous but reciew kinda dissuades me.
Want Attack on Titan but can't pay that amount for a digital only title, no matter how niche. Will grab it when on sale.
May pick up Phoenix Wright.
All this talk about Bootleg Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon has me worried. Bought mine as a 2nd hand EU copy from my friends' store for a tenner. Will check when I get home.
No Sonic Advance? Grrrrrr!
Advance Wars 2! Falcon YES!
50hz Pal JUNK 2015 No way Nintendo im rolling on by.
Nothing for me this week. I have OoT on 3ds, still need to play it along with MM
Ocarina is the PAL version? dammit
Ocarina is the PAL version? Dammit its very easy to notice 50hz on the n64 zeldas
Should be noted that Shadow Dragon is one of the weaker Fire Emblems (Weak story and characters, odd design choices, lacking stage design most of the time, only seize missions) and i would recommend Fire Emblem (the seventh game) for GBA instead if you don't already have it.
If only every week of the Virtual Console was that strong...
Wow, that AoT price. Especially when you consider the EUR price comes out as £21.19 when converted...
One thing that I've been wondering lately. What's with all the DS games being ported to the Wii U eShop but not the 3DS? 3DS plays physical DS titles, so surely it would be easy to do? There have been several games put on there recently I would happily pick up if they made them available on both, and it just seems a really strange decision not to!
I started Ocarina Of Time on Gamecube yesterday after the news that it was hitting VC, so I think I'll stick with that........although off screen play is nice.....hmmm.....
Getting Lego Jurassic World with my Xbone later this week, which I can't wait to try
"This is the European version of the game with corrected aspect ratio."
Pass. The PAL version is so slow it's like running everywhere with the Iron Boots on.
Changed headline to 2nd July. I've had a stern word with myself for this error.
@RainbowGazelle I was able to get it for $20 - in the US - I know it is different here - but I'm gonna be buying it again - maybe Radiant Dawn will get rereleased on the eShop
Fire Emblem on the big screen and Karous on 3ds for me, with Advance Wars on my watch list for a later date as I've still not finished the first one!
Wow, that's actually impressive, AW2 and FE, didn't expect to see those ... I wonder when (and if =( ) those will ever come to NA. Sacred Stones took for ages to show up over here ....
I will buy Doodle Jump Adventures, because why not...
I dont understand all the love and perfect scores for Ocarina and other Zelda games. My wife, my friend, my kids and I all got really bored within a few hours. The story is decent but nothing special, the combat is weak, the platforming is more annoying than Kingdom Hearts and the constant lengthy fetch quests to pad the game out bores me really quick.
@MadAdam81 How is the platforming annoying if there actually isn't really any? You cannot even jump.
I am only halfway in, but cannot remember any fetch quest so far or at least no lenghty ones? What are you referring too.
I thought the game was overrated too, but when I started playing I felt the magic! Maybe it still is overrated, but I love it a lot. I am a huge sucker for the Zelda characters and design.
@Tiefseemiez
The only 'fetch quests' in OoT I can think of are:
-Mask Salesmen stuff that can lead to a few pieces of heart
-Biggoron Sword side quest that is the lengthiest in the game
-Bottle challenges, such as the chickens, Big Poe hunt, etc.
-Gold Skulltula hunt (first 50 unlock all the prizes except one)
No "!" for the eshop titles announced in the header !!! Nintendo is officially doomed !
Just Fire Emblem for me, though I may end up buying the first Advance Wars, and I'll mull over Ocarina of Time. I have the 3DS version so I don't need to play it again soon, but it might be nice to see it in original graphics.
£8.99 is fairly expensive though. You could get 1000 Wii Points for £7, and get the Wii U cross promotion for £.99 and save a pound if you're sneaky
@Sanicranfast
Okay, well, I skipped a lot of the sidequests, which I regretted immediately after I had to fight Phantom Ganondorf in the forest temple with only 5 or 6 hearts. Since I lost my fairies before and didn't get a refill, it was a short battle indeed.
But I did not realise, that I could not do them anymore when I was adult, though this should have been pretty obvious.
@Tiefseemiez Of course also you can't return to being a child until you've beaten the Forest Temple.
Oh man, I'm conflicted about Attack On Titan. It's an amazing show but a so-so game for £35? I'm not sure the price is right
@Grumblevolcano Oh you get to transform back right afterwards? That gives me the will to try this again. I kinda dropped the game after I realised the mess I was in. ^^
I'm getting OoT, haven't played it in ages and the 50hz doesn't bother me for the older games
Still waiting for Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town...
No OOT for me. I stay with the 3DS version. About Fire Emblem and Advance Wars 2, I still have the other Fire Emblem and the first Advance Wars to launch on 3DS and Wii U VC.
When will I have spare time ?
I'll get Attack on Titan later, right now I'm saving for the limited edition of Rodea the sky soldier,
@Tiefseemiez There's a fair amount of platforming with auto-jump, but all of Majora and most of the later games were just fetch quests. Get this mask! Get me the shovel so i can get you the jar which you can trade for the canned food to trade for the bow to trade for the lens to get the thing to get the thing to get your boomerang.
