Splatoon is now just two weeks away, bringing its own blend of colourful anarchy to the Wii U. We've seen plenty of coverage of it, though the mode that gets the least love is Battle Dojo, the local multiplayer option.
Nintendo Minute is keen to resolve that shortcoming, dedicating its latest video to popping balloons and discussing the merits of inverted controls. The second stage also has that rock song which is bizarrely heavy and stands out in the soundtrack - did someone say butt rock?
In any case, this mode shouldn't be dismissed out of hand, as same couch smack talk is always fun. Check it out below and let us know what you think.

I still just want two player co-op online.
@NinjaWaddleDee Yeah, would be great, I'm guessing it doesn't allow guests online because the gamepad is required for online matches. :/
I can't wait until the game is released
This is perhaps the greatest limiting factor of this game...lack of solid local multiplayer. I get that a gamepad is necessary for much of the gameplay...so it turns my mind to Nintendo's best means available for addressing it presently as things stand: make Splatoon available on the New 3DS. Turn it fuctionally into a 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th and 7th local multiplay gamepad option. I feel it has the power to accomplish this and it has the same functionality as a gamepad. Just a pipedream I guess. Still love Splatoon and can't wait for May 29th!
Also, why not address this with LAN. For those with multiple Wii U's or when friends get their Wii U's together. Just trying to work within the confines of what is available to address this one final piece of the awesome puzzle called Splatoon!
i wonder what the reviews would be like
@Jenraux Yeah I know. And I've said this many times before, but I don't know why player two just can't pull up a mini map by pressing a button. Sure they would be gimped, but who cares? I think that would be better than nothing.
Well, these two don't know how to kill rollers dead. Also, 1v1 doesn't look very exciting so far.
@Grafeaux Admittedly, that's a really good idea. And now that you mention it, it's something I'd generally assume to work well with consoles: local LAN multiplayer. And the WiiU would lend itself to the concept exceptionally well, since every player would have their own GamePad to work with.
Hell, the "hosting" WiiU could be used to show some highlight showoffs like Mario Kart 8 does on the fourth splitscreen when only three people are playing (which would also work great as a presentation tool for tournaments and parties).
Why would anybody use roller in a mode thats all about shooting balloons?
So there's no split screen, Gamepad and tv yes? I'm ok w that, just asking.
Wii U Pro controller needs to use the rigth stick for moving the camera and aiming? I know thats an option nline bu tI've never tried it. Not even sure I know how to turn it on.
You know what would be good - if that app that says "DEMO" in big letters on on my Wii U actually let us try out this mode so we can see for ourselves.
Mercy rule is kind of cool.
My wife says these 2 are awful, she'd rather Chuggaconroy do it. Or Sunndie.
"Splat". "Wear a poncho next time." Maybe Nintnedo is trying to get popular w/ the adult crowd?
12:29 is not a "minute". Just saying. Guess it's a pet peeve of mine.
who has pre-ordered splatoon
@candy94 Yep. Getting it day one. Plus I've got the boy and girl inkling amiibos ordered as well. Well, if gamestop doesn't screw up my order that is.
I don't want to pop balloons. I want 4-on-4 system link. Remember how you could link two Xboxes up to each other and do that, two generations ago? Yeah, I do.
The gamepad is NOT required. Use a second stick instead of gyro aiming--one aspect of the gamepad fixed. When you die, it brings up a map menu where you can choose where to jump--done. Now we can have local multiplayer. Thanks Nintendo, please make it happen now.
@BarryDunne and NinjaWaddleDee I have pre-ordered it as well
Hm. Glad this mode looks pretty fun. I really wish I could play more of the game with my wife, but this is better than no mode at all.
Now if it were a split screen on the TV as well as a game pad user allowing for 3 or maybe up to 5 players I could see this mode being a lot of fun! Fingers crossed it's planned in one of the free updates.
So have Nintendo optimised this to run at 60fps or we looking at 30fps
@PinkSpider Superb 1080p 60FPS! There's some videos on youtube showing that. I can't see those, unfortunately, because I refuse to install Google Chrome. At least I still have all my cap footage from the previous Test Fire sessions to go on until the game launches.
I, for one, found this 1 v 1 thing to be better than I expected. I guess I didn't account for the whole mechanic of getting around quicker, hiding, etc. being so important when you are competing to get balloons. After playing turf war and seeing this, though, of course it's important!
In fact, the number of balloons you lose if you get splatted makes this out to be a pretty intense match practicing most of the same skills with a twist that seems just fine. Not quite as frantic as 4 v 4 but with the balloons appearing in groups it does force each player to the same spot over and over.
Could be fun.
@mjc0961 Seriously! How is wii remote aiming not built in?! Nintendo was completely in love with that until recently, and it would be perfect here.
They should've copied the way Black Ops 2 on Wii U does local multiplayer. Popping balloons is pretty dull....
@DerpSandwich @mjc0961 - I'm guessing Wiimote aiming makes the gyro look really really bad and it would be yet another knock on the Gamepad.
If they are going to have a 2-player balloon popping game, since player 2 can't use the Gamepad, and there are no team members to hyper jump to anyway, and you don't need to see how much of the map is covered b/c that is irrelevant in the couch vs, so basically it is a COMPLETELY different game than the online multiplayer (or even the offline single player platformer) then both players should be allowed to use Wiimote and nunchuck. That would actually make it fair.
@Captain_Gonru - We have tickets to 3 Mets games so far, I'm hopeing for 2 out of 3.
@DerpSandwich: For the map, you can jump at any time, not just at spawn. But I'll one up you: Holding - / SELECT brings up a larger semitransparent menu of the minimap that COULD be in the lower lefthand corner, which shows the location of your team on the map. To allow for fast teleporting, UP on the d-pad teleports you to the first teammate, LEFT the second, and RIGHT the third. Not as fast as simply pressing them on the gamepad, but a functional, quick alternative.
I think the elephant in the room here is performance. Nintendo might have been unsatisfied with how the game performed with 4 players locally, so they decided to exclude it. It's easier to exclude something like that in a new IP than other games where it's a key feature, like Mario Kart or Call of Duty. It's a shame, since I'd be satisfied with 30fps for couch coop if it meant I could have it at all.
@masterLEON: Nope. 720p 60fps.

Not that it matters. As the article notes, the art style would have only marginally benefited from 1080p, and the game looks absolutely beautiful regardless.
Splatoon is refreshing for gamers, it should be a blast cant wait. The testfire was a great idea and option make sure you look out for the last one coming up soon.
There was a Nintendo rep demoing Battle Dojo at my local Best Buy today and I got to try out the local multiplayer. BD is basically just like regular deathmatching with the opportunity to score even more points by popping balloons. Online Turf War during the Testfire was way more entertaining.
@candy94 Me! Three copies in fact for our family's 3 Wii U's. Can't wait.
I have only looked into this game a few times because I don't want to spoil anything but man I am so excited for when my pre order arrives.
The wait is starting to get painful.
I cant wait to destroy my kids in this game, gonna be EPIC!!!
