Sega has confirmed that Streets of Rage 2, Gunstar Heroes and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 are making their way to the 3DS eShop.
This trio of Sega Mega Drive / Genesis titles will be joining the steadily-growing ranks of Sega's retro remasters, which already includes the likes of Space Harrier, Out Run, Altered Beast and Fantasy Zone.
Streets of Rage 2 is coming first, with a July release confirmed. It's regarded as the best entry in the franchise, and one of the finest side-scrolling fighters ever made. The sublime Gunstar Heroes - the first game from legendary Japanese studio Treasure - is expected in August, while the excellent Sonic 2 will follow in September.
Sega has also confirmed that Fantasy Zone II hits the eShop on the 16th, while Thunder Blade will be coming next month, on May 14th.
As before, all of the above games will cost $5.99/€4.99/£4.49.

Been smiling since I read "Gunstar Heroes" and haven't stopped since.
Gunstar Heroes?!?!?! YES PLEASE. Here's hoping Toejam and Earl 1+2 are next!
Sonic 2 is much better than Sonic 1 so this is great, but I still prefer the 60Hz GameCube version (Mega Collection).
All three are definite buys.
There's many others I'd love to see get M2 love. Ristar, Comix Zone, Vectorman, Golden Axe, The Ooze, The Super Shinobi, Kid Chameleon, Decap Attack, Alien Soldier, Dynamite Heady... I could go on. The Mega Drive had a ton of classics.
But I think people would go nuts for 3D Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder.
OMG! Those are the games I wanted to come. Best news I have heard in a long time!
Sweet lord almighty... GUNSTAR FREAKING HEROES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's a long 3-month wait...
Edit:
Wait wait wait. I just watched a gameplay on YouTube. OMFG I remember Gunstar Heroes! YES PLEASE!
Finally some heavy hitters!
Well, I guess 3D Sonic 3 is pretty much a given now. I also wasn't 100% sure that Sega would eventually get to these games on the eShop. I'm also glad we won't have to wait until next year like the other waves. Best NEWS I've Read Since, Well the Nintendo Direct. Also "Free" Mewtwo releasing tomorrow put a smug grin on my face! :3
WOWWWWW YESSSSSSS( Heavy Hitters)
all that's left for me now is (shining force 1,2, toejam and earl 1, and Phantasy Star 4)
Sonic 2 is still the Sonic game I like the least out of 1 / 2 / 3+K / CD. (The extra zone Christian Whitehead added was pretty good though).
Gunstar Heroes & Streets of Rage 2 are much better games.
3 of the best games on the Genesis. I am majorly hyped.
Yayness on Sonic 2 finally being confirmed.
Hope they go as far as making Sonic 3 and S&K as 3d classics also but I don't mind if they don't.
I went and bought Sonic Collection on DS recently but I'd still happily buy Sonic 3d classics as they get released.
Sometimes Sega really does what Nintendon't. I'd definitely like to see some Nintendo classics get this sort of treatment. Anyways, I've been waiting for Sonic 2 for a while now, great news.
@EllenJMiller Yeah, would love to see Ristar in 3D!!!
Getting SoR 2 and Gunstar Heroes in this bunch.
Great stuff, count me in for all 3.
Thunder Blade!
Wow, Sonic 2 and Streets of Rage?! Man, I've been waiting for these to be ported all my life!......sarcasm aside, it'd definitely be fun to play Sonic and Gunstar in 3D......I might actually pick up one of these.
Will Sonic 2 run as well as Sonic 1 does? That 3D version is really smooth.
@EllenJMiller I'd give an arm for a proper port of Death Adder. Such a shame the Saturn never got a conversation.
I wonder with 3D Sonic 2 if they will include the hidden palace zone from the iOS version
Oh gosh so excited for gunstar, as well as the other two. These 3D classics are all I play lately. I'm in love with 8/16-bit graphics in 3D. Whoop!