And so on.
might get fire emblem ds(to keep me occupied for fates) , OoT N64 and/or attack on titan 3ds!
and i got mighty gunvolt already thank to the azure striker gunvolt promontion lol!
@Tops it will
@kocazerzei
I've got the retail version, it's nothing special.
@russellohh Hmmm, well I do not really consider it platforming, when you basically just have to walk towards a gap in the floor to jump over it. As a jump'n'run hater I actually love that there is hardly any platforming involved in Zelda games.
Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon is so mediocre. The dialogue is so boring and the levels are really repetitive. They should release New Mystery of the Emblem.
Was planning to go for Attack on Titan until i had a look at other critics... Very poor. So no basically.
what a nice surprise. You could have so easily of just added OOT and that would be fine, but Fire Emblem DS AND Advance Wars 2? Very nice.
Of course you know by adding FB DS, you're gonna have fans begging on Miiverse for you to translate the rest of the Japan Only entries in the series, right? XD
OMG 2 awesome GBA/DS games I missed out on!! WOOHOOO
Nothing for me, but the selection seems pretty decent this week
Buying OoT for the Wii U (€1,50 upgrade), even though I'll probably never launch it, since I now prefer playing the 3DS version. But still, it's one of my all time favourite games, so €1,50 is worth it for me to have it on the Wii U main-menu.
Advance wars ocarina upgrade and probably a couple of 3ds discounts for my fiancé she loves jewel games and all those hidden mystery type ones.
Wow, what a great week! I wish it were like this every time...
If I were in Europe, I would definitely be getting Ocarina, Fire Emblem and Advance Wars.
I saw "going rogue" and I thought there would be a surprise announcement of Star Wars: rogue squadron for the VC lol
@Angelic_Lapras_King Roy being in Smash 4 already caused that to happen
Can't believe they have gave us the PAL version again, well I can actually as its Nintendo but still. So that means us Europeans have never got to legally play the optimal version of this masterpiece?Think I will get Advance Wars 2,loved the first one.I want to give Fire Emblem a try, what's the best one I should start with?Preferably one with a tutorial as great as the original Advance Wars.
@OorWullie I think the optimal version to play is the 3DS one.
@RainbowGazelle It will be now. Metroid Prime Trilogy also dropped in price like crazy when they released it on the Wii U.
Don't think I'll be buying OoT for the 6th time...
With the European download update being this good, I expect the NA one to be horrible.
Meanwhile in America...
Meanwhile in America...
Meanwhile in America...
Meanwhile in America...
Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising?
NEO TANKS BBY!
Now all I need on the VC is:
pokes NOA um...we like strategy games too....
It seems like the Snes VC has dried up
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!
Wow! This is the best week for VC I've seen in a LONG time! Ocarina of Time, Shadow Dragon and Days of Ruin.
Man you Europeans hit the motherlode today...
@OorWullie
I think they all have good tutorials from Sacred Stones onward. It's nothing too difficult that you won't be able to figure it out. Fire emblem is actually a fairly simple game to grasp, sort of like chess- easy to learn but difficult to master.
Start with any of them from the GBA onward. Heck, Shadow Dragon would be ironically appropriate seeing as it's a remake of the very first game on NES, with Marth himself.
Hopefully Shadow Dragon comes to NA c:
@JaxonH It's not Days of Ruin, it's Black Hole Rising off the GBA.
@andyg1971
Ya I just realized my mistake a few minutes ago.
Even better if you ask me!
Can Fire Emblem be played using only the touch screen, or do you have to use buttons too?
Okay, I just checked and you can. So thats good. Vertical Game Pad screen it is. It wouldn't have worked well otherwise. The small screen played horizontally would have been to small to play the game.
Ittle dew...have the problems been solved? If so, I might download.
@JaxonH Advance Wars 2 more of the same? Really liked the first one. They didn't go all DK and ramp the enemy AI up to 11 did they, the first 1 was just about perfect, there was 1 fog of war level w/ a lot of enemy tanks I was never able to beat but it wasn't in story mode, I beat the final boss city.
@rjejr
We better get these games come Thursday- I will be extremely disappointed if we get Baby Mamas Cooking Club or something, but no VC
now heres hoping nintendo brings ocarina of time master quest to VC
But USA got Mario&Luigi last week :/
someone: nintendo, eat a snickers
nintendo: why
someone: you don't release a lot game on eshop when you're Hungry:
"nintendo eat a snickers"
someone:better?
nintendo: better!
50hz OoT for me pls... oh wait a sec i don't live in the EU, double wait a sec I got the vastly superior 3DS retail version. $$$ saved.
N64 games two weeks in a row is certainly a pleasant sight to me! Unfortunately not the games I'm looking for. Not interested in Kirby and I never bought Ocarina on the VC due to having the original, Master Quest GCN disc and 3DS remake, so I won't be going back to this. But keep the games coming Nintendo! I need Mario Kart 64 and the Mario Parties.
Oh look, another N64 title North America won't see for about a month. Kudos to Europe though.
@JaxonH Cheers man.I'll check one of them out soon. It's a shame we likely wont ever see a new entry on Wii U,the Gamepad would be perfect for these kind of games too.
Nothing for me, I'm still waiting for the release of Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town on the Virtual Console. The US has it, why not us?