YAY.....OMG....Sonic 2 on 3DS W00t xD
When can we has it? Sonic 2 is my fave
Put a smile to my face for sure, three absolute classics!
The fact that Streets of Rage 2 is in my top 3 home console scrolling beat'em ups and Gunstar Heroes is one of the best games ever made has made me very, very happy. M2 are the best.
Yes! So happy right now!
While those are all pretty much awesome games, I don't really see how 3D benefits any of them. However, I can't recommend Streets of Rage 2 or Gunstar Heroes nearly enough.
If Sega also releases Streets of Rage 3, I'll buy all three.
@Nation Not as good as Christian Whitehead's port (With a real controller).
I got Sonic 1 3D Classics. So I will definitely be downloading Sonic 2 as well.
I'd like to see the physical collection of the Sega Classics make it's way to the west too. Would Nintendo make a 3D Classic of Earthbound?
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Gunstar Heroes. Yummy.
YES YES YES! Have all the 3D classics apart from Ecoo and Altered Beast, these will round out the collection beautifully...
THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!! I really wanted Sonic 2 but Gunstar Heroes and Streets of Rage 2 as well? I hope Sega keeps doing this.
Anyone know if we can do 2-player coop with one copy of the game for Streets of Rage 2?
Nice. Now I can have SoR2 on the go, we'll without having to buy a Sega Nomad and a truckload of batteries.
GJ Sega, GJ! Keep them coming!
I'm going to go ahead and ask an extremely obvious question here: are these "3D Classics" essentially VC games, but with 3D functionality added?
I rarely buy VC releases of games I still own the cartridge of, but I might splurge on Gunstar Heroes just for the convenience factor. I find myself thinking about it and wanting to play it whenever I'm away from home, then it never crosses my mind once I get home, or I'm too lazy to dig out the Genesis.
Rofl at Sega porting 16bit games and Nintendo not
In the immortal words of Hank McCoy:
"OH MY STARS AND GARTERS!"
You mean I get to play Gunstar Heroes?... On my 3DS?... In 3D? AND Sonic 2? AND Streets of Rage 2? This is by far the best serving of Sega Remasters. Pardon me while I mop up all this drool.
@burninmylight
Yes, they're a lot like the 3D Classics line of the NES games on the eShop. But Sega does an EXCELLENT job of porting them. Adding very intuitive GUI save states, button customization, and other handy add ins. Blows the Nintendo Virtual Console games out of the water.
Yay, these 3D Sega releases are some of my favorite "Virtual Console" games on 3DS
Awesome!! These are practically the only titles I really wanted since this range of ports started! I really hope Gunstar Heroes keeps the multiplayer maybe with download play like Super C on the 3DS VC.
These are the three best choices. Up next it would be nice to have Streets of Rage 3, Revenge of Shinobi, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles.
The Genesis was such an excellent system. There's so many classics to add.
@Quorthon Maybe it sidesteps Nintendo not allowing Megadrive VC otherwise. (Although the Nomad was a portable).
@burninmylight Pretty much but you get a choice of which version (e.g Japanese or International - depending on the game they can be quite different i.e Japanese Ecco the Dolphin is significantly easier) and other things depending on the title. (Shinobi III has the 6 button option for example).
I have Sonic 2 on DS andGamecube, but I guess I'm getting it on 3DS too.
@SparkOfSpirit I think some others would more interesting like Vectorman / Ristar / Wonderboy in Monster World etc or more System 16 (Fantasy Zone has done presumably quite a bit of the work).
M2 is awesome! I was worried we wouldn't be getting many more 3d classics. I'll grab them all as soon as they're available.
SEGA does what Nintendon't. Those 3D Classics play fantastic on the 3DS. Still they are somewhat pricy though. You can find Mega Drive game collections on other platforms cheaper.
Anyway I go for a ride on Outrun 3D!
@unrandomsam Of course I'd want Ristar, Monster World IV, and several other games. I was just hoping to get more SoR, Shinobi, and Sonic, since those are my favorite Sega series with OutRun.
@Damo You need that arm to play the game, though!
If I were to trust anyone to port it, it'd be M2. They're good at what they do. And that's an understatement.
I want to see Vectorman 1 + 2 on the 3DS now.
@SparkOfSpirit What I have found particularly good so far is the variety - as long as we get some other lesser expected but good stuff as well I will be happy.
Did anybody else read the name of the article like Ryan Seacrest announces the next American Idol?
Love you M2, LOVE LOVE LOVE. All your games are Day 1 purchases for me. I'm going to need a bigger SD card by the end of the year.
@belmont Yeah like go into financial ruin.
@EllenJMiller They are not perfect though. (Sound particularly they seem to struggle with.)
The Game Over jingle on Gunstar Heroes on the Wii VC is just not right.
D4 Enterprise / Mame / Neo Geo MVS I cannot tell the difference.
M2 I can (The Neo Geo Station ones on PS3) (And whoever does e.g SNK Arcade Classics is even worse than M2).
Great news, now if they would only port General Chaos. Perhaps someone ought to start a petition, er, who's with me?
@EllenJMiller Here's some more...
I'm definitely buying Sonic 2, that game is awesome
3 top games there!!
I may pick up Streets of Rage 2 if it has local co-op. Already own Sonic 2 in many formats.
I'm getting Sonic the Hedgehog 2, no doubt.
I'm a sonic nut, I bet you never knew that.
They just picked the 3 games i wanted, sweet i'm buying all 3
Awesome! Streets of Rage II!
As usual with Sega's 3D Classics I'm going to get all 3 of them!
M2 is doing one hell of a job! Keep it up!
Definitely gonna pick up SoR2 (way better than the first one) and Gunstar Heroes. Now I just need Vectorman 1+2, Decap-Attack, Beyond Oasis, and Kid Chameleon.
Just Gimme Thunder Force 3 and that other racing game that escapes me... What's it called?
Edit: Power Drift!
I'm looking forward to all three of them.
Would get sonic 2 buti own it on my phone but glad to see more 3d classics. Cant wait to see more in the future.
Sonic 3D & Knuckles together next please!
@Pixel-Perfect
nope, sega is doing what nintendont anymore but used to
I'm so glad Sega is still supporting the 3D Classics genre.
if it's not the ios version of Sonic 2 that includes Hidden Palace and a whole buncha other things, then i'll be disappointed.
FINALLY! I skipped the 16-bit era entirely (no SNES or SEGA), but whenever my older brother and I went to our dad's place, we'd play Sonic 2, and I'd play as Tails, since I wasn't as good at video games. So I might not have any nostalgia for a lot of other SEGA Genesis games, the Sonic games, particularly Sonic 2, will always be something I fondly remember!
I do hope M2 will add some way to play the game in 2P mode, as well as allow you to play as Knuckles, as if the Sonic 2 cartridge were connected to the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge.
Nice! Will be picking all three of these up most likely. Now if only they could get on the phone to Konami about a 3D classic of the Rocket Knight Adventures! My favourite MegaDrive game, and still one of my favourite games actually
Not many Megadrive games I want 3Ded!!! How bout this ..... "SNES 3D CLASSICS!!!!?????
Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles (with Lock-on technology), Streets Of Rage 3, Columns and Comix Zone. Pretty please?
Sonic 2 for me! Here's to hoping we get a 3 and Knuckles somewhere down the line too! (BUT I WANT SONIC AND KNUCKLES TO ALLOW LOCK ON FEATURES SO I CAN THEN LOCK IN THIS SONIC 2!!)
Thunder Force IV, Enduro Racer and Quack Shot now please 😃
Now THIS is the sega I know & love!! But for the millionth time vc classics on WII U PLEASE????? I will ask every time till it happens!! Hopefully someone from Sega will one day help make it happen!!
@fluggy If NOJ actually listened to what it's fan's from NA/EU wanted, then maybe it would happen.Im glad sega took the reigns with the 3d classics.
I haven't even tried the first 3D Classics range of games Sega released yet! I have heard very good things about the 3D remakes though, so I should probably get right on that pretty soon!
@Dpishere Local co-op is where it's at!
reads headline
HYES!!!!! All I need is Sonic 3 & Knuckles now for my dream 3D Classics to all be complete.
Alright, Sonic 2 3D is being made! Hopefully they include Knuckles in this version...actually, I REALLY hope they do. The other 2 sound really good too, might have to check them out.
Cool, but I will probably end up passing on them. I already have them on Wii VC, and some on the 360. I still need to get Out Run on 3DS though.
For a while, I thought Sega might not continue with this series. After all, it's been awhile since they released a new one in Japan.
I buy everyone of them, even the lemon (Altered Beast), because the good ones are so good (Outrun, Galaxy force II, etc). I hope Sega makes much money from these, so that they will continue to release more classics and Nintendo, Konami, and Capcom will follow suit.
Woo! Sonic!
Now get Dreamcast Classics on and bring me Jet Set Radio (Future) on 3DS
Fantastic
There IS a hedgehog god in SEGA heaven who answers gamer prayers (at least for these classics). FINALLY! I wonder if Sonic 2 will release on my birthday...hmmm
How did they figure out my top three favorite Sega Genesis games?!
Seriously! The only thing is Sonic 2 and TMNT Hyperstone Heist are always vying for my 3rd favorite.
Man, I love the M2 releases.
The only one I felt letdown with was Altered Beast, primarily because they chose the home port over the arcade.
Still, SOR2 and Sonic2 are wonderful titles and I look forward to trying out Gunstar. I've heard good things! Hoping Golden Axe gets this treatment eventually. Thank you, Sega and M2!
Yes I will get all of them especially Gunstar Heroes.
Pretty much the top 3 games on the system. Good job Sega. Now maybe Phantasy Star 4?
I will buy all 3 without a second thought, 3 of my top 16bit games of all time.
Damm thats 3 of the VERY best Megadrive games you can possibly get what a great selection from Sega to choose for their quality 3D updates, i mean Sonic 2 is way better than Sonic 1, Streets of Rage 2 is way better than Streets of Rage 1, and i dont even need to talk about Gunstar Heroes, WOW.
if you need me i'm lying on the floor in a puddle of my own drool...
Maybe i'll skip thunderblade and wait for june... june can't come soon enough...
I never played gunstar heroes on the megadrive/genesis but I do own the GBA gunstar game and that game is a sure blast to play and also deserves a bit of attention.
@Jock_Nerd You couldn't in the first one, I imagine you still won't be able to sadly.
Turns out we ARE getting Gunstar Heroes. I honestly didn't think we'd get anything but first party SEGA in-house developed titles
Well colour me impressed SEGA
This is going to make a lot of people happy and I think Damien will be one of them
Gunstar Heros will be my first Sega 3D Classic. But, it makes me wonder what Treasure has been up to lately. Sin and Punishment 2 came out a long time ago.
Off-topic: I would love Treasure to revive Alien Soldier and make it 3D gameplay and similar concept to Monster Hunter. I'm imaging hunting a giant cyborg on a derelict space station playing as a humanoid chicken with a laser gun.
@davidevoid OK, thanks.
HRNNNGH. Gunstar Heroes gets a 3d Remake but I wanna play it on the Wii VC with the 2-players. 3ds version may have the 2 player support but I'm not sure it would be the same..
Will they have button remapping and save states?
all instant buys, along with thunderblade
Definitely made my day.
I also like how Axel is just standing there while Blaze is getting smacked. He's like "Next time I say go make me a sandwich, maybe you'll go make me a sandwich!".
Yeah I'm a bad person.
I'm rather excited to see how Streets of Rage 2 and Gunstar Heroes turn out.
@unrandomsam Yes, Vectorman!
